David Blough and the Offensive Staffing Thread

I keep thinking about our choice for OC and it doesn't make sense with our current situation. The only two logical reasons for Dan to choose Blough, in my mind, is either Dan knows no matter what he is not done after this year. Why else would he put his fate in the hands of someone who has never been an OC and really only has 2 years coaching experience at a low level. Or, Dan is panicing and wants total control over everything and wants a young coach he can micromanage.

Or he understands the success of 2026 is dependent on Jayden, so this was the path of least resistance to getting Jayden developed.

The crazier move would be to completely reset BOTH sides of the ball and expecting a seamless transition. Blough is likely the smoothest 'change' when it comes to the offense being different than it was under Kliff, but the language, and terminology, remaining largely the same.

I don’t think that Peters forced Blough on Quinn. I think Peters and Newmark’s opinions carry immense weight with Quinn and they potentially persuaded him towards Blough. Especially after Detroit called for the interview and really sped up their own process. Newmark is the forgotten one in all of this.

Honestly though, relying on Jayden to be a superstar is the reason we are in this mess in the first place. We have one of the worst rosters in the NFL and without a major overhaul it won't matter how good Jayden is. If you take Jayden off this team what the hell has Dan Quinn done but ride his coattails?

That's not really a fair argument considering the fact that the NFL is so dependent on the QB situation. The last time an NFL team lost it's top tier franchise QB and the team succeeded was when Matt Cassel came in for Tom Brady. It's vastly the exception, not the rule. You could make that argument for pretty much any coach out there.

Relying on Jayden to be a superstar is exactly what Quinn, or any HC needs to do, because you can't win without it. It's not a thing. Quinn needs to do what's best for Jayden's development, period. It's the ONLY consistent way to win in the NFL.

The more I think on the Blough hiring, the more at peace I am with it. I'm still convinced we are not a prime location for any coordinator to come to when the team needs a quick turnaround to kill controversy. But more importantly, it isn't the first time a QB coach made a sudden leap. It wasn't so long ago that Sean McVay had just left the team, Gruden had taken over playcalling, and he elevated some unknown backup QB-turned-QB-coach who had no playing accolades to be his OC. A lot of us were convinced that he was over-hyped by the time he left the team, not sure if he had even been calling plays. Now he's the head coach of the Vikings. In the absence of better coaches lining up to join a head coach on the hotseat, I'm willing to put some trust in Blough that he really will know what he's doing.

It's not all on him though Peters gets a big share of the blame as well. Our roster is arguably worst than it was 2 years ago with less draft picks. We couldn't even pick up draft picks before the deadline because no one wanted what was on our roster. Good teams can lose their starting QB for a few games and not skip a beat. Look at 49ers who played 8 games with their back up QB.

I’m sure Newmark is involved in some way as the #2 guy in the FO but his insight, at this point, isn’t special given everyone has worked with Blough for at least 2 years

You could also argue we would have been better off going 9-8 in 2024 with JD and the team on an ascending trajectory. Would have been legit work done in the offseason for a gradual improvement and perhaps the signings would have been more with a longer term view in mind. Not saying 2024 wasn't a blast but perhaps in the long run it lead to a false sense of "almost" being there where in fact JD and some fortunate plays gave a false sense of being very close.

2024 was absolutely awesome! But I agree, it hurt us in the long run. Now we a bad roster with less draft picks.

Maybe it's just me, but this isn't a bad roster. The Titans have a bad roster. The Jets have a bad roster. The Giants won 3 games, and are always one of the worst teams in the league. The Browns have a bad roster. The Raiders have a bad roster. Yes we have holes--but even remotely healthy this is a 9-10 win team last year.

Dart sucks. Skattebo is going to last about 4 years, if that, before he is eating Chunk Soup through a straw. They have a great pass rush, but can't stop the run and their secondary is worse than ours, despite adding a ton last year. Please.

First of all Dart does not suck. Second, you can have a good roster and still suck due to coaching and scheme. Perfect example, Giants go into the 4th quarter leading 19-0 against the number one seed in the AFC and lose the game. That's coaching! As far as the defense goes, there arent too many on our defense that you are taking over Lawrence, Burns, Thibodeaux, Carter, Banks, Okereke, Nubin, Holland.
