Daronte Jones and the Defensive Staffing Thread

I agree on Morris. He is a guy that has tasted the HC gig and probably is a guy that would be a coach in waiting for a HC job in 2027 if he comes here we likely are looking at turnover yet again.

I want to see the OC and DC be here in tandem for the next 2-3 years.

That would take us to the end of Daniels current deal and also provide Peters with enough time to assemble the talent for us to turn the corner on the defensive side of the ball and ascend as a complete team.

Graham has worked with perhaps the least talent along with Wilson. It's been Maxx Crosby and 10 nobodies on the Raiders for years.

Ulbrich's time with the Jets looks great but when you go down the roster of players he had in their primes it would be hard to be a bad defense with that talent.

So, he gets some kudos for organizing the unit and getting it to perform well but he didn't construct a defense from scratch and turn it into a contending unit.

Look at what happened to all those Jets players this season after Ulbrich left. Go one by one down the list and you’ll appreciate Ulbrich

They're better than whoever Wagner has aligned next to him as a true ILB.

I'm not counting Luvu as an ILB. He moves around too much.

That's the special sauce that makes him worth being singled out. It's kind of why I soured on Rivera. Rivera and Del Rio were supposed to be big shot defensive guys. More often than not, it was the defense that held us back.

If Quinn has defensive super powers worthy enough to make him a two-time HC when most teams opt for an offensive guy... then I want to see a damn good defense on the field. I can forgive a struggling offense, but the defense should not be confused, lost, and porous for two years in a row.

Under RR & JDR, it was the D that carried us. Remember we finished with 500ish records w Heinicke, Alex Smith and Carson Wentz as our starting QBs.

If DQ is self aware, he brings in a guy who runs a different defensive scheme because his has defects against the run and his defenses have gotten owned by Shanahan tree OCs, even the likes of Zach Robinson.

What’s cool about Ulbrich is that, even though he worked for DQ for years in ATL, he runs Saleh’s 3-4

Ok thought you were counting Luvu. What you are saying might be the case as Magee still has a long long way to go. That being said, there will be $2M LBs available in FA I would take over either guy

I have argued this before. There were years where the Rivera/JDR defenses were statistically good, but they were never game good. They never did well on third downs, ends of halves, or stopped anyone if the game was on the line. Folded almost every single time. As vanilla and pathetic as Scott Turner's offense was... the defense could not complete the contract of the "Offense makes no mistakes. Defense shuts down the other side. We win by a field goal contract."
 
Luvu is not the player that Washington thought they were getting. They saw him as a guy that was going to rise from 8 sacks in 2024 to being a 11-12 sack disruptor in 2025 and I think that is one reason Peters didn't prioritize pass rusher in Round 1 or 2 of the draft.

What they found out was Luvu is a bit on the smallish side to dominate in the front seven. He gets moved by not only OL but the better blocking tight ends in the league.

He's not a 260 type speed rusher that has enough size and strength to complement his quickness.

If he's not protected in the lineup by having an active defensive front four he's not going to get the production they were looking for.

The problem is they tried to move him to the edge instead of letting him roam at ILB because he free lances a bit too much and schematically playing him wide makes more sense.

But ultimately, it was a mistake. He is not an edge rusher. Just because he can do it on occasion doesn't make it a place he should be more than a rare occurrence.

Raheem Morris? If Raheem Morris comes here and does well enough to earn a THIRD shot as a HC, then we should rejoice. That’s two 3rd round picks because our defense was finally…good? You have a lot more faith in Raheem Morris as a DC than I do, if you’re worried about him being stolen away after one year lol. That means he’s good enough to be stolen a 3rd time.

I don’t think that’s true.
 
Morris was the DC on the 2021 Rams. He did a pretty good job with McVay over his term there.

All you need to do to disprove this is go to that winning streak in 2021 before everyone got covid.

The 23 season ended his coaching career but your argument doesn’t hold as a lot of this os about relationships.

You can’t tell me that Gregg Williams (who is in small division college football) would have done a worse job than Whitt this year

C'mon... your argument that Rivera/Del Rey fielded great defenses isn't really based on one half year stretch during Rivera's rookie year, is it? That's like saying if Heath Shuler played a good quarter of football he deserves HOF consideration.
