Covering the Commanders: Keim and Company Discussion

No coverage discussion should fail to mention Al Galdi - and he's at the top of my list.

Keim is probably the most solid in terms of being connected and having accurate sources. But good lord, he is one of the most boring personalities covering this team and it's not close.

I listen to it. It's good. The beginnings of it are a bit awkward where Jason talks about how Logan is his friend in multiple podcasts, and then in others about how he has a close group of friends and there is just so much he shares. its getting a bit weird. I get it Jason you don't have a ton of friends because you don't open up easily to people and you really really like becoming Logan's friend, but lol he should take that off the air.

They actually referenced it in the last show as a bit, almost like they read this thread. It doesn't really sound like a bit though when you listen to him. Don't care that much. I like the show but that part just comes off so odd to me.

I don't mind Smoot. But it's tough for me to take his draft takes seriously. We all get some takes wrong but we own up to them, I've never heard him own up to Forbes. He didn't just like Forbes, his enthusiasm for that pick maybe was the highest of anybody about any player I can ever recall. You'd think they just took a cross between Deon Sanders and Champ Bailey, the corner to end all corners, he's that good.

But Smoot is good. The dude who replaced Larry Michael, forgot his name, but the one who hosts the youtube pregame show for the team and does some interviews is brutally bad IMO. Comes off like a super nice guy. So I hold no aninimosity towards him but he's IMO a very poor man's Larry, cheerleader type. Larry for being a homer actually can talk football, this dude from what I can tell can't.

Like for example, pumping Joe Whitt. He will go I am so excited we got our Joe Whitt. Joe Whitt is really really good. Just nonsense fluff, that anyone of us could do easily and better.

Galdi is good. I used to love listening to him on Saturday when he used to have that gig for 980. I like his podcasts less than I did his radio segments. But I still listen to most of them.

I just don't care about all the DC sports teams. So he gives every team time and what you got like 8 minutes on Washington? So you almost never go in depth. Sometimes he will drag those smallish segments into two shows, two parters. But I find most of them forgetable even when he gets good guests because they are so short. But overall I like him. But I like more meat-depth out of a podcast and he can't do it because he's covering every sport on every podcast. But I do hear his B and G Gold promos so that part is cool. He's definitely knowlegable.

I agree on Smoot's football knowledge. He is a huge homer so I don't take his takes seriously. In some cases, he is joking around.

I’ve said this before, there are three types of roles in media coverage:

1. Analysts
2. Reporters
3. Personalities/show hosts

Logan would be an analyst, and is one of the better ones locally. Mark Bullock is also very good as an analyst. I can’t actually think of any other active analysts.

Galdi is by miles the best personality, and second place is not even within sight in my opinion. My second best would be Bram. But Bram isn’t currently as good as Galdi. However, this category is much more “eye of the beholder.” Some folks can like Grant/Danny, Sheehan, even that seriously moronic dumbass Chris Russell. Different strokes for different folks. In my opinion, most of the local personalities are hot trash. Sheehan was good. Every time I’ve listened to him recently he’s been pretty horrible. I keep coming back from time to time to see if he’s reverted to being good, and so far that hasn’t happened.

Keim is probably the best local reporter. But I don’t think he really gets a lot of info from the team. I think he pieces things together well and has good outside sources. Even though he has his own podcast and substack, I still see Standig as a reporter. He actually had the Biadacz news first, I think.

JP is both a reporter and personality. He’s probably a better personality than reporter.

Problems arise when a person in one role tries to do something they’re not qualified to do.

Logan’s connections are kind of crazy. Raih was his college position coach and the new position coach at TE was his position coach in Atlanta. Add in him playing for DQ and being with AP in SF. He also played with Tunsil and Jacob Martin in Houston

Did Callow leave Bram's show? He got his own show, and I know he produces the Caps broadcasts, so maybe it's temporary, but I haven't heard him on the show. I was super busy for a while and wasn't listening for maybe 2-3 weeks, so I don't know if there was some announcement.

You can tell the Washington Post Sports section is running with a ghost crew. Not only is the section way too small, it looks like they are heavily dependent on the wires. Today, they had a big feature about NFL free agency without any mention of the 'skins. We weren't part of their winners and losers' list. More tellingly, there wasn't a standalone article about all the new signings. It's pretty sad. For so many years, we had one of the best sports sections in the country. Look how many of our reporters and collumnists got poached and became ESPN or TV regulars.

However, anyone who didn’t see this coming with two simple factors (actually just one, but two iced it):
1) the media landscape changing
2) Bezos buying

I don’t know that they even came close to trying everything possible. NYT stock is up something like 50% or more over the past two years. So… yeah. I think there were probably some different options out there. That’s why I do think Bezos shoulders specific blame.

I am going to double down that literally none of the local reporters are getting any info from the team unless they report it and either attribute it to a specific person or “a team source told me.” I believe (unlike when JLC said “sources, I think those were mostly in his head) that the current group of beat reporters are pretty clear when they are speculating based on things they hear from “other league sources” which generally translates to agents, or from the team itself.

Keim on Thursdays pod: “first round of FA done, going to have the next pod on Monday, don’t think anything will happen between now and then.”

The team signs Paul, DBrown and I think one more guy on Friday.

Keim does pod on Friday night.

He, nor any other beat reporter, had any idea the were targeting these guys or even if something was going to happen.

All of the info they get is from outside the team. Unless it is specifically attributed to the team, I think Peters is running a really tight ship. I don’t think team sources are even giving the local guys hints or ideas what they are thinking.

That doesn’t stop other FO’s or agents from saying stuff. But I don’t think it’s coming from within.

Ironically, I think Standig has been the best this off season of guessing or knowing things first. Never thought he was a break news kidof guy, but he’s hit a couple things this off season. He had the Payne news fist an I think he also had the Biadasz news first.
