NO TAN IS A SAFE TAN......

For all of my life up until about 2 months ago, I didn't pay much attention to sayings like that.... didn't.

I'd guess most folks know somebody that's had skin cancer, and more often then not, a little snip here, or a little slice there, and everything is hunky dorey. Of course, the other side of the coin can be ugly.

One person dies every 57 minutes from melanoma....

  • An estimated 76,690 new cases of invasive melanoma will be diagnosed in the US in 2013.
  • An estimated 9,480 people will die of melanoma in 2013.
  • Melanoma is the most common form of cancer for young adults 25-29 years old and the second most common form of cancer for young people 15-29 years old.

I've made a change in my life style. My sun exposure is pretty limited... yard work, normal outside home maintenance, and motorcycle riding. While not a drastic change, I don't leave the house without sun screen while the sun is up. Any extended outdoor activities, you'll find me in a long sleeve UV / SPF rated shirt, and either a floppy UV / SPF rated hat, or UV / SPF skull cap under a cap, with heavy duty sun screen on any exposed skin.

I don't generally preach, so I'll finish by saying, sunburn can be avoided, and that golden tan just aint worth the risk.

Enjoy the holiday weekend.
