Daronte Jones and the Defensive Staffing Thread

Does anybody think it might be a good idea to hire one of these 1st time play callers, groom him while DQ continues to call plays this year until that guy is ready?

I think with DQ as the HC you aren't going to see a veteran DC with long history come here.

That kind of coach is going to want to go to a team with an offensive minded HC who will leave the DC alone to manage his side of the ball and install his scheme, etc.

While he may not do it, I think the perception is Quinn will be overlooking the coach's shoulder on that side of the ball and that isn't attractive to guys like Morris or a Schwartz if he becomes available.

Looking at what Mike MacDonald has done in Seattle, I think Washington made a mistake by having tunnel vision in regards to trying to land Ben Johnson and overlooked a guy that may very well have been the best choice of that group of hires in 2024.

So, we ended up with Quinn. He doesn't seem to radiate the kind of energy that we see from MacDonald or a McVay.

No, it's the truth.

But with the cap space and some creativity in the draft I think it's possible to make meaningful improvements and put much better PPG/A numbers up.

If you add in a coach that is given the latitude to sit guys and really run a hungry, aggressive scheme we can move from being a soft unit on that side of the ball to being one where opposing receivers and backs don't want to get hit.

How long has it been since that was the case?

If the Washington defense can get to middle of the pack the team can win some games.

So far in his career Daniels has had a worse defense to work with than Maye, Nix and the others.

That run defense in 2024 was among the absolute worst I have seen here since I started watching the team many years ago.

Undersized, under-talented and uninspired.

Yep, Washington seems as if it is waiting for a guy to make up his mind and meanwhile is letting other capable coaches sign with other teams.

This reminds me a bit of the narrow-vision focus on Ben Johnson in 2024 and wrote off some other coaches who actually wanted to take a HC job.

I don't think they're that interested in Al Harris for DC, Keim has reiterated this a number of times. I think they're waiting on Morris to decide, but I hope they're quietly waiting for Scott to become available, maybe Leonhard or Jones? We have no information as to their internal thinking, we are really left to guess at this point.

Keim does think the hire comes this week, and he's usually on point about that.

Yeah they may be missing out on guys or being rejected by guys, but I don’t think it’ll be Al Harris in that category. He really doesn’t seem like a priority for them, everything else aside

I'm intrigued. Seems like a high potential guy.

Interesting. I don’t hate it. Welcome back to the DMV, Daronte! He was great at LSU once Coach O put aside his ego and let him coach. He put Heisman winner Bryce Young in a blender at Bama that season and blitzed like a mad man. That was a fun game even though it was a L because we were so outmatched.

Keim this morning.

A. doubled down that the job security of Quinn has some overhang on this hiring based on some converstions he had in the league with sources

B. Mentioned maybe they'd interview Leonhard considering he seems to be a hot candidate and they didn't interview him yet. But that was a gut thought from him not something he heard.

C. They prefer a coordinator who called a defense but they might not be able to land those guys they want on that front.

D. Raheem has options potentially. But he doesn't think he will choose a TV job instead of coaching.

E. He's heard good things from the people he talked to about Daronte Jones including thinking he can implement Flores blitz schemes but reminded that other teams, Giants, Cowboys interviewed him and went elsewhere for the spot

F. Suspects Al Harris isn't the front runner for this at the moment.

G. Thinks the hire happens this week
Looks like "E" is pretty much on the money, from Keim

I’m not in love with it. But I’m not at all upset by it. And I think he is among the best we were going to do. Probably one of the better staffing decisions we’ve made. Not a lot else that I would have preferred. He’s going to bring some fun blitz packages, which I love.
