The point someone made about co-ordinators being short term hires, really struck a chord with me, great point. I'm hopeful last season was just a blip due to injuries. If Peters and DQ turn it round, I like how we are set up right now. The model of having a professional GM and HC with good leadership and interpersonal skills long term, with accepting changes happening at the levels below feels like a recipe for success to me. The succession planning is with the coordinators while AP and DQ keep everything stable through those changes. Its nice having good people to root for too.

They are basically the glue and keeping them together with a good relationship, and always prepared to change Coaches feels the right approach to me, rather than the constant HC changes when things go wrong. How many different co-ordinators have worked under Tomlin and Harbaugh, and been replaced, yet those franchises have generally stayed on a positive course and remained in the playoffs year on year?

That stability (and sanity) is something we have sorely lacked, so I find the idea of having a competent GM (jury still out but I'm hopeful) and a decent, proven leader of men as our HC, who we stick with, even if the road is bumpy at times, is something I'd like us to persevere with, for 3-4 seasons at least. I find the idea of fans clamouring for change if we don't make the playoffs next year a bit worrying - it needs to be built the right way, and set up for long term success.

The reality of the NFL is that any Coordinator, on either side of the ball, that performs well and stands out is going to garner HC interest from other teams.

So, I think you have to view them all as a rental. I mean, none of them want to be just a Coordinator.

Not only are they easier to give a chance to, it creates a locker room (especially for young QBs) that they're not changing systems every 2 - 3 years. Even if the OC changes every 3 years, if the HC is the one with the schematic foundation, then the language and everything that comes along with it remains the same. It's more sustainable if you're talking about a long term commitment to the offense.

Jayden is going to have to learn a 'new' system this year. Whoever comes in here likely gets fired, or promoted the same time that Jayden is completing his rookie deal, so it's a very real possibility that offensive scheme will be at the forefront of his negotiations. If you marry an Offensive HC with your new QB, that is a much 'easier' conversation, since the HC likely remains and is the one in control of the scheme they are running.

There's something I am noticing about coordinators looking for HC jobs, especially the top ones: they all talk about waiting for the right opportunity. I read that as they don't want to work for awful owners like the Jets, Browns, Titans, etc. There will still be those who "strike while the iron is hot" but others are more measured. Given the McDaniel has already flamed out at one stop--signing up for the Browns for example might just end his HC hopes.

This is complete conjecture on my part, and I am praying for McDaniel as our OC, so it's not like I'm unbiased--but it seems like a trend.

Exactly. The best move for him is to come work with Jayden Daniels which will further bolster his résumé and then he’ll have his pick of the litter of head coaching jobs in a couple years. Or perhaps he takes over for Quinn who will be gone if he hasn’t fixed the defense by then.

Problem is... with 8HC vacancies means that there are essentially 16 coordinator positions hires. (8 on each side) With Quinn being a lame duck and even with the potential to coach JD, Wash is one of the last destinations on the list.
Not much excitement on O other than JD that has health issues. One very good WR over 30 and not much else. No TE, No #2 WR worth a damn, (debo might not even stay on the team) and questionable Rbs with few draft picks remaining.
Worst D in the NFL needing a complete rebuild

I’ll still have very high expectations for AP, in a player personnel sense, that could be let down. He needs to nail FA and the draft to get me to believe in this staff fully. But McDaniel would be a great start.

That staff has a good reputation in general. Slowik as PGC and Studesville as RB coach would be good too. I just hope he would leave his OL coach there behind and bring in the ATL coach

Could AP / DQ have known McDaniel was going to be available, and that expedited their wanting to move on from Kliff if he wasn't committed to being here in 2026... that he was going to pursue HC positions?

Sometimes after getting the ax from being HC, that person might want to reset and take a break and go back to their strength (OC or DC), refresh and then get back into HC later. Just a thought.

If the NFL has proven anything, it's that whispers happen all the time. Guys 'know' things they aren't supposed to a lot. It's like the mafia, where almost everyone is connected through some level, and if Russini and company were able to identify that Kliff was on the outs, not sure why it's too far fetched to believe that the same type of information was drifting around out there regarding McDaniel.

I’d say unless they knew Harbaugh was being fired - no shot.

McDaniel getting fired this far away from Black Monday tells me that Miami was the 7th team who called Harbaugh on the report.

And it looks like they are going to get him.
