Eric Bieniemy- OC

Bienemy could be the next big thing, or there may be a reason why no one to date has given him a chance. I have no idea. I'll trust a new GM to figure it out. I suspect the odds a brand new regime looks at someone Rivera brought in and says 'he's our guy' are pretty damn small though. I'm not even sure he's got that great of a chance to stay on as OC.
 
In any case the team has 3 or 4 offensive linemen to add.

And depth as well. I don't see a single player that has PROVEN that he is a building block for the future.
 
I think if Eric is here next season, it nearly has to be as the head coach. I don't see anyone coming here to be the head coach and saying "yeah, I'll keep that Eric guy and his whole staff. And he can keep on functioning as the defacto head coach while he is at it."

EB isn't going to want to give up the control he has here and take a step back to just an OC either. That sort of thing wouldn't sit well.

Hence the reason I consider the rumors of interest in his being the head coach in Chicago a good thing. No matter how it is handled, if he isn't the head coach somewhere there will be a certain amount of our fanbase angry and they will scream that it was about color - especially if the new coach is not a POC.

Harris doesn't need that controversy, no matter how small, this early in things. What he needs is a fanbase excited about whoever his front office and head coach are.
 
The only report I have seen about Bieniemy and Chicago is this tweet from Josina Anderson.



Her ‘among others’ inclusion strikes me as somewhat important context. Have there been other reports that I’ve missed?
 
Not sure. It could be an interest based on meeting the Rooney Rule or it could be genuine interest.
 
She also states that the Bears ‘are expected’ to have interest. Strikes me as pretty weak info. 🤷🏻‍♂️
 
To be fair though, I guess it’s important to dance around the tampering issue.

Good point. Bears are tampering. We want one of their first rounders as compensation ;)
 
While it's possible she is the only source out in public, I've heard speculation about it based on existing relationships that Bieniemy has with current Bears front office folks from time working together at previous clubs.

Another factor playing into the speculation is the likelihood of the Bears selecting Williams #1 overall and the excellent work Bieniemy is credited for with young QBs like Mahommes and Howell.

Do with all that what you will, of course. It is very much rumor and speculation - just like Belichick to Washington. *rollseyes*
 
I keep going back to something I said on a pod recently.

The most impactful aspect of a total housecleaning is that the new decision-makers will have zero emotional attachment to anyone or anything, no ego invested in previous decisions, and will be able to operate at least for awhile towards one goal - what decisions are most likely to produce a winning organization.

It’s very unlikely, with every available option open to them, that betting on a guy like an unproven Eric Bienemy who has yet to show he can be a top OC is even remotely likely.
 
Bieniemy is not going to become the next head coach of Washington IMO.

I agree that someone spending $6B on a team is not likely to come in and take 1 year of work as an OC for the former regime as the basis for offering the guy the keys to the kingdom.

What the NFL has taught us over the past X number of years with all of the coaching new hires is that there is diffuse talent out there, capable younger talent, guys that use analytics and employ innovative tactics and strategies in developing game plans.

McDaniel, McVay, Taylor, Shanahan, O'Connell, etc.

At 54, I see Bieniemy as being more 'old school' rather than in this latter category.

So, while I think he is capable of running an offense with the right mix of talent, I don't see him as a 'wunderkind' that is 1 in a 100 hire we can't allow to leave the building.

That said, the fact a number of the players already here didn't want to put in the work and time to master the offense and execute their assignments doesn't excuse the reality that they should be shown the door at the end of the season.
 
I think EB has a ton of potential as an OC (as you said, on a team with guys who are interested in putting in the work required to win). But it’s highly unlikely he gets the chance to continue here even as an OC and I think we should all be okay with that.

It was a weird hire timing-wise from the outset.
 
I think it's more of an indictment of the league.

The ONLY opportunity Bieniemy had was to go to a team where the head coach is likely in his last season in charge with a new owner coming in and a lame duck front office that is hard-pressed to make any real changes in personnel in terms of 'adds' to the team for 2023.

After a run of 5 straight playoff appearances, 3 Super Bowl appearances and 2 Championships NO ONE ELSE was willing to bring EB aboard as a HC or OC?

You see incompetent coaches like Staley with the Chargers that has a good amount of talent on the roster and can't ever seem to put it together and win anything.

Other head scratchers include all of the New England Patriots assistants that kept getting jobs like Matt Patricia and Joe Judge just because they were associated with Belichick.

If EB gets cast as being successful ONLY because he was working under HOF offensive coach Andy Reid then how come Matt Patricia, who similarly worked as a DC for perhaps the best DC of the past 30-40 years in Belichick, was given credit for NE's defensive rankings in the mid 2010's?

All Patricia was doing was implementing what Belichick had already put in place years earlier.
 
The news week cycle has started. We did not play and Eric Bienemy’s stock rose. The Bears want him. The Chiefs offense is a mess. The receivers don’t know the rules. Let’s see what happens after we play games.
 
The personnel side let the Chiefs down.

After Smith-Schuster left in free agency the Chiefs didn't make any real moves to add playmakers or reliable veteran receivers on offense.

How did the Chiefs end up with Donovan Smith starting at OT?

He was awful in Tampa and was the most penalized lineman in the NFL in the previous year is now protecting Mahomes?

I do think that the younger receivers on the Chiefs SHOULD have improved over the course of the season and may have done so with a coordinator that held them more accountable.

That could very well have been the EB difference.
