Free Agency:

We had old man Moss, Geezer Gaffney & Senile Stallworth last season. Could it be because of THEM we signed some young receivers, and not because of the suckitude of our draft picks?

I'll say it here and now - if Robinson or Paul are NOT significant contributors this season, I'll proclaim Ryman and BT the kings of all things Redskins knowledge in my Sig all next offseason.

Uh oh! I guess we need to define significant contributor.

Actually, I am not sure why you guys are down on Gaffney, he had a very solid season last year. I would be happy to see him as the #2 receiver this year if Morgan cannot step up, and assuming Garçon is the #1.

I think you're stretching with Robinson and I have to wonder why Paul seemed to plateau last season going stretches without a catch. I think you've dug yourself a little whole Lanky. If you had proclaimed Hank and Paul would be significant contributors, then I would have probably agreed, but unless Banks is cut and Robinson takes Return duties, this is a bold proclamation.

I like being bold. :) Robinson was brought up from the PS last season - ask yourself why? And Hank is a given, I've been proclaiming him as the next great Redskin WR since we drafted him. Paul drew raves from the staff last year as well, I think he'll step up this year.

Gaffney was good, but also old. The FO wants young WRs that will be around with our young QB for years. Gaffney is not that.

As far as #1, #2, #3 WRs, the paradigm is shifting. No longer need a clear #1.

I agree with that, going into next year I think you're right about the shift. I think part of the reason some seem to minimize Gaffney's performance last year is because he wasn't a "true" #1.

You just surprised me with you're proclamation about Robinson. Unless he is on special teams returning kicks, I don't see him as a significant contributor. It would be nice to see him fill the role in the slot, he might be able to play that role, but Moss is better even at his advanced age. Moss will play his last season with us as a slot receiver and Gaffney will get playing time as well unless we can work out a trade for either of them. It really looks like we will be keeping at least 7 receivers again this year.

Edit: As for Robinson, he has potential. You're right he was bought up last year, but I think it had more to do with injuries at WR and the threat of losing a raw player. Paul? He disappeared down the stretch last season when Stallworth was brought back after Hank's injury. I think that is why we brought in 2 new WR's.

I would say the future of our WR corps as our coaches see it are Hank and Garcon at #1 and #2, with Morgan and one of the other young guys at #3 and #4. For now we're keeping Gaffney and Moss around to help transition to this, or in case some of the young guys don't pan out as planned.

I seriously doubt our front office has decided for sure that all of our second year guys are already big failures. :)

I don't think any of them were/are failures.

I bet Moss will fade away this year and lose his snaps to Paul or Robinson, same as Gaffney. Moss was almost out the door until Royal chose the Chargers over us.

Or, Moss and Gaffney could both have 1000 yard seasons this year, and Paul and Robinson cut mid season. Who knows? But I have an active rooting interest to see them succeed. :)

How many Pro Bowl receivers have there been that their QB was not at least hinting at being a Pro Bowler?

Step one to bring a WR to the next level, get him a QB who can get him the ball not only in the right spot to make a play but also in time to make a great play.

Garcon had good numbers last year working without a legit NFL quarterback.

Steve Smith over the years has put up excellent numbers with average quarterbacks.

The bottom line is the Redskins until these recent moves simply didn't have enough talent at the WR position.

Plain and simple.

Henry, this front office has made some pretty solid moves, however they also had to deal with Shanny making some EPIC failures, the trade for Mcrapp, Brown and my personal favourite and the hugest failure, the switch on defence. Depending on Kemo, cutting Bryant when he went on to start and play in a rotation in green bay wasnt exactly great either.

However some good moves they made? Getting carriker for next to nothing, granted he was a bust for the Rams but hes been a solid starter for us. getting Bowen, was also solid. our second draft was impressive insofar as the wheeling and dealing and getting Kerrigan is what really made the difference on this defence, even though he was the main reason we switched to a 34, Rak really doesnt fit it at all. He is an amazing athlete who manages to play solidly because of it though. The Second Draft was solid, because we found contributors, if Jenkins played as well as he was showing and didnt get injured I would feel a bit better about it even though to me Jenkins was a WTF pick.

Garçon developed with Manning throwing him the ball though. Those 2 years were HUGE for him.

LOL. So now its our WR's fault. Honestly, I don't know how anyone can say this with a straight face after seeing the play behind center for the Redskins the past 10 years.

Ryman,

I don't remember us cutting anyone that went on to start at NT for anyone else and I am pretty sure that would have been front page news here. I am nearly certain it was Green Bay because Raji was drafted in 2009 and has started at least the last 2 years, if not all 3.

I made a thread about it at the time, he started 2 games and played in a rotation at the end if the season and in the playoffs.

Dissected the comment on Garcon, but left the one about Steve Smith alone :)

Look, if Shanahan and Son believed ANY of the younger receivers on this team over the past two seasons were ready to accept more responsibility in the passing game they would have been on the field.

Do you think Shanahan would have continued to tread water and resign Stallworth in mid-season if he saw enough to show that others were ready to step up and take on an expanded role?

This is the same argument that came up with the 2008 draft picks. Some felt that Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly would be much better NFL players and develop faster if Jason Campbell was further along in his own development as a qb.

In the end Thomas has shown over the past 3-4 years that his role in the NFL is largely going to be on special teams, much as Desmond Howard's ended up being.

And Kelly was compromised by the cumulative injuries to his knees.

The fact Zorn didn't put these guys on the field right away, espeically Thomas, reflected what they were NOT DOING in practice.

Zorn may not have been a good head coach but as a former qb could see when a receiver didn't exhibit basic skills necessary to step on the field in the NFL.

Howard green was his name, im trying to find which games he started and which games he played a significant number of snaps in.

Here he is.

We signed him in April 2010 and cut him in Sept. He was signed by the Jets after Kris Jenkins was hurt then cut two games later. After that he was picked up by the Packers when the injuries started mounting. He started 3 games for them in 2010 and 5 games last year.

I'll give you that the Packers were a better defense than Washington in 2010 but not in 2011 and even with as bad as they were hurting last year he couldn't start for them. He might have been better than Kemo but my guess is we cut him because we were planning on Haynesworth playing the nose and had Al ever pulled his head out of his ass this guy wasn't an upgrade. That is just a guess though.

Steve Smith didn't break 1000 yards until his third season. In a stunning coincidence, that happened to be the first season Jake Delhomme became the starting QB.

Smith put up good numbers for the next five seasons he was healthy. In '05, 06, and 08 he went to the pro-bowl. His numbers, though not terrible, did dip in 2007, which in a stunning coincidence happened to be the season Delhomme missed 13 games to injury.

In 2009, 34-year-old Delhomme's play started to deteriorate and he was replaced by Matt Moore towards the end of the season. In a stunning coincidence, Smith's numbers dropped off dramatically, and he failed to break 1000 yards for the first time in four years.

In 2010, Delhomme was gone and Jimmy Clauson and Moore fought for who could suck the most at QB. In a stunning coincidence, Smith's numbers dropped to career lows as a full time starter, with just 554 receiving yards and 12 yards a catch.

In 2011, Cam Newton was drafted and broke all kinds of rookie QB records. In a stunning coincidence, Smith had almost 1400 receiving yards at 17.6 yards a catch and made the pro-bowl for the first time since 2008.

Go figure.
