Coaching staff thread

While I'm sure Izzo is a good coordinator and coach, I view Special Teams rankings as more of a statement on the strength of the front office. STs is all about the backend of the roster and how strong that is. Lots of NFL teams have competitive "starters" but what you do on Special Teams - that is almost all on the backups and how good your depth is.

So while Izzo has done a great job in Seattle, he is going to need Peters to continue to perform like that here.
 
So, I think the fear that Quinn is going to make Washington Dallas East can be put to rest. This feels much more normal. We are missing still that up and comer coach who can become something special, but Quinn is casting his net fairly wide.
 
the profile of the 'best' special teams performers is not necessarily the same as that of guys you are projecting to be regular NFL starters.

there are certain players good teams like the Steelers or Ravens consistently draft guys who come in to be special teams contributors and then whatever else they develop into over time.

Spurrier I was too young to pay that much attention, and im not even sure what all could be consumed in that pre-social media age.

Gibbs had crazy good coaching staffs in his return. I seem to recall. Blanche, Williams, wasn’t a huge fan of the militant Saunders but he was widely respected.

I don’t for the life of me recall the spurrier coaching staff situation. I am, however, willing to be it went as well as everything else HC related for the guy that was more interested in playing golf than running a team.

Shanahan put together an all star cast. But at the time, all I recall, is our idiotic fans declaring Kyle Shanahan a loser who only got a job cause of daddy. So while an incredible staff was assembled, no one recognized it.

I don’t recall anything special about Rivera and Gruden, outside of Gruden keeping McVay on to promote to OC for the little time he remained.

Gibbs was a HOF coach returning to the league with an owner willing to throw big money around. I’m ok highly rating his staff but, I feel like this a huge exception in terms of the respect and pull he had to recruit people.

No one recognized Shanahan staff’s greatness in the moment. Or at least not nearly enough people for it to be overwhelmingly positive.

This may be the best, recognized in the moment, coaching staff search and process we’ve seen in 25 years.

(Not to be confused with meaning they’re actually any good together, we can fairly judge that as time allows)
 
Shanahan's staff did get recognition in some write-ups. There were discussions about how they went through a process designing an offense for RG3 and Alf; you can't have an offensive season with 2 rookies like that and not get some recognition to offensive coaches, that was just a crazy season. For those reasons, subsequent offensive struggles were more easily blamed on RG3; if there wasn't some recognition of the talent they had in the offensive coaches, there would have been more questions in the following struggling years.

As for Quinn, I like what I see too. Hope it all translates; the secret sauce always has to get the right coaches and players together. This at least looks like a competent staff; good start. Much better than what Ron had going here for years with Scott Turner followed by EB. That simply looked incompetent for too long. I am looking forward to the OL coach hire. From this article, it looks like they spoke to a Texans coach (and tried to get more DAL coaches, but were denied by DAL themselves: https://sports.yahoo.com/commanders-interview-texans-assistant-offensive-054108543.html).
 
Quibble on Shanny's staff. He put together an all star cast on offense and our offenses were good though we complained about him not running the ball enough. In fact, I remember saying we needed to fire Shanny, but wished there was a way to keep Shanny Jr. However, Shanny's teams were one-sided. Haslett was terrible here. We had strong offenses, but putrid defenses.
 
I’ll also add, were any of the other guys on staff considered future superstars? Because at that time, I don’t remember anyone beating down the doors to talk to any of the assistants, except Kyle. The other guys have developed and have made names for themselves. The one guy that stayed was McVay and he’s the only one with a Super Bowl (so far). And from what I see, only Raheem Morris was on that staff in LA. So at the time, none of those guys were seen as anything special. There of course was major disfunction in this organization at that time. But Mike Shanahan was part of that disfunction as well which led to his firing. So in Steve Spurrier 50/50 hindsight, it would have been great to keep all those guys. But it wasn’t going to happen and I expect those guys would have had the same failures as the coaches who were here after the Shanahan era.
 
It's not just about hiring coaches that have upside for their futures in the NFL. You want coaches that are good for the slots they are filling NOW and will excel at the job given.

Not everyone wants or is skilled in the right way to become a successful HC in the league.

Some of these guys are just great coordinators or quarterbacks coaches or defensive line coaches, etc.

Losing Jordan feels like a loss, but I'm not sure if it is. We've had good runners here. CRob seemed to get better in terms of his hands and catching this year. Chris Rodriguez seemed execute will, but Antonio Gibson never developed as much as any of us would have liked. So, how much good that we see in our runners is what they arrived with and how much did he improve their game? Pass blocking, anticipating holes/using blockers, ball security, pass routes
 
I think on offense, we are going to see some of the changes that aren't necessarily a statement on the quality of the current coaches, but more related to experience with the Air Raid, or modified version Kingsbury plans to run. I'm just guessing that certain schemes and concepts will be quite different from whatever you want to call what we've coached players to play here previously, and that Kingsbury is going to want guys more familiar with what he wants to do.
 
Makes sense. Under Rivera, we seemed to favor the three yards and a pile of dust bulldozing running back. So style of runner may also change.
 
Funny, though because IMO Brian Robinson is a LOT more than Rivera thought he was capable of.

Robinson not only had impressive quickness for his size, but good hands and the chance to make plays in space.

I think a new approach can get a lot more out of him.

If we shopped him in the offseason I bet Kyle Shanahan would be an eager purchaser ;)

Glad that we're keeping Kerrigan. I think he has talent. I view 2023 as a mulligan, but when Rivera fired the old D Line coach and replaced him with his assistant and added Kerrigan the improvement was immediate and visible. A lot of the players talked about how much Ryan helped them, too.
