The problem of always getting a free agent answer is that we never give our pups a chance to grow. Now, if the team decides that Bill's ceiling is good and Love really is an Erik Dickerson, Marshall Falk, elite back...
This is kind of where I'm at too. We need a better pass catcher, and I think it's time to move on from McNichols--he's 30, provides a spark here and there, but overall very replaceable. Kenneth Walker is an upgrade, definitely in the receiving game--which will also keep Daniels upright more. Losing Ekler is not talked about enough--and I don't think they did a good enough job giving Daniels outlets. But how much of a running upgrade is he? He's actually only 2 months or so older than Bill, which is weird.

So we'll see, I get the pros and the cons to this argument. I am not sure how many resources to devote to RB either.

I think my biggest worry with Blough going into next season, isn't actually a worry about him and more so is a question on if AP will open the wallet and really give Blough the weapons he needs to succeed. We are currently sitting at 60ish million under the cap, probably end up closer to 80 once they cut Lattimore (they better cut Lattimore btw), I really hope AP breaks out that check book this year and gets some talent in the building. A lack of weapons will really hurt a first timer OC as all of the plays will have to rely on 1 or 2 players, and the other team knows that.

I’m confused. Is this the Blough/OC thread, the FA thread, or the Draft thread? 😎

Boone the above literally made me laugh, thanks for that haha.

The question I always wrestle with is how much improvement is fair to expect? Bill showed a lot for a rookie. I know ROTW doesn't mean enough but he shone enough to get it four times. Now, he does need to improve his pass pro and his hands (catching and fumbling,) but do we know he can't/won't do that?

The problem of always getting a free agent answer is that we never give our pups a chance to grow. Now, if the team decides that Bill's ceiling is good and Love really is an Erik Dickerson, Marshall Falk, elite back... then upgrade. But as with Magee and some of the other pups, I still don't know the answer. I don't know if they can be developed into a guy who can get the job done.

That's a problem.

If you always seek the sure thing in free agency, do you make every pup a perpetual back up?Maybe it do have to hedge your bet and find someone who can do it in case the answer is "no" but maybe the question of Bill, Magee and others is that we need to coach up our guy and improve their areas of weaknesses so that they can become the guy.

ROTW doesn’t just not mean enough, it means nothing. It’s really a fanbase award, our fans vote and vote and vote for any of our players that do enough to even qualify. Which, good for us, glad to see people caring after years of apathy. But it means nothing.

Oh wow what a surprise, the best and most qualified potential OL coach looks like he may already be in-house, what a fortunate coincidence!

We are so fucked. AP should’ve just cleaned house if nobody wanted to work here.

YES! FIRE EVERYONE!! WE'RE SO FUCKED BECAUSE WE'VE HEARD ONE NAME ASSOCIATED WITH OUR OL POSITION!!! SNYDER ALL OVER AGAIN!!!

Well to be fair we never burned it all the way down, I don't think we fired all of the concession stand vendors.

Yeah fuck those guys too. And the ticket takers...well the people that stand by the kiosks now. Oh, what about those useless twats in the team store?!

An exaggeration of my point to invalidate it, instead of trying to explain why it’s not a problem that promoting the no-experience assistant QB coach to OC might have restricted our options in regards to positional coaches. So far we’ve got the son of one of our executives, and an assistant coach who already worked here. Come on. That’s not an inspiring hiring process.

The decisions may work out. I’ll be rooting for it. The decision MAKING does not seem sound. If it’s lack of options, that’s one problem. If it’s incompetence, that’s a different problem. If we thread the needle and these all happen to be amazing hires, wow what a gift that would be considering we already fumbled this regime’s first attempt at coordinators. I’m sure that’s it though.

Keim drops these things when they’re likely to happen. I’m sure that guy will soon be announced as our OL coach. Always convenient when you’ve already got all the best people on your payroll and under contract, just waiting to be promoted after you failed in hiring their bosses!

The sky isn’t falling. You trying to characterize my post that way is reductive. The cracks in this regime have long been showing and the cement they’re liberally applying to seal them up, it’s of questionable quality.

Oh don't get me wrong Conn I agree with you 100% on the way this hiring process has been taking place. In another thread I posted my concerns with the FO and how they are managing the team (hope we see better 2026 in that regard).

Yes, the son of the executive who didn't know or have anything to do with the hire. But hey, don't let that get in the way of a good narrative and rant...

YEs, calling for AP to fire everyone if "no one wants to come here" is definitely not that at all. My bad. 🙄

I will react to an actual hire, the first name we've heard that they're interested in.

You can pluck sentences from my post that you think are easy to knock down instead of addressing the statements in context of the rest of the post, where they’re meant to be read and understood alongside the reasoning presented. But it won’t make for a very illuminating conversation. Effort was put into explaining my thought process, if you don’t want to address it then don’t quote me expecting a serious conversation.

This is not a normal hiring process. I do not care that it was reported that Doug Williams “didn’t know” his son was interviewing, that’s not how nepotism works. It doesn’t imply direct intercession on your behalf by the person whose name you were born with. It implies preferential treatment due to the name and connections, whether the person is involved or not.

Not to mention my entire point is that if they’re struggling to line up legit assistants who would want to work under such an inexperienced OC, a guy related to one of our execs is an obvious option to overcome that, whether he’s the best fit for the job or not. Same with our already contracted assistant OL coach who worked under the guy we weren’t happy with and fired. Already here, doesn’t require being rejected by outside experienced assistants who see this operation as troublesome or risky.

This hiring process is what it looks like when your coordinator choice can’t attract good candidates for assistant positions. That very much looks like people not wanting to work for you in the present circumstances. If that’s the case then the changes made weren’t big enough, or the wrong replacements were hired.

Or, the other option where this is a totally normal interviewing/hiring process and it’s all gonna work out hunky-dory and I’m a fucking moron for seeing the flaws in our hires or questioning the process. I’m sure that’s how it’ll work out. Flubbing the initial coordinators was probably the anomaly for Quinn. He’ll nail it this go around and won’t waste any more of our time.

Just to be contrarian (seems to be my role this offseason)

Many of us didn't really want Kliff to go because the offense performed admirably given all the injuries. Well, maybe that means that Blough and a number of other Kliff's assistants weren't so bad. So, if you didn't want Kliff to go maybe just maybe Kliff's underlings and position coaches not abandoning ship or getting a from promotion isn't the worst thing in the world. Maybe this is a vote of confidence for Kliff's staff and Blough too.

After all, we had some pretty highly regarded Offensive assistant coaches. The fact that they didn't leave may something about Blough and Kliff. The fact we were upset that Quinn's inability to work it out with Kliff upset us probably means we liked the job that Blough and the offensive staff did.

Wow, looks like I hit a nerve!

Nothing you said about Williams actually happened. He's been in the league 7 years. Thats not just because of his name. You openly we "should" view anyone who gets their start that way with skepticism. Because he has the same last name Williams, there's no way he deserves it. That's called bias. I sense a little envy and resentment too. But you know what? I'd venture 90% of the league gets their start through connections and people they know. It's how the league and a lot of the world works.

You're passing off your speculation as fact that they're struggling to bring in candidates. Keim said yesterday that they've been very tight lipped about who they're interviewing. We have no idea who they've reached out to, who they've interviewed. We didn't find out about the OC candidates until after the fact.

As for who they've reached did interview, the QB coach for Carolina was elevated to PGC, so I'd say he was a good candidate. Blough interviewed two people we know of. One was promoted. Those are facts, btw.

As for flubbing hires, the Eagles have fired two of the last three OCs they've hired. They fired both coordinators after 2023. What a shit organization they are, amirite?

I've repeatedly said I am not wild about the Blough hire. The learning curve is going to be very steep--but to just say he was hired without any thought is disingenuous. He was sought after by several organizations the last two years and the possibility of him leaving was very real.
