It is challenging to replace ONE coordinator and have a high degree of likelihood you hit a home run. And now we are replacing both of ours - the guy making the call will be the same one who just had to let go his first two choices.

The other factor which doesn't work in our favor is that Quinn is likely to be seen as having tenuous HC security at best given what's transpired. I think that's a big deal for prospective coordinators. Who wants to sign a contract to work with a guy who may not even be here is in a season or two?

Well, if you are the Lions and are losing Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn who with healthy rosters were winning 15 games then I would agree with you.

But Whitt hasn't been in the picture since he lost playcalling duties mid-season on defense, and we have been treading water on offense for some time.

On offense we don't run motion, we don't come out and matchup with opponents in formations to take advantage of mismatches, etc.

We are pretty vanilla and the ONLY thing that made Washington's offense special or different in a positive way was the individual talent of the #2 pick in the draft.

I am happy Peters moved quickly to clear these guys out.

I agree. Some potential candidates could see Quinn as on the hot seat and that could definitely make them think twice about coming here. If they think he’s only got one year left to prove himself in D.C. Depends on what the organization wants to see out of Quinn next season. Does an immediate turn around need to happen? Playoffs or bust? Competitive .500ish season?

Does he survive another season like the one we just had? Probably not.

What I want and what was missing this season is a coordinator that's able to pivot.

A pass first offense is great, but not when all your wide receivers are hurt and your running backs are hot. Man coverage is great, but not if you never generate pass rush pressure.

The injuries were a real factor and made it all but impossible for us to succeed this year. Heck, look at the Chiefs who didn't have it half as bad, but our inablility to change it up was also a problem. With McLaurin and Brown out and with Deebo dinged the game plan shouldn't be 3:1 pass. Moreover, there had to be a way to take advantage of Lane's speed and his punt return skills. Did we try him on any reverses? Any screens? Likewise, there had to be a way to get McCaffrey and Sinott involveld. Maybe they weren't "ready" but they can at least catch and the guys we put on the field ahead of them made us the team with the worst drop percentage in the league plus had no separation and a skillset that every secondary could erase one on one.

Same, but worse on defense. There's got to be a plan b. Simplifying can work a little, but simplifying also makes it easy for the opponent to diagnose. Maybe there is no good strategy when your top three edges are out (and they were already mediocre) and your secondary is equally awful, but try something. "What we do works," wasn't true for Norv and it wasn't true.

That said, I still would have brought Kliff back. I think he made lemonade out of a bad situation. I would have wished he had run more and diversified the run more (Why do you never call runs that take advantage of Bill's speed!) but most of the season we had crap talent and achieved average results with it.

It was more a commentary on our crappy track record in that regard, not about DQ’s choice.

But to answer your question… maybe. Depends on a ton of variables that I don’t have insight into. I would (mostly) have that insight were I in Quinn’s shoes though.

I actually think there is a chance DQ does survive next year.

I don't think they will be in a rush to move on from AP.

I think from AP's perspective, as long as DQ is going to stay out of the weeds, he can set the organization beneath him and lead it. The only thing I would imagine is, he has to have good reasoning for his decisions. To me, yes, I kind of agree - why did he pick KK and JW initially? Couldn't he have known better? From a high level, neither pick was "bad" but the things he reportedly end up not liking about them - it would seem proper vetting and interviewing could have figured out.

We'll have to see how it plays out. I think they can sell coordinators on the idea that DQ has a long rope. Whether he truly does or not, I suppose that could be debatable. For the reasons you said, though - I think they need to sell that. If I were interviewing for a coordinator position, I would want to know the criteria for "success" for both myself and the HC, so I could establish what the bars are. Generally that's not a bad thing to ensure you understand in any position, but in this potentially tenuous situation, it's especially critical.

I'd say the new OC will need to focus more on the run game. That means expect a new starter at LG (unless Coleman could dramatically improve inside) along with probably an all around RB to go with a YAC TE and a couple WR's

He showed he can play another year at least but I'd think about bringing Josh Johnson back as QB coach. Jay Gruden called him one of the smartest players he has ever coached and JJ has seen every system in the NFL, XFL, UFL and other leagues. My theory is he's going to be a good OC at some point

If you are him though, you'd rather get paid the $1.5M as QB3 next year vs $500K to be QB coach

An extension not getting done at this point with Paul is very telling. Even if your plan is Coleman at LG, you need insurance for him given how bad he looked earlier this season. Makes bringing Wylie back imperative at a minimum
