Do we know how serious the Gibson injury is? Is it something that could keep him out of the game? Or is it just sore and he needed a day off.

I still cannot fathom how we allowed ourselves to get trucked by the Giants on our home field coming off a bye week. So I’m sure as hell not holding my breath that they’ll prevail over Detroit.

Me, either. I also hate that things like "we are still in the hunt for the division" when we know if we play anyone outside of the div we get our butts handed to us!

I’m just so sick of the Giants having our number. I guess on the plus side, this is exactly the type of game we come out and inexplicably win... lol

That was a tough loss today, but it's hard for me to be too mad about it. We got some serious breaks on the final drive or wouldn't have been in a position to tie it up to begin with. Stupid plays by Sprinkle and Young doomed us. I still think we got jobbed on the McLaurin fumble as he had it firmly in his hands with a knee down and they still refused to overturn it. We just made too many mistakes and had too many near misses (the missed throw by Smith late, the dropped pass by Sims, too many others to count).

The biggest positive to come out of today (other than helping us in terms of draft position) is that Alex Smith can still play at a pretty high level. We really miss his mobility though. He threw a lot of passes away today, which in and of itself isn't a bad thing as someone in chat pointed out. It's what vets do when the play is not there. But the other thing Smith used to be capable of doing is using his legs to beat you when the pass wasn't there - and that part of his game is probably gone forever. Without his elusiveness and ability to escape the pocket, he is much less effective overall. Still, he showed he can move the ball effectively even with shaky protection - pretty impressive given this was his first start in more than 2 years.

Biggest disappointment.... the DL barely mussed Stafford's hair today. That's a shame because Stafford is a different QB if you muddy his jersey a little bit. Sweat, Young, Kerrigan, .... I barely heard their names today. There's too much talent on that line for them to be neutralized. And the other question I'd have for JLC is 'how many times are you going to put these DBs in zone on key downs before you realize that they cannot cover effectively?' I'm kind of tired of seeing us give up easy touchdowns because we are in zone and guys apparently don't know who is covering what. Put them in man coverage and take your chances. At least then, we know who blew the coverage or got beat for God's sake.

Bad teams find ways to lose games. I know that's an old cliche but it's true and it's what this team does.

I just wonder when Rivera is going to drop the whole division race crap....because what's left of the fanbase doesn't buy it,no one in the media buys it and I'd say most players on the team don't buy it.

Also...for all the blathering that Rivera does about holding players accountable....when does Dustin Hopkins face the music?

What was the official explanation on that play? I only saw what they showed on the Red Zone channel, which showed his knee bouncing off the ground, then his body goes on top of the other players, and the ball comes out. At least from what I saw, they ignored what happened prior to him losing the football and just saw him on top of players and the ball coming loose. It didn't make sense, so I wasn't sure if they gave any more detailed explanation on the broadcast.

And the other question I'd have for JLC is 'how many times are you going to put these DBs in zone on key downs before you realize that they cannot cover effectively?' This is a problem I've seen with this team for a long time. This is where teaching comes into play. What are they teaching these defenders about playing zone? Non one ever seems to be in the right spot on key downs. They all seem to be jumping the wrong routes, leaving their zone, and overall just blowing coverages. Being the defensive coordinator doesn't just mean drawing up a game plan and calling plays. It's also teaching your players how to play. You can't make someone faster or stronger, but you can teach them how to use what they have. I haven't seen a coach that was good at teaching in a long time. I was hopeful for Del Rio and maybe he eventually. But I don't see it right now.

Rivera is not teaching discipline. Or at least it is not translating to the field with the players. Fumbles, stupid penalties that cost us the game, and just really stupid moves all around. Those are all things that you blame a coach for.

If we do not bring a kicker in to compete for the job this week you will be able to tell he doesn't care. If Hopkins doesn't miss that kick the game is tied....possibly won by us.

Hopkins was hurt this week... in fact it was a game time decision as to whether he'd play at all. I don't think they'll do anything based on that right now. He's had a bad season, and I think they should have brought in a legitimate competitor a couple games back. As some have said, he's in his head on some of the kicks, although I will give him credit for the clutch kick to tie it up that most didn't think he'd make, so maybe that can help him come out of his funk. He doesn't have a history of missing gimme kicks but this year he's been bad. He deserves the criticism, but he's been a pretty solid kicker for us for awhile... you hate to cut him during a bad stretch, especially in a season where we aren't going anywhere. Almost all kickers go through a bad stretch occasionally. It's maddening but I think not making a reactionary move is probably the smart approach. If he continues to struggle, you can bring a new kicker in in the offseason.

Ultimately, coaches are responsible for everything that happens on the field... but both Rivera and JDR have successful track records, and they haven't been here long. Maybe what they are 'trying to do' and what they are teaching pays off long-term even if the players we have at some positions aren't able to execute it (yet). I don't know. It is frustrating to see them give up easy TDs in the same zone coverage over and over as if no one is sure who is covering what.

Kel - on the McLaurin fumble, the announcers were going on and on (as was Mike Pereira) that the 'ball was coming out' as his knee hit the ground. That's not what I saw. When they showed the still with his knee on the deck, the ball was still firmly in his grasp. I really don't see how they didn't overturn that one, unless maybe they felt his knee never fully came down - I don't know. I thought that was a real head-scratcher.

the kicker should rarely be the reason you lose a game. all of these players out there for 60 minutes getting the ball as close as they can, the kicker should be able to get the ball through the uprights a lot better than that. he has 5 misses so far this year.

he missed a FG 10/18 and we lost by 1
he missed yesterday and we lost by 3

We should bring someone in and at least put pressure on him to get his act together. he is 12 for 17 for the year...that is not good.

Yeah i've lost my love for Hopkins too.. at a minimum, if he's not healthy enough to make the kicks he should be shelved until he's 100%.

Praiter kicks it 59 yards and I was confident he was going to make it.

outside of 40 and I can't watch Hopkins line up. Just no faith in the guy to do it.

Kai Forbath is still kicking, Graham Gano is still kicking.

About damn time. Hopkins had no challenge even in TC and has been pretty lousy even before his injury.
