Clinton Portis to Retire a Redskin

you're right on the drinking part Mike. Can't recall which game...it was a big one....but I remember a sea story where Riggo was basically hung over/still suffering the effects of too much partying. Perhaps someone else remembers the full story.
There are so many.........

The one I remember Riggo telling was the night before the game, Dave Butz tells Riggo, "I'm going out and drinking with you tonight."

Riggo is like "Ok Dave, come on!"

Dave leaves early...Riggo comes in late and feels like hell on a Monday Night vs the Chargers.

Runs for 90+ yds and a couple of tds....

that's the one! didn't Gibbs walk in at the wrong time and catch Riggo ralphing before the game?

My favorite one is they are sitting in a meeting before a game, when all of a sudden they hear what sounds like water beingpoured out.

Everyone looks over at Riggo and he's passed out flat on his back, buck naked, peeing straight into the air.

Riggins was Portis, before Portis. He got away with many things, and was given special treatment, just like Portis, because he showed up on gameday. He skipped practices, showed up drunk, and basically did whatever the hell he wanted to.

He also ran behind the greatest Oline in football.

Had Portis been so fortunate, he'd be sportin' a ring, too. Then, like Riggins, all his transgressions would be, acceptable.

Oh, and BTW, if Larry Brown ran behind the Hogs, he'd probably have a ring, or two, and undoubtedly, would be the all-time leading rusher in Redskins history. By far.

He still is anyway, in my book.

Yeah - I think this is dead-on. They really played and lived in a similar way. Say what we want about some of Portis' more 'non-productive' antics, the guy played with heart and guts. It's impossible not to forgive him the other stuff when you consider how he played the game.

And I think a review of his many alter ego's is in order :)

I'm happy he's retiring a Redskin, he may have not played on great teams, but he was a great player, great character and fun to watch.

This is a fun thread. :)

One minor quibble: I love the Hogs, and they were truly a great, great line and several of them deserve to be in the Hall of Fame. That said, in 1982 they weren't anything special yet. They were still a bunch of really raw, young guys who had had an ok year. What Riggins did during that superbowl playoff run was absolutely, totally and in all other ways incredible and amazing. I have the 82 NFCCG and SB17 on tape (yes tape) and I watch them quite often (especially these days :) ) and our line play was not all that. It was fair, but far far more impressive were the yards Riggins banged out all by himself. He was simply inhuman during that four game stretch, and that is the reason he is in the Hall of Fame today.

Portis had a really great run at the end of '05. It was a run worthy of hanging one's career on, and like I said earlier in this thread Portis deserves all the credit in the world for carrying the team to the playoffs that year. But that run was merely a shadow of what Riggins did with, in my opinion, a lesser OL (though a better QB.)

And that really is the one big difference between Riggins and Portis. Riggins played better than any RB has ever played, ever, in the 82 playoffs. Portis did not. That's not a huge knock on Portis, mind you. He was a great player for us. But he wasn't Riggins. Not like that.

Carry on.

Henry, while I won't say you're wrong...Russ Grimm against Randy White in that Championship game was probably why he is in the Hall of Fame. Not to distract from Portis, but the OL he had his first few seasons was pretty darn good.

I was very impressed with CP's written statement in the WP. He really showed a lot of maturity. If he'd had some gas left and Stone Hands would have caught that INT, I believe we could have been a team of destiny that year. Oh well...thanks for the memories CP!

most famous play in Redskin history has Grimm in the middle of it!

50 GUT!!!

Portis flipping in to the end zone will always be in my head. Portis lifting his jersey to reveal the tribute to Sean will too. Portis' mom whoopin on a retarded Iggles fan is up there.

But to me...Clinton was a team player. We asked him to put on weight and he did. We asked him to stop slashing to the outside and run up the gut more and he did. We asked him to stick in the pocket and pass protect and he did. Yes, he had his special place with Dan but the guy gave up his body and definitely shortened his career by playing for us.

I think that's a fair assessment. Ultimately, CP was a gutsy, tough back. A shame he didn't play on better Redskins teams and had more chances to shine in the post-season.

Exactly.

His career here was being the only consistent weapon, on an offense who's passing game usually couldn't put the fear of God into a nun.
