I love hearing Kliff say that he learned from something.

I think that’s a huge common theme amongst the coaching staff. Quinn hired an outside consultant after he was fired by Atlanta to do a 360 feedback exercise. Kliff was fired and clearly is self aware. All the coaches seem to be willing to learn and adapt and take responsibility.

That’s a huge change from Jay, who was a moron who called the same running play on every first down after McVay left and never (to this day) learned a damn thing, or Ron who felt his was was entirely not the problem in Carolina and just moved the whole program to Washington.

Such a big change. And a welcome one.
Ron definitely never believed he was the issue in Carolina. To your point, he not only brought his staff to Washington, he continued to bring his players.

Danny was certainly the opposite of being self aware...I will stop there before a deep digression rant begins.

It is so refreshing to have a group that take on their new and past so responsibly and self motivated to work to learn how to improve.

In listening to Keim, it’s unclear what his final position will be, tackle or guard. I doubt they will have a high enough draft pick to get an elite tackle prospect, so from the draft perspective, they’ll be looking at about the same range of tackles as where they drafted Coleman. I also doubt there will be a franchise LT available in FA.

My guess is Coleman will stay on the left side and they will try to draft and develop a replacement for Wylie. Biadacz in the middle and Cosmi are good.

But I do believe Coleman will improve significantly from where he is now.
I agree that reaching an OLT in the draft or FA will be difficult.

It would be preferred to be able to bring in a rock star LT and move Coleman.

My gut is they end out leaving him on the left side and looking for a new starting RT and a G.

I guess we're lucky that we still need a corner, an edge, and a tackle. Plus, a wide receiver. So, whoever falls will probably fit a need.

Happy for Z this morning. Cast off by the Eagles, he had an up and down season with us, but because of his drops many thought Osborn would immediately supplant him. Instead, he got 6 receeptions and and pair of touchdowns. No one even thought to ask him about whether he felt this was a revenge game lol

I actually disagree with both the how and the when issues in the running game. There is actually a ton of creativity. They use pulling players at every level, read option looks, zone and power. Remember, the run game was really working well the early part of the season. And I think that was almost entirely due to scheme and timing

The dirty little secret is, however, our OL cannot beat better DL players 1:1, and BRob is good but not great.

Kliff has had to be creative to make up for these deficiencies. But some of it has been figured out and now it’s back to execution, and we aren’t great at that because the OL, specifically the tackles, aren’t great in individual matchups.

So, the question now is, what can he change to try and generate more of a run game with more smoke and mirrors.

Or can he? Or do we have to adapt even more to using the quick pass as a substitute to the run game. I get sticking with the run game, but at some point, you can’t bloody your head in the wall by banging your forehead on it.
Truth! The OL needs more talent. Cant question their heart but for the most part they have a hard time one on one. TEs dont seem to be consistently picking up their blocks like earlier in the season.

I’m getting the box ready to send Ron his ring.

Seriously. If he hadn’t completely bottomed out the roster and drafted horribly, Peters wouldn’t have had the assets needed to build a professional roster.

Dotson is a prime example of an asset Ron got for Peters.

Funny and true, but to extend it even further I’m not even 100% sure that Peters takes this job if we don’t have the #2 overall pick in a strong QB draft. He really was waiting for the perfect opportunity and got it.

Maybe he would have after being pitched by Harris & Co., but you just never know

And now it looks like he got out of SF just in time. Brutal injury year for them, but still. He sold high on that resume entry and bought low on us. Smart guy

On this note, I wonder if Johnson is regretting his choice. Sure, his Lions are doing great and he is getting all the flowers, but Daniels could have been his for a decade.

He's probably going to get caleb williams and an arsenal of offensive weapons.
I think that's a pretty good consolation prize.

Johnson can suck it. Prompted by last year's antics, he is one of the few people I wish bad luck on (football related only).

The crazy thing is, there have been a number of times this season when I felt Kingsbury was TOO committed to the rush, and TOO determined to stick with the rush despite not having great production doing it. When's the last time we had an OC you could say that about? For decades our primary complaint about our offenses, especially in games where we fell behind early, was that we 'gave up on the run'. I haven't seen Kingsbury give up on it once this season, so much so I've found myself saying 'it's not working - stop trying to run when you can't do it effectively!'

I do think we overestimate Brian Robinson Jr.'s talents and abilities at times. He's a good back, but I don't see him as a top tier difference maker. Austin Ekeler IS that guy and you've seen how much we've struggled since he went to IR in comparison to prior to that. And of course, the blocking has not been great.

I have to believe that if they add some real road graders on that OL and find a true top tier NFL RB in the draft, that we will appreciate Kingsbury's rushing attack a lot more. Having a really dominating rushing attack, and a QB like Daniels with a couple WR upgrades - that's the stuff that Super Bowl appearances are made of...

There was a point earlier in the year I would agree there was creativity. Now the only thing that changes is how close the WRs are to the line when it's a shotgun snap and handoff. That's our only run. We don't even do the 2 RBs back there where the Defense guesses who will get the ball.

Daniels isn't a huge guy. But we rarely have him under center to take the ball and shove forward. We never handoff for a run from under center. Or play-action from there. Our QB and Center I think are good enough that exchange and not doing it is removing options. Yeah, a lot of teams mostly play from the shotgun. That's fine. But MORE from under center is needed to help the running game and to be honest, the entire offense.

It's not obvious or easy - especially from our vantage point - to separate this type of analysis. It can always clearly be either, we just have to have some clear evidence (at least) and even then, talking in absolutes is pretty difficult.
I can easily point to the really strange predilection for shotgun handoffs to BRob, and then running up the middle, on 3rd. It just doesn't work, the defense knows what's coming... and yet Kliff calls it. Repeatedly. In multiple games.

If that doesn't betray a problem with creativity... I don't know what to tell you. You have to change things when they aren't working, you have to be able to tell when the defense is reading certain situations. It can also be a tool - you can have a play that looks exactly like that, fake that handoff and then kill 'em deep etc. Of course - again - we always have to admit that some of those plays also may need some blocking and other factors they may not trust - but that doesn't mean they should run that play again, in certain apparently very readable situations.

There were a couple of plays (not just that one ^^) where it looked like the defense was clearly in the know on what was coming. There is a tendency problem; it's more than just "the OL is bad" and "the RB is not great" - when the defense knows it's a run, it is a completely different dynamic. Your OL and your RB are both going to look 10 times worse if your scheme is being read too easily. I am not saying either of those components are world-beaters or would win with better scheme, but I am saying I have seen a few too many instances where scheme did not help them.

I pointed out at least a couple of those cases that are clear.

By the way, I am a big fan of passing when we have to, knowing the strengths.... etc etc. However, I can say that the makeup of this team does not spell all-out passing or Air Raid. This team would do better with more balanced creativity, not just playcalling. When you say "the run game was working earlier" as evidence of creativity... no, the run game was working because it was new, and the team was playing inferior talent. (** Actually, this is not totally true; we have lost some of the twists that were being run earlier this year; I don't have the numbers, but I am pretty sure we run to the outside significantly less than before **) By the way, a lot of tendencies (significant) were broken against the Titans. It isn't a coincidence that they had a huge offensive output against a strong D there.

This Eagles game was also not bad at all. They did really well with the passing game (although again - Daniels bailed them out bigtime more than once, which is going to happen and lucky us for having him). The running game struggled, and it did not feature great creativity, and it also had some unforced errors on individual players (BRob! Come on, man).

Alternatively, run the ball well enough, protect well and develop a really good passing attack.

Daniels can run and help the run game. But he can also throw to win.

I think balance is best but I’d like the run game to compliment the pass game and not vice versa.

Ron Jawarski said it in the 90’s. It was true then, it’s true now: points come out of the passing game.

Slotball is right. Let’s get back to the thread topic

I still think Ben Johnson will flop as a HC… a lot of question marks out on this guy…. After his whole didn’t inform us of his decision to stay in Detroit till well after the brass was already on a plane heading to Michigan to interview him for our opening a lot of ppl wondering… also is he a front of the room guy or a guy who sits in the back…will he command a full room and team and also let’s not forget the talent level on the Lions is really only 2nd to the Eagles and some could agrue they might be better…OL and TE probably are better and Goff is better then Hurts too…. Johnson won’t have nearly as much talent level around him… kinda reminds me of Brian Billick when in Minnesota had all those offensive weapons at his disposal but when he got the Ravens gig his offenses never resembled his Guru tag….

I agree with those. The last thing I want out of my head coach is one who is bad at communicating. Not telling Harris and Peters that he changed his mind and letting them fly is pretty damn bad. It's the kind of thing that in some businesses leave a permanent mark. I don't know if the NFL is like that, but it is a pretty small and incestuous world.
