David Blough and the Offensive Staffing Thread

How do you feel about the Blough hire?

He talked about accountability and standards - cool. But everyone has those.

Blough said a whole lot without saying anything.

Yeah not much detail, looked nervous, very stiff personality, boring press conference. I've seen him interviewed in other settings -- also a bit stiff and boring. But some people I know are more subdued in front of a camera. So I am not writing him off. But he did nothing in that press conference that made me feel confident.

As for Daronte Jones, I was commented in the middle of his press conference how impressed I was.
 
Blough is who he is in terms of interviews. I've seen his when he started at QB for Detroit and it was the same. He didn't sound like a young QB. He sounded like Bill Bellicheck... Lol

Let's hope that he has the same success

He didn’t sound anything like Belichick. Belichick didn’t give away anything, and focused on the next thing, but would be very detailed at times and has a charisma that although he’s bland at times, you can tell he’s the guy you want to follow.

I got none of that here.
 
The most telling part to me was when Blough was asked what he learned from Kingsbury. The answer was gracious, but short. He said, he learned about the degree of pressure tempo puts on a defense. Nothing about player usage or scheming receivers open or anything else really.
 
I felt Blough delivered a lot of coachspeak. He wasn't informative, but that's so often the way in the NFL, isn't it?

I guess the most detailed he got was when he definitively said that Jayden would be playing under center next year and why.

Well I will say this to everyone in regards to Jones vs Blough. Imo, it is far more important for Jones to come across well to everyone because he was brought in from the outside, so they knew nothing about until this process.

Blough on the other hand was already in house. They know this kid. They've been around him every day for 2 years now. It means that everything we have questions about, they had no worries and we're secure enough in him to make that decision quickly.

They know his mindset, IQ, ability to design, dissect, etc. Not just them but the Ben Johnsons, O'Connells, and Campbell all feel the same way about him as our front office. Jayden and the players love him. Basically, he may suck in front of the camera but off of it, he comes across well to anyone whose ever come across him and I've seen the other side of him, clowning with Jayden so he does have some personality in their somewhere.

He's unknown to us but known to them and they are confident him. Jones was unknown to everyone so his presence and details in these interviews are far more important to me, even though his background is far more decorated than Bloughs.

I don't really care how Blough comes off in a press interview; I care about how well he can run an offense. He doesn't have to be an Obama-level orator in order to be a very good coach.

His hire was clearly a high risk/high reward play, so let's see how it shakes out.

It was though on brand for his whole interview, he wasn't mr. detail. Actually the tempo was a rare depature from him as to sharing a detail. So we know he likes tempo, play action and disguising plays. Other than that, he shared very little.

He expanded about how much Kliff meant to his career and how much Kliff shared with him his thinking, game planning and approach about offenses and how valuable it has been to him. But yeah he didn't expand as to the details of that. But it didn't actually dive into details on much.

I don't think its deep one way or another. I think they were both being themselves. I've watched interviews from both leading up to this.

Daronte came off like he did in other interviews. So did Blough.

Agree, you don't need much personality to be a good assistant coach. Boring can work. My comment on the boring part related to the thought that he's a HC soon. I made the same comment on ES when some were pushing Scott Turner (yes, really) as a future HC. My point then was he's unproven as a coordinator but listening to him speak, he was paint dry level boring, and I thought it will hurt him in HC interviews if he ever had one. I feel the same at the moment about Blough. But considering I don't care about him being a HC, it doesn't matter.

McVay is used as an example a lot as a young gun strategist and in turn would be a good HC -- but those who knew McVay well back then thought it was the combination of his personality and X's and O's. McVay exudes charisma. Blough IMO does not. The most personality I saw out of him was when he was on Hard Knocks cheering on his wife. But again, none of means he can't be a good offensive coordinator. I got no idea. Will see.

Sheehan had Scott on recently and I got the same feeling. For all of Jay Gruden’s shortcomings, he has some charisma

But that’s okay. Joe Whitt had me ready to run through a wall and all his defense did was run the wrong way.

Yup, me too and he sounded more guarded to me than nervous and even said he didn't want to give too much away while G&D were pressing him pretty hard.

Thought he was really funny when he told them while responding to creating a playbook question "bet you didn't know but we have a Madden expert on staff".... LOL

Joe Gibbs gave some of the most boring, no info press conferences in NFL history. All we knew was that we were going to have to fight our guts out.
