Finally, the reign of terror in DC has come to an end. The Dark Lord, Beelzebub, Mephistopheles, Lord Farquaad, has been vanquished. He leaves a franchise he once claimed his boyhood love in tatters, skulking out of DC in disgrace, allegations of sexual impropriety, organization-wide misogyny and abuse, and possible financial malfeasance still hovering over his petty little head. So damaged is the little man’s reputation, he apparently has elected to flee the country for the relative anonymity of Great Britain, taking his enabling minimizing apologist wife with him.
There was a time in the halcyon early days of Snyder’s term as owner where Washington’s fanbase bought ‘the story’. The myth of that Pat Fisher belt buckle-wearing childhood Dan Snyder fooled a lot of us for a long time. Snyder quickly earned a reputation as a ‘passionate’ owner willing to spend any amount of his self-made personal wealth to bring in exciting free agents. We thought eventually it would all pay off and the Redskins would return to their former glory. Oh how delusionally wrong we were.
It turns out Dan Snyder was just one shitty pathetic excuse of a human being. There’s no need to regurgitate the catalog of petty, greedy, vindictive misdeeds that cemented Snyder’s legacy as a horrible NFL owner. He’s a bad, irredeemable character. You don’t have to enter the home from which the horrific smell of decay and putrescence is emanating to know something dead and rotting is inside. It’s going to take time and a lot of lime to cover up the lingering stench of the Snyder era.
Legions of former die-hard Washington fans have decided over the years that their nostrils could bear the sickening odor no longer. So despicable and abhorrent is the man that countless passionate adoring fans have simply walked away from one of the things they loved most. It takes a special kind of POS human to inspire that kind of sea change from passion to hatred.
Congrats ‘Mr. Snyder’. Short of moving the team elsewhere under the cloak of darkness, you’ve done everything in your power to destroy a hallowed franchise and it’s proud fanbase as thoroughly as any two bit dictator could ever have dreamed of doing. Unfortunately, the NFL doesn’t believe in war crimes tribunals or you might be slithering out of Ashburn under far less ideal circumstances. Instead, I suppose all those billions will take a little sting out of earning the title of worst owner in all of pro sports history. How proud of that legacy you must be.
Where do we go from here? It doesn’t really matter, does it? Snyder’s departure in and of itself constitutes a huge victory of sorts. Of course his departure represents a spiritual cleansing and franchise rebirth for fans. More importantly for countless former employees and staff who have suffered abuse, humiliation, threats, and degradation at the hands of this arrogant petty little man - they are the biggest winners here. Those who persevered, despite pressure, intimidation, and threats to bring to light the institutional wrongdoings of Snyder and many of the equally despicable minions who flourished with his encouragement, should feel most proud and vindicated. Every fan of this team owes those folks a debt of gratitude for having the courage to come forward with the truth of their experiences.
The moment ‘Mr. Snyder’ got on his private jet and made his escape this team’s future prospects became infinitely and immediately brighter. The ‘Commanders’ may not become a perennial NFL powerhouse anytime soon, but suddenly - anything is possible. At the very least the fans of this beleaguered team can began to hold their heads up again, have hope for the future, and will never again have to apologize or feel ashamed of declaring which NFL team they root for.
There is a lot more that will need to happen to have a full catharsis in the post-Dan Snyder era. Several serious investigations are either in progress, or perhaps have had their findings delayed until Snyder’s departure. All of the facts and findings must be publicly revealed with complete and full transparency and the NFL, regardless of the ramifications to Roger Goodell and other NFL owners, should be held to account for their role in what happened in Washington during Snyder’s tenure.
Many have predicted a massive influx of returning Washington fans upon Snyder’s ouster. I’m not sure we’ll see anything like that kind of predicted resurgence. So damaging and reprehensible has Snyder’s impact on this franchise been, I think there is a large portion of our former fanbase which has washed its hands of the NFL for good. I hope I am wrong, because this franchise has a rich and historic tradition deserving of celebration and support. Future glory is out there ready and waiting to be seized. As has always been the case, although sometimes forgotten with all of the negative distractions of the Snyder era, it is about our players and supporting their efforts to bring another Lombardi trophy back to DC.
Two final thoughts before I go off on a celebratory drinking binge. Firstly, this sad story is an important reminder.
Karma is an absolute bitch.
Do bad, selfish, evil things and you can rely on one thing. It’s not going to end well for you.
Finally, I hope everyone out there who, upon hearing the outcry and protestations of former employees, fans, and media members who responded by saying ‘Shut up. Nothing is ever going to change. He’s not selling. You are wasting your time. I just want to root for my team’ has learned something.
When you see wrongdoing, if you are a decent human being, you speak up, you criticize, and you persistently refuse to shut up until your voice is heard. Change is always possible but it doesn’t happen in a vacuum or when confronted by apathy and cynicism. Dan Snyder is no longer the owner of our team because countless people said ‘this is unacceptable’ and refused to ‘move on’. It’s that simple.
Be that kind of person.
And Snyder?
Good riddance.
