I figure the faster I flush my thoughts out on my keyboard, the faster I will be able to move on from Sunday...but it won't be easy. Good thing there is a quick turnaround and we play on Thursday, because this one hurts. Let's get right to our picks for Studs, Duds, and Hat Tips this week.
Studs:
1. Sam Howell - the kid had an amazing turnaround after the debacle of a performance vs. the Bills last week. People questioned if he would be able to respond, if he would be able to pick himself up off the mat, and if he would be able to recover. On Sunday in Philly, Howell checked off all the boxes. He was accurate in the short passing game, had some really nice intermediate downfield passes, showed better awareness in the pocket, and used his scrambling ability and feet really well. He single handedly carried the Commanders on his back for a game-tying touchdown drive in the final minute and a half. Sam was really clutch and gave us a lot to smile about. Hope has been reignited that he can potentially develop into the QB we all so desperately want him to be.
2. Eric Bienemy - much like Howell, EB bounced back really nicely against Philadelphia. In the first half, he did everything you could have asked him to do to help set the team up for success. There was a nice mix of run and pass, and we neutralized the Eagles' defensive front by opting for the short/quick hitting passing game. While the offense and EB's playcalling sputtered in the third quarter, they put together some nice series in the 4th quarter to eventually force OT. Putting up 31 points against the Eagles on the road in most situations should set you up for victory...
Duds:
1. Defensive Line - unfortunately, the supposed strength of this team disappointed for the second straight week. Is it Del Rio who is the blame, or the players themselves? No matter which way you slice it, when you have four first rounders up front who form what is supposedly the identity of this team, you need to be able to ride them in the biggest moments of the game and to me, they fell flat on their faces again.
2. Jamin Davis - he seemed fairly active early on in the contest, but the ugly side of Jamin Davis showed up in OT when he had D'Andre Swift one on one and all squared up to be tackled, but flat out missed. It lead to an Eagles' first down which ultimately would prove to be enough to set up the game winning field goal. You can't have that happen as a former first rounder - you are going to be judged harshly for it.
3. Ron Rivera - just brutal...in my opinion, maybe one of his worst coached games in his tenure as Washington's coach. EB and Howell helped generate 31 points offensively on the road in Philly. Those guys earned the opportunity at the very least to have one more play to end it on a two point conversion. Instead, Rivera opted for OT. I don't get it. A week ago down 10-0 against Buffalo in the first half, he went for it inside the Bills' five yard line on a day when the offense was struggling. Taking the points and being conservative there could have potentially helped settle Howell and the offense down. Today, he bets against them when they had all the momentum in the final minute. Ron cemented for me today that he has lost all his feel for the game as an NFL coach.
4. Emmanuel Forbes - welcome to the NFL, kid. AJ Brown had 9 receptions and 175 yards, largely at the expense of Forbes on many occasions today. We got a clear look at why the likes of BSJ and Kendall Fuller have had the lion's share of the snaps at corner this year. For a first round pick, he certainly doesn't seem ready for the NFL stage quite yet. Almost a quarter into the year, Rivera's 2023 draft has the looks of one that might go down as his worst in Washington. It's early though and I am not trying to overreact...
5. Officiating - Terry McLaurin's foot was in bounds in OT. There was a dark space on my television screen between his toe and the sideline (and I'm not being a homer). I get why they wouldn't overturn it though, especially at that juncture in the game. Officials aren't usually that brave to make the correct call. As well, the Eagles' LG clearly jumped offside in OT on the 4th and 1 tush push, but it was ignored. Unfortunately, bad officiating surfaced at the most important juncture of the game and that's when it hurts most...
6. Tress Way - This may be the first time in three seasons that Tress Way has been placed on the dud list. Unfortunately, he shanked a punt at the worst moment in the ball game - overtime. The way our defense was playing, there was little chance they would recover from that and of course, they didn't.
7. Sam Cosmi - he was praised in the media during the first three weeks for his successful transition to RG. He looked like a shopping cart on Sunday.
8. Jahan Dotson - Despite the TD to force OT, Dotson dropped a super easy ball in the second half that would have extended a drive. Instead, that drop seemed to tilt the game in favour of Philly, and we had to start chasing points...
Hat Tips:
1. Brian Robinson Jr. - 14 carries, 45 rushing yards and 1 TD. He always makes his impact felt whether he is getting the ball 10 times, or 20 times a ball game. I really enjoy having this kid on our team, as good things usually happen when he is involved in the offensive game plan.
2. Terry McLaurin - McLaurin was targeted early in the ball game and also made his impact felt on our two scoring drives in the fourth quarter. He was a questionable officiating call away from notching his fifth career 100 yard game vs. Philly. Despite all that, he still finished the day with 8 catches for 86 yards.
3. Curtis Samuel - 7 catches for 51 yards on the day was the stat line for Curtis. If EB focusses on continuing to find ways to involve this guy in the offense, we will be better off for it.
That's it for now. Do you agree/disagree? Who did we miss. Please make Thursday get here quick so the pain can go away...
