Game Notes: Washington Redskins vs. Carolina Panthers

• The Washington Redskins fell to the Carolina Panthers, 21-13, in front of an announced crowd of 79,767 at FedExField on Sunday.
• The Redskins extended their consecutive home sellout streak to an NFL-high 372, including postseason games. The team has sold out all 154 preseason, regular season and postseason games at FedExField.
• Quarterback Robert Griffin III completed 23-of-39 passes for 215 yards. With 23 completions, he tied Norm Snead’s team record for completions in a rookie season (172, set in 1961). Snead was selected with the No. 2 overall pick in the 1961 NFL Draft, 51 years before the Redskins selected Griffin III with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft.
• Griffin III’s 39 pass attempts were a career high.
• Griffin III also rushed 13 times for 76 yards, giving him 529 rushing yards for the season. Griffin III and rookie running back Alfred Morris became the first rookie quarterback-running back tandem in NFL history to each amass 500 rushing yards in a season.
• Morris rushed for 76 yards on 13 carries. It was his seventh 75-yard rushing game of the season, which was tied with Minnesota’s Adrian Peterson and Seattle’s Marshawn Lynch for the most in the NFL as of the conclusion of Sunday’s 1 p.m. games.
• Morris now has 793 rushing yards, the most by an NFL rookie running back through nine games since Peterson rushed for 1,081 yards through nine games as a rookie with Minnesota in 2007.
• The Redskins rushed for 151 yards, marking the eighth game this season in which the team has rushed for 100 or more yards, the most in the league. It also marked the eighth time this season the Redskins have rushed for 125 yards or more, also a league high.
• The Redskins scored three points on their first offensive possession on a 47-yard field goal by kicker Kai Forbath. It marked the third time this season the Redskins have scored on their first possession, with all three resulting in field goals.
• Forbath has converted a kick from 45 yards or longer in each of his first four NFL games.
• Forbath finished 2-of-2 on field goal attempts, making him 8-for-8 for his career.
• Morris had three runs of 10 yards or more. Entering Week 9, his 23 rushes of 10+ yards were second-most in the NFL. He had already surpassed Roy Helu Jr.’s team-high 20 from a season ago.
• In the second quarter, Griffin III found wide receiver Joshua Morgan for six yards on fourth-and-three. Later in the drive, the Redskins converted fourth-and-one with a three-yard run by fullback Darrel Young. The Redskins were 3-of-5 on fourth down for the game and are now 11-of-14 on fourth downs this season. The 11 fourth down conversions are the team’s most since 2002, when they had 13 fourth down conversions.
• Morgan finished the game with a team-high six receptions for 46 yards. His six receptions set a season-high.
• Running back Evan Royster caught a career-long 18-yard reception in the fourth quarter. Later in the quarter, he scored the first touchdown of his career on a two-yard touchdown run.
• Royster set a season high for receiving yards (30) and tied his season high in receptions (three).
• Tight end Logan Paulsen registered a team-high 59 receiving yards on a career-high five receptions.
• Wide receiver Dezmon Briscoe registered his first career rushing attempt, gaining one yard.
• Linebacker London Fletcher appeared in his 233rd consecutive game, the longest active streak in the NFL.
• Long snapper Justin Snow appeared in his 200th career regular season game.
• The game was the first in NFL history contested between a Heisman-winning rookie quarterback (Griffin III) and a Heisman-winning quarterback in his second NFL season (Carolina quarterback Cam Newton).
• The game was the Redskins’ annual Homecoming Game. The more than 150 former players, coaches and staff in attendance represented a combined 1,024 seasons with the team, 80 Super Bowls, 43 members of the 80 Greatest Redskins, 21 members of the Redskins Ring of Fame and nine Pro Football Hall of Famers.

Not to be super negative, but I always wonder what negatives streaks, etc. we've established in each of these games...

Almost makes me want to establish a Bizzaro-version of the Redskins PR office if only I had my own Stats Inc.-like staff to compile the extent of our weekly mediocrity as opposed to highlight some (almost) meaningless things like the fact that RGIII had a season high for passing attempts.

For example, announcing that you've sold out all 154 games at FedEx while your attendance is about 14% short of capacity (and generally is) strikes me as slightly disingenuous as something to be proud of/highlight.

Some of these are definitely lemonade out of lemons:

Redskins F.O.:

Translation:
"We haven't scored on most our opening drives and when we have it's been an anti-climactic field goal. In short, we've scored 9 points out of a possible 63."

Redskins F.O.:
"Morgan finished the game with a team-high six receptions for 46 yards. His six receptions set a season-high."

Translation:
"Morgan is earning 78K per reception."

Redskins F.O.:
"Wide receiver Dezmon Briscoe registered his first career rushing attempt, gaining one yard."

Translation:
"What do you want from us? We lost to a team that's 1-6. Our coach has given up on this season. We're down to highlighting the fact that a WR gained one positive yard. It's that kind of year."

Goal -- thanks for the positive feedback. I don't think a blog feature is in order as taking that on would be tantamount to acquiescing to an even darker premise: the Redskins will be sufficiently crap that I'd have material to mock for the rest of the season!

However, I won't miss the opportunity for lampooning when it (all too frequently) comes.

The Redskins defense didn't improve this week, they only faced a less talented offense than in previous weeks.

The signature play again was the fourth quarter deep pass that Newton converted with no Redskin in the picture.

The ending was a lot like the NY game.
