For those that want the staff back, does Shanahan need an extension?

Option 1: Give Mike a 2 year extension and fire Kyle and Haslett. Don't let Mike bring in replacements, let Bruce Allen force them on him. Do what it takes to bring in Art Briles as OC, and Wade Phillips as DC, and with the extra cap room let them all work their magic and make us contenders again.

Option 2: Fire Mike, promote Kyle to HC, and let him assemble a staff.

Option 3: Keep everything exactly like it is, and break records for defensive failure next year, and records for passing on 3rd and short and passes in goal line situations.

Option 4: Fire everybody and see how the chips fall.

As crazy as it sounds to some, the only one I don't have patience for is option 4.

I don't know how you think you could fire Mike or Kyle and keep the other.

I feel like that's a package deal. You think Kyle would resume his dad's job after he was fired early? Or that Mike would stay if they fired Kyle?

Zero chance.

I think there is an outside chance that Mike would step down in favor of Kyle, or that he could be convinced to do so. I don't think Kyle would stick around if they outright fired Mike, though.

Yeah, my understanding is that Shanny has full control over everything.

Gotta let it run it's course. Can't let Shanny walk away with ANY excuses. If he continues to fail, then it's all on him.

I do believe an extension sends a message to players. So, you do it. I'm sure the extension can be written in a way that's good for Snyder if he fires him after next season.

Extensions mean nothing...all it means is that Mike gets some more guaranteed money. Extend him, avoid any hint that year 5 is his last chance to have a contender not a pretender in this team...a lame duck if you will. If we do not win the division soundly next year, he's gone...extension or not.

Shanahan needs to let Haslett go and junk trying to create a Steelers style 3-4 because over 4 years it hasn't worked.

So, it's tricky because Shanny would probably quit if anyone recommended he change his staff to come back.

But that's what needs to happen.

The team keeps coming up with offensive performers - Morris as the surprise in 2012 and Reed in 2013.

But on defense guys seem to get sucked into a vortex where they disappear.

There’s what I think will happen and what I want to see happen.

What I think will happen is Mike will get a 2-3 year extension. Kyle will stay right where he is for now. Defense is a little trickier. I can’t read the tea leaves there yet. I think Dan may insist on making some changes if the team isn’t close to .500 and the defense remains one of the worst in recent memory. That type of “interference” might drive Shanny away. If that happens we move to plan B and if I were Bruce Allen I’d have one.

What I’d like to see happen is that we are competitive the rest of the way out, finish close to .500 and Mike gets a 2-3 year extension. Kyle stays where he is for now and Wade Phillips is brought in to run the defense after everyone gets fired in Houston, and I think they will. I don’t know what type of relationship if any Mike and Wade have (you’d have to think they’ve crossed paths at some point) but Wade knows how to run a 3-4 defense if we’re going to stay with it. I wouldn’t be opposed to going back to the 4-3 but Haslett needs to go either way. New special teams coach too please. That’s starting to sound like a broken record.

Too early for too much of this kind of talk though, but yeah, if we’re going to keep Mike we’ll need to extend him. Free agents will look at that as well as potential assistant coaches and this off-season’s free agent period is going to be critical for us. Nobody will want to come if we don’t at least the illusion of stability.

You fire shannahan and you take your lumps, you find a young guy who wants to build HIS legacy and who has roots in the new fashion high temp offence. you build a staff that wants to win, looking for young guys who have upside.

I honestly wonder if some of you guys have been fans for very long. two words NORVAL TURNER. consistency is not that great if its consistently mediocre.

Shanny thought this team was a playoff team in his first year, he made some highly questionable moves, and no he doesnt get a pass for that.
his second year, he didnt do anything special to show hes a talent finder and we didnt do much.
his third year we went on a season ending streak to make the playoffs but in the long run that didnt do anything good for us anyway.

so you move on, I dont think you need to give him any more chances, 4 years is enough , 5 is almost too many, 6 and I gotta ask you if you are retarded.

My biggest disagreement is that this isn't Norv Turner. You cant hold Shanny responsible for what previous mistakes were made. Yeah he's been here for 4 years, but he's also had to fix a completely dysfunctional locker room when he first walked in. That takes time. He got that fixed and he got handcuffed with a cap penalty. 2 years of not having as much money as your competition.... and he sure as heck looks like he's got the team going in the right direction. We have arguably the best locker room we've had in 20 years. Guys consistently took pay cuts to stay here and keep the team under the cap penalty. We have skill positions in place, who arguably could be pro-bowlers. Once we have a full offseason, with a full cap, we can make more moves to sure up the ugly positions. It's hard, in my personal mind, to make any kind of TRUE evaluation of Shanahan, until he's got a level playing field with the competition. He doesn't have that, and wont until this coming offseason.

Oh, and I'd like to remind you that with all that other stuff, he defied odds and won 7 in a row, almost sweeping the NFC East last year, leading to a division title... I don't understand why so many people are so quick to pull the plug on a system that has been better then we've had in a long, LONG time. Sure there are things that need to be addressed but we're a lot better off now then we were 5 years ago. I know that isn't saying much, but it is showing progress which is something this team has been missing greatly.

You also said "you build a staff that wants to win. looking for young guys who have upside" i'm sorry but thanks for telling me the sky is blue. EVERY staff wants this, including the one we have in place now. I hate to break it to you, but this is kind of the foundation of every coaching staff there is on every level of any sport that's ever been professionally played. This is about as general as it gets.
