Coaching staff thread

a review of the pending free agent tackles shows Trent Brown and Mekhi Becton being the top two graded OTs by PFF.

Brown has a history of weight problems although he had monster seasons in 2019 and 2020. Becton is a lot younger at 24 but has been inconsistent with the Jets. He openly spoke about going elsewhere in 2024 and showed no interest in negotiating with New York for a new deal.

Unless Washington is going to look at Becton as a RT and gamble the 24 year old lives up to his billing as a physical run defender and capable pass blocker, we are going to have to look at the draft to upgrade this position significantly.

So, if we do trade down again I wouldn't go any lower than a few picks within the top 10 as we need to come out of 2024 with a top left tackle prospect AND a right tackle as well somewhere lower down.

McShay believes OL is one of the deep positions in the 2024 draft and players in Rounds 2 and 3 can come in and be contributors right away.

So, perhaps a couple of OL selections in the top 45?
 
First thing I’d like to see is for them to trade or release Logan Thomas. Sub-par play, frequent mistakes, and the first player to bitch about coaching (even to the extent of undermining them). He is under contract for 2024 but I’d move on. I think what they do with Thomas will be an early sign of how savvy their player assessment is.
 
I think Peters after seeing Thomas try to block against San Francisco has an idea about the capability of the player :D
 
Jack of all trades: Asst OL coach, offensive perimeter coach, WR coach, OC & WR coach, senior offensive analyst
 
6’5, wide catch radius 😉, fast (4.5 40), athletic, etc. Question is- how is his achilles rehab progressing and does the injury negatively impact his athletic abilities?
 
I was sitting in on a meeting helping my friends coaching staff out for the upcoming season. As we were watching a bit of film on a kid (TE) they have to play who is the real deal, one of the coaches said that not only does he have an insane catch radius but the kid can play 2-3 positions in their offense. The coach beside him said that he wished he had a kid who such position flex. All I could think of was this board throwing sh*t at them.

Our players are being viewed with a new pair of glasses. Some things they stunk at won't matter and I know there will be moments where our new staff will be saying why in the hell did they try to get him to do that. I am having fun now trying to figure out from 30,000 ft what this offensive staff is going to try and do with the minds they assembled. I am eager to see who we resign first.
 
Rogers can play in-line (probably not a stout blocker though), good in motion, could be a tall option spread out, and could throw on a trick play (college QB). He is 26 and due to make less than 1m if he sticks.

I only got a small sample size prior to his injury but I really liked what I saw.
 
I think you keep Rogers but given he has no NFL track record, Peters has to go into FA and try and find a veteran TE to stabilize the position for either a new quarterback coming in or for Howell, etc.

All of the successful offensive teams seem to have a pass catching tight end - KC, SF, Baltimore, Detroit, Dallas, Philly, etc.
 
I think we have too many Johnsons running around on the coaching staff. Maybe that's to compensate for not hiring Ben Johnson? And all our Johnson are B Johnsons. Brian Johnson, Bobby Johnson, didn't get Ben Johnson? What the hell is up what that? Lots of Johnsons.
 
The other thing we have is a LOT of former NFC East coaches, whether assistants, coordinators, or other.
 
If you can’t beat them poach them

The Johnson hire is the first one that has me scratching my head. Granted, the Giants had some historic injury issues on the OL this last season and they played 3 different QBs during the season, but this hire still feels a bit underwhelming.
