Fish on! - The Fishing Thread

Wow. Big ol' cat!

That's a big one! What pound line did you use?
I'm not even sure, we were using my buddies gear. It was braided line with a higher pound test for the leader that he had attached.

When I was reeling it in and he saw it before we landed it, he thought it would be at least 40 pounds cause he's caught big boys before. He was pretty surprised when it was only 28.5 pounds though but I didn't care haha, it was awesome!

I got a video that he took too of me reeling it in and bringing it in the boat. I can upload it to youtube if anyone is interested. At one point he has to put the phone down cause he was trying to record and use the net at the same time and realized that wasn't going to work lol.

Yeah it was great, out there for like 5 hours or so.

Fishing in the Potomac when the conditions are right for this, where I go wading and stuff, only happens like for 2 months out of the year, and it's definitely my favorite way to fish freshwater without going out on a boat.
This is how I fish locally as well, my spot is just below Harpers Ferry. I strap a rod to a bike, pack a lunch and have a day. But this summer, with all the rain, made it difficult. Twice I went and it was too fast to fish safely. I started watching the river levels and really didn't get to go out more than 3-4 times all summer. After losing half my summer to prostate cancer treatment last year this was a real bummer.

So it about 2am, no moon, and perfectly flat water on the pine island sound / causeway beach. I was standing in about 4' of water maybe 30' of the shore line. All of a sudden I'm almost thrown off balance from behind by a wave of sorts. I'm not the skittish type, and it didn't instantly click that something large passed behind me. A moment later, about 40' to my right, a "fin" came up out of the water heading towards me... I did my best impression of JC, and did more then walk on the water. Get onto the beach, run to get my spot light from the truck. I'm scanning around where my rod and bait buck still sat out in the water with the light when I see the fin come up from the opposite direction, and goes past the rod... and blows out a big puff of misty breath... Friggin dolphin ( bottle nosed porpoise ) scared the living hell out of me, and haven't waded out into the water at night ever since.

Up to my knees is far enough for me when I'm fishing. I've seen too many sharks at the OBX to venture further out there. That's some scary sh*t you went through, though.

Yeah there is a website I go to that has the potomac river flow quite a bit north of where I go fishing, but I know what numbers I need for it to be good in my spot. I've also gone when it's been way too fast and I just immediately leave basically.

Here are a few pictures from the OBX of our catches over the years. All fish and rays were released to fight another day.

Here is a 40" Red Drum that my better half caught. I use 17lb mono main line with a 40lb shock leader, and then a fish finder rig on the end.

Here is what hurricane Irene did to the OBX back in 2011. This is the same area that's been in the news this year for houses getting washed into the ocean.

My one and only fishing story involved my step-bro that I've asked for your good wishes...

We were at the creek (pronounced "crik" ). He had me all set up, but he was standing in front of me when I cast....right into the back of the hoodie he was wearing! He didn't get hurt and everything was funny, but it's weird what you remember.

We've learned how to read the surf so I pretty much know where the fish like to hang out. We used to fish the high tides but we can catch all tides nowadays.

To find deep water look for crushed shells in the surf. The smoother the sand, the shallower the water is. Walking barefoot across the shells sucks but that's where the deep water is.

We also look for cuts in the sand bars. This is where the surf goes back out. It will look similar to a wash out or rip tide. The big fish hang in these so they can pick off the little fish struggling with the current.

Nothing better than a bitter hoppy beer at 10am with a stogie. Reminds me of tailgating a little.

My other grandson catching his first red drum which was 29 inches long.

I tried to get him to hold it but that wasn't happening, lol.

We're fishing cut bait (mullet) on fish finder rigs with size 7 hooks. 4oz pyramid sinkers were holding bottom too.

The wind was steady at 17mph the last two days at the OBX. Terrible for fishing but great for the kite surfers. This is our view from our house, of the sound side, which was filled with surfer dudes on spring break. They've been jumping today and getting 20+ feet air on each jump.

OBX sunset, enjoy!

We were sand blasted yesterday. Winds held steady at 17mph so the gusts were near 25.

We had one really big strike where the wife couldn't reel it one turn. As soon as I grabbed the rod the fish gave it a big pull and slipped my shock leader knot. This is the second big fish I've lost in two years now where my shock leader knot is slipping. I use the modified albright to attach my 17 lb mono main line to a 25 foot piece of 40 lb mono shock leader.

It seems to hold ok with 30-40 inch fish but is slipping on anything over 5 feet. I guess I'll look at those double knot knots, like a Bimini twist and no-name knot. They take longer to tie but I can't have another slip.

Here's a pic of the sand rolling across the beach.
