Daronte Jones and the Defensive Staffing Thread

would love for us to draft AJ Haulcy in the 3rd or 4th round. He was the lifeblood of the LSU defense this season along with Whit Weeks and Mansoor. Just a nasty and in your face safety who can hit hard and is solid in coverage. I’d stay far away from Harold Perkins. He’s too ad lib and constantly missed assignments for us even though he’s an athletic freak.

Watching Darone Jones' press conference, impressed. I talked about the scheme some in the FA thread which I am jazzed about. Impressed about what I've read about him.

He comes off really down to earth and sincere. No false bravado. Substance.

I like to read psychology, I took my share of social psychology courses back in the day, love reading about sports psychology, etc.

Jones hitting some key points about how players learn different and hitting the modalities -- visual, audiory, kinesthetic, talking about players motivated externally and some internally. A bunch of stuff that's clear this dude really doesn't just study scheme but how to teach.

But yeah overall comes off like a really good dude. When he says he's driven to connect and teach players I believe him.

Referencing Zimmer and Flores as influences. Working the scheme around the players. Talking about being aggressive.

Some of what he said is standard. But I love his delivery, he doesn't oversell it.

But the difference is Tunsil indeed deserves the next largest OT deal in the league, or close to it. So the starting point for what “wonky” means here should be much closer together.

Terry wanted Chase money as Terry McLaurin, which is a non-starter. He settled for what he was worth after lots of ineffectual temper tantrums.

Very different situation.

You know I like to hear that from Jones, however, he could have just come out and said "well to improve from last season we are burning every single thing Whitt came up with last year" That in in itself would have signified a win already.
 
I can see why Dan was blown away by Daronte. I had not heard a coach break down learning the way he had and yet, in a way that we could understand. Super excited
 
Jones is incredibly impressive and he spoke about things that I myself believe in within my defensive philosophy.

I think we got a good one there. And he’s very polished.

I didn’t feel that way about the other side.

OMG yes, he is impressive from demeanor, presentation to his individual player breakdowns (IEP as he referred to them), to his vast array of experiences and on on. And to you your point with DQ, he has similar beliefs and characteristics to DQ, just more eloquent

IEP is something in education. It stands for individualized education plan. It is essentially a plan to help a player learn and develop skills.

It basically breaks down what they are good at, where they need help and then methods to get them there.

I actually am not sure he has the same ideas as DQ. I think he’s quite different. But also at the same time compatible.

He was last year, too. Was a defensive/specs assistant. Going to O this year

It’s telling what the league thinks of him as a coach. After a career as one of the greatest slot receivers in NFL history and then 6 years as a lead receivers coach, it’s telling that no one gave him a real job last year and now he is a generic offensive assistant
