Health & Physical Fitness/Training Thread

I've never had great weight loss results from running, in fact the I think long walking has been more productive strangely.

Maybe it's just me. My back and knees always give me a "hell nah" but I can drop 5lbs a week just going for a 2.5-3 miler 3 days a week.

Granted that's with dieting as well.

Quite simply, a grown man burns 150 calories per mile, be it walking or running. Thus, the faster you run, the faster you burn. However, you can walk three miles and burn just as much as running it.

But if you run there is added benefit. However fast you run, after a half an hour whatever you burn is fat. Therefore if you run four ten minute miles you will burn 600 calories, and 150 of those will be pure fat burn.

So if you want cardio, run fast. If you want enduracne/fat burn, run slow. Ideally, you should do both. I try and run sprints once a week, run easy once a week, and run long once a week. Gives ya a good mix.

Also, and this is the real trick, running makes you hungry. It makes you so hungry you will eat back those calories you just burned if you're not paying attention. To counter this I drink a recovery drink after my longer runs. Something with a lot of protien. Curbs the appetite and replaces the fat with muscle.

At least in theory. :)

In any case, if your joints and back can take it I highly recommend running. Best way I've found to consistently stay in shape.

Traveling this week so got up and hit the fitness center in my hotel this morning. 2 miles on the treadmill, mixing up walking and running because I can't run 2 miles to save my life. Then a bunch of core work.

Now as long as I can avoid the bar tonight...

I went for my 4th 2.5 mile run of my 'return to running' tonight. Pretty rough so far. My advice - don't take 15 years off from your running routine. I'm pretty short and stocky. Although I carry it well (I'm 5'9" but have broad shoulders and a lot of muscle mass), I'm just under 200 lbs. Once it warms up, I will be a biking fiend and I can drop 20 lbs pretty easily.Until then, carrying around all that weight makes running a bitch. It's getting a bit better - rather than stopping 5 or 6 times the first day, I'm only stopping once and walking 50-100 yards to get my heartrate down. Stopping during a run goes against my entire nature, but I really have no choice, so I'm just sucking it up in the pride department. I'm also pretty sure I've developed asthma over the years (or maybe have always had a mild form of it and it's just gotten worse over the years). I'm a wheezy mofo at night.

On the positive front, I have not dropped dead or had an MI yet :) The other positive, my joints feel pretty good.

I'm running every other night and doing Bowflex with my son in between. Haven't dropped a lb yet, although I'm not eating much. I think that's likely because I'm adding some muscle. Hopefully, as I transition out of the 'holy hell I think I am going to die' phase of beginning to run again, I will be able to go further and start trimming down. Until then, I'm gonna grind it till I find it. On a side note, timed myself on the run the other night. I am literally running more than twice as slow the pace I could run in my teens and 20's (when I ran 55 minutes in the Cherry Blossom 10 miler, and sub 3 hour marathons). Time and gravity are heartless wenches! Despite everything though, I'm still smolderingly hot.

I've found that the best way for me to drop fat is HIIT training, particularly with cardio. I can't stand doing cardio for more than 30 minutes. With HIIT cardio I put in about 20 minutes of really high intensity interval cardio training 3-5 days a week, my fat drastically drops and my cardio endurance increases pretty substantially.

That said, nutrition plays an incredibly important role in burning fat & building muscle. There's a fitness industry "pyramid" that fits what I've found to be true. At the tip top of the pyramid is cardio, middle is resistance training, and the base of the pyramid is nutrition. Most people in America have pyramid that bassackwards.

Heh. I think about this a lot. (not your hotness. Ok I think about that a lot too but that's not what I'm talking about here ... wait ... what?)

Er ... ANYway, with my impending 2nd degree black belt test looming in March, and my desperate, oftentimes feeble attempts to get my cardio up to an acceptable level, a level that I took for granted when I tested for my first degree black belt 27 years ago, I've had ample opportunity to reflect on my aging self and how it effects my outlook and my attitude. Oddly, these days I just take it as another challenge.

So I present one of my favorite commercials of all time. I thought it was clever when I first saw it as a younger man years ago. These days, however, it truly speaks to me. I watch it probably once a day now. I find it a good reminder of why we Old Guys keep raging against the ravages of time.

Oh, and I would love to get the chance to spar my 23 year-old self. I'd knock the crap out of that young punk. :)

"You should've dunked it."

Goddam right.

Right there with you, this is a fantastic commercial. I've always been a Jordan fan, and this commercial was just brilliant!

Jordan's force field of awesome simply repels lesser talent.

It. Was. A. Push. Off.

Besides which, what no one talks about is that Hornacek hit a deep three at the end of the half that should have counted but the refs blew it, and had no instant replay.

Jazz shoulda won that game. Just sayin'.

So's YOUR face.

Sorry to distract from the thread, back to our focus of how hot Boone is.

You guys suck. :)

days are getting longer. weather will start warming up in between the cold spells.

went for my first run after work in a while.

whew boy... going to take a few weeks to get back in decent enough shape where i can run an actual distance again :(

What is this... "cardio" ...you speak of?

Word to the wise, never lift heavy before a CrossFit class. I did it Tuesday and about died!

At Tuesday's CrossFit class our instructor divided us into 2 teams then put up an AMRAP (As Man Repetitions As Possible) workout: 10 Thrusters (squat w/bar then shoulder press as you come up), 5 pull-ups, 5 push-ups and 10 sit-ups. We counted the number of times we could complete that circuit in 16 minutes. Holy crap, pretty sure my heart rate was ~190 the whole time  Of course the 2 teams tied at the end and the tie-breaker was a pull-up contest. Of course, my frickin team picked me for the pull-up contest against a DUDE. Totally not fair, even with me being assisted by a band. Bottom line, got my ass kicked and lost it for our team, lol. Totally embarrassing!

Wow that's some serious weight loss. Very impessive! Just be careful.

Does anyone have any good information about what a person's ideal weight should be? I keep seeing I should be anwhere from 175-215 which isn't at all helpful.

Along the lines of what Mike said- you'll know when you're at your right weight.

BMI's are crazy if you carry any muscle.

So, in order to get my second degree black belt I have to pass the test.

In order to be allowed to take the test I have to pass a pre-test to make sure I'm prepared and physically fit enough to handle it and not embarrass the school.

In order to be allowed to take the pre-test, which is this Saturday, I have to be invited by my head instructor.

Invitations come out this week. If I don't get one it's three more months before I get another shot.

It's gonna be a long week.

I'm gonna take a wild guess that you're a shoe-in for an invitation. In my experience only the prepared sweat the process.
