Burner's Burning Questions: The Fifty-Three Man Roster And Practice Squad

Seastrunk shined against guys who won't be on a team in September. Thats fine, and because of that he now has a chance to make the team. Helu has started in this league, which is why he was playing with the first team against starters (and well, I might add).

Against the third-stringers Redd looked ok. I didn't see anything special from him though. Hes getting some good tape for himself, but I would be surprised if hes on this team when the regular season rolls around.

Agreed, but I absolutely could see them moving Helu to primarily a backup role behind Morris, while Seastrunk sees a lot of 3rd down and passing situation snaps. Thus Helu is 'ahead' of him on the depth chart, but utilized less in the game.

Tracy Porter sounds like he may not make it.

Crawford and Porter, or our nickel corner position might be the weakest part of our team.

A little concerned about Phillip Thomas. Might be looking at the PUP if he doesn't get in there soon. A second year guy with no experience needs as many reps as he can get.

Ex-Bulldog Phillip Thomas puts injury in past, seeks key role with Washington Redskins | Fresno State Football | FresnoBee.com

A Lisfranc foot injury cost Washington Redskins strong safety Phillip Thomas all of his rookie season in 2013.

But he did not stay discouraged for long. Why should he?

He had gone through it all before and emerged as a national college star. Thomas missed all of his junior season in 2011 at Fresno State, suffering a broken leg and a dislocated ankle in a non-contact drill three days before the opener.

Then he bounced back in a big way, earning All-America status the next year while finishing with eight interceptions.

Now back in Redskins camp, Thomas says he believes there is nothing preventing him from being as productive as he was in his final season with the Bulldogs.

"If everything goes like it did in Fresno, then maybe I will get a whole bunch of picks and make a name for myself out here," he said.

There still is some rehab work to do. Doctors cleared him for the Lisfranc injury -- which can involve a fracture and dislocation -- in late March. But a balky hamstring forced him to sit out the team's preseason opener Thursday.

"Just working through that right now," the 6-foot-1, 223-pound Thomas said. "As far as the foot, I'm feeling great. But running to the ball I felt my hamstring grab. It's something that is real minor."

Thomas is happy that at least the major injury he suffered is in the rear-view mirror.

"I've been waiting a long time to get back out on the field. It's a blessing that I came back and really had no worries," he said. "I've been able to run ... change directions, and I'm back to where I was at before."

That ability is why the Redskins selected the Bakersfield native in the fourth round (119th overall) in the 2013 NFL draft.

Thomas was ready to show off those All-America skills until he injured his foot in the first preseason game last season against the Tennessee Titans.

"It was terrible and depressing," he recalled. "I've been here before. I had to find a way to get myself back healthy and be prepared to play again when it's full-steam ahead. Can't be really down on it for too long. You just got to be a pro about things and do the best you can to get back on the field as soon as possible."

A lot has changed in a year for Thomas and the Redskins.

Jay Gruden replaced Mike Shanahan as the head coach, and Washington signed ex-Pittsburgh Steeler Ryan Clark as the new starting free safety.

What hasn't changed is Thomas' defensive back coach. Raheem Morris returns for his second season with the team.

During training camp, Morris pulled Thomas to the side and told him what he wants this season.

"Be vocal," Thomas said.

Thomas is OK with that, saying he is relishing the role but also "looking forward to making plays."

"That's something coach Morris has harped on me about," Thomas said. "Be vocal and be a leader. Just study my playbook and be in there and just be a guy that doesn't really have to think much so I don't have to make many corrections."

Thomas is second on the depth chart behind Brandon Meriweather, and that's fine with the challenger. At least for now.

"It's been great," Thomas said of camp. "The injury that I had, people say it was pretty excruciating, but I wasn't going to let it slow me down and I came back and I've been doing good. Running around and I'm just ready to play."

Agreed - I have high hopes for Thomas if he can recover from the Lisfranc issue - which apparently is not the easiest thing to do.

I had this list ready to go a couple of days ago, but the last minute change with Bowen has everything to do with the contract. He could be removed from projected roster when details of the contract emerge.

Somehow I see McGlynn in as the best option for a backup Center. Probably the best option as a backup at Left Guard outside of Kory - leaving a hole back at C.
Add him and drop - Compton as the 4th OT. Four OTs sounds like one too many but as always - could be wrong.
The Bowen deal is gonna be real interesting - especially if it turns out to be one of those injury kind of, 'no pay for no play' types. Still leaning towards him starting the year on the PUP.

If Rashad Ross keeps it up with KRs - how (or if) do you think he fits in?

I tend to agree. The Redskins could keep him on the PUP and then place him on IR after six games. He can keep the new salary as a way of saying thanks for re-working the contract. He gets some extra cash over the next few months and the team gets a nice break on the cap.

Doesn't Hankerson have to be included, or does this not include players on the PUP list.

Another thing that I've always been foggy on is the ability to cut a player who's hurt... are there restrictions to that or can we just let him go and pay the contract penalty.

It's a foggy subject with a lot of variables. Basically two kinds of PUPS - regular season (Reserve/PUP) and training camp (Active/PUP). Regular season; player is on the list for 6 weeks. After that the team has to put him back in practice or activate him within certain time limits (don't remember them exactly). If they do not, he stays PUPed the rest of the season or sent to IR. PUP players do not count against the 53 man roster.

During camp, the player can come back anytime after he gets medical clearance but the team does not have to pull him from the PUP. They can keep a player on the PUP after preseason ends and into the season but are not required to do so. If they remove him from the PUP they can then activate him to the regular roster, send him to IR or waive/waive with an injury settlement.

Most of the time they wind up on IR if not activated depending on how they get released. Again a lot of variables so this is very basic. Cut & waived get used interchangeably a lot but they really do not mean the same thing. Hank could be cut (released from the team) but only if he is active. If he is active he counts against the roster. If PUP or IR or Active his salary counts against the cap.

One example; Rice Jr got waived on an injury waiver. Then he cleared waivers. He automatically reverted to the Redskins IR list, where he is now.

I suppose another option they have for Hank would be the IR/designated to return but I certainly hope they would not go that route in this case.

Clear as mud, right?

I think we keep Neild. And since Baker, and probably Cofield too, can also play end, no need for the free agent.

Geathers is big, but I don't remember anything that stood out about him, so far. Maybe I just missed it.

Redskins.com lists Santana Moss as the back up to Garcon on the depth chart... Maybe he is earning his way back. I know it's just preseason but if there is any notion of the 3rd preseason game being the 'dress rehearsal' then i'd imagine the 1st and 2nd unit will closely resemble what the goal is for the depth chart.
