Had a great night! My whole family advanced a rank in kung fu together. This is no small feat, it is not unusual for each rank to take up to 18 months to earn in our style.

Feeling so proud of my daughters especially because it was a very rough one for them to get past both physically and psychologically.

This makes me smile :)

I love hearing about a family participating in a sport together. I never did kung fu with the fam, but we did play lots of sports together and those are some of my best childhood memories. I guarantee your daughters are going to cherish this time in their lives when they grow up :)

I am now officially down 60 lbs from February. Looking good, but I still have a gut, so I'm gonna keep going. I figure another 10-15 ought to do it.

On a side note, anyone know anything about heart rates, and what I should be targeting for my cardiac sessions?

That's truly awesome - congrats! How'd you do it?

Thank you sir. Lanky turned me on to Weight Watchers for the eating side of things, and then I hit the Y 4-5 mornings a week, and occasionally on the weekends too. It's been fun and rewarding. Still frustrating because I have a beer gut, but now I don't look preggers, so that's a huge improvement. :)

that's awesome. congrats!

as for your heart rate, it varies base don age (probably weight too) and what it is you're going for.

read this: Target Heart Rates

That's helpful T, thank you. I am 36, and am hitting 125-135 most days on the ARC trainer, so it looks like I'm about where I need to be.

Used a couple gift cards to buy a couple pair of running shoes and some cold weather gear. Just went for my first run in about 10 years. I'm a big cyclist, but gave up running after I had an autoimmune reaction that wiped out the myelin sheath on the nerves innervating my right arm - and it also knocked out nerves going to my diaphragm and accessory breathing muscles. That was in 1993. Prior to that I ran marathons and was a solid runner. I never could run like that although I recovered mostly from the nerve thing. I just couldn't get my breathing back. Cycling, being less aerobic, doesn't bother me.

I'm kind of determined to take one last crack at running. Went out today and just did a very very slow 2.5 miles, with a couple walking stretches in there to get my HR down. Painful and humbling. But I'm just going to stay at it and see if I can get it back. Dropping 25 lbs would be a great start too.

Am I the only one who went aspeshit eating over the holidays? Wow do I have my work cut out for me now.

At least you guys have been working out. I fed my lazy-ass-itis for 3 weeks and probably gained 10lbs back, minimum.

I gained six pounds since the beginning of November. Dont know why but the holidays this year were particularly tough.

Oh well. Back on the wagon today with a three mile run.

Goaldy stole all my mojo when I gave him the WW recommendation! LOL. I'm up in weight, but still down 25lbs since I started. Getting back on the wagon now!

Boone, I know you know that your first outing back is far more impressive than mine was. :) You'll be fine.

I don't know Henry - it was pretty ugly. Going to hit it again this evening. Hopefully it gets easier as I put the time in...

I got on the treadmill and gave it 25 minutes on Saturday. Going to do it again today. I hate walking/running for exercise but I am such a mess right now that I have seriously reduce my expectations and start slower than I like. I want get back to doing P90X but the stamina just isn't there and won't be for some time. Thinking about the new P90X3 programs because it only takes 30 minutes a day. Also doing yoga in bits and pieces to work on that stamina and my core.

Getting old isn't for sissys.

I actually despise running, though probably the quickest way to lose lbs unfortunately.

I've never had great weight loss results from running, in fact the I think long walking has been more productive strangely.

I had a personal trainer tell me you had to get into the aerobic heart rate zone for over 30 minutes to see the real fat-burning benefit; he said running 40-45 minutes is key. But, it doesn't have to be running, just anything that gets your heart rate up. I say FUNK DAT, who wants to run for 45 minutes? I sure as hell don't, and my knee would hate me for it. :)

Don't get me wrong though, I get good cardio benefit from jogging and sprints, just not weight loss. It also does help me fight better.
