Burner's Burning Questions: The Fifty-Three Man Roster And Practice Squad, 2015

If that happens, and it is a big "if", then my guess is Bruce will make that announcement. And yes, no bias here. :)

There's no way we would ever make a coaching change mid-season. Snyder got killed for the way he handled Norv Turner's departure back in the day, and the media would carve him up like a Thanksgiving turkey for a mid-season firing.

I think a sub .500 season without significant improvement could put Gruden on the hot seat, but I think the team will handle that decision quietly and unemotionally.

Yes, but I still have this funny feeling.

Anyway, no updates. Very little to nothing happens after the last mini-camp and before training camp. We'll have updates starting in early August. TC starts next Thursday (July 30) at Bon Secours.

The Washington Redskins announced that they’ve placed RB Michael Hill on waivers Thursday in an email to season-ticket holders.Washington signed Hill to a contract back in March, but it appears as though they prefer to see what their other running backs offer in training camp and the preseason.

Hill, 25, originally signed on with the Chargers as an undrafted free agent out of Missouri Western State back in 2013. He has already played for a number of teams including the Packers, Buccaneers, Colts and Redskins over the past two years.

Hill did not appear in a single game last year.
Hard not to feel for a guy like that. He's been THIS CLOSE to the dream ... close enough to taste it ... but is probably coming to the realization he's going to have to join the real world sooner than later.

Burner’s Burning Questions – The Fifty-Three Man Roster And Practice Squad, 2015

We do have a small update for this week after all. The regular season will be here before you know it and training camp starts in just six days. Feel free to post your own predictions (post as many as you desire). Please keep any disagreements and debates clean and professional.

Rumors continue to circulate around Redskins Park about looking for a good TE (depth, part-time starter?) on the waiver wire in the coming weeks and a good outside linebacker (depth, special teams).

Possible Cuts, Cap Savings, Candidates For Restructure:
Perry Riley - $3.0 Million (Possible Restructure, Minor Extension Possible)
Shawn Lauvao - $3.0 Million (Possible Restructure)
Andre Roberts - $2.75 Million (Possible Release – But Not Likely)

Tight Ends:
Niles Paul - S
Jordan Reed (Candidate to be traded soon?)
Logan Paulsen

With the rumors swirling about the TE position, BBQ thinks it is possible that the Redskins will have a trade sometime soon. Niles Paul could be set for a monstrous season and various football pundits seem to suggest that he could be ahead of Reed and Paulsen on the depth chart.

We will continue to update the roster as players are signed, released, and given injury settlements. What differences do you see so far in this offseason? Will we sign any players that get released from other teams? Are there any free agents that interest you? Have a great weekend and stay cool out there. See you as we go along.

Hail To The Redskins!

This team was 4-12 last season. I recognize this as the first of what is likely to be a couple of rebuilding years under McCloughan.

We need to be aggressive and get our younger players on the field, they need to make mistakes NOW rather than 1-2 years from now when 'average' or 'just so' veterans are released or leave as free agents.

I loved the move to cut Chester. Is Spencer Long a 10 year answer at OG? Who knows, and we will never find out having him sit behind a 32 year old starter who grades out poorly to most NFL scouts.

At wide receiver, we have Jackson and Garcon as starters. But Andre Roberts seems to be a big bust. If he doesn't show early in camp, I would favor getting him off the roster to give Grant, Crowder, etc. more time in the slot.

You make mistakes, it happens.

But you need to move on and not brood over the mistake or try to cover it up.

Anyone remember Adam Archuleta playing as the 'up man' on punts after getting sacked as a starting safety?

It doesn't really save face to keep him around.

I like what Jimmy Johnson said about the first years in Dallas. They drafted a lot of guys and put them on the field together to grow and learn together. It wasn't pretty at first, but over time if you are confident you made the right picks, things will turn around.

I have the same feelings at cornerback.

Culliver is a given, but even if he makes it back at age 32 I would be in favor of keeping DeAngelo Hall as a backup/nickel guy and give Breeland/Amerson the chance to grow and improve from where they were last year. Admittedly, Amerson has further to go.................

In regards to Jordan Reed and the tight ends?

I can't understand why the Redskins have not signed a veteran tight end.

Reed can't be counted on to stay healthy.

Paul at 235 is too small to block anyone at the line of scrimmage.

Logan Paulsen has less athleticism than my 80 year old father. And somewhere along the line in 2014 forgot how to block

I pronounce Bulldog Twin as the UN-laziest person around.....the only guy willing to take the time to completely spell out McCloughan's name. :)
Besides me, of course.
But no point in tooting my own horn. I do that enough, don't I ?

I couldn't agree more on Andre Roberts. And i would also add Ryan Grant to the 'let's see what he can do' category. I think the team is taking the exact same approach with Jordan Reed as they are with Griffin - the potential upside is huge, but you can't wait for it to manifest itself consistently forever. I think that for both of them, this year is the 'show us' year - and the team could move on from both if they can't step up, stay on the field, and produce. I thought Paulsen over-achieved the first couple years in DC, but his play has declined since then. I don't know why he's still on the roster frankly. As to why they didn't bring in a vet TE - may be that they just didn't see anyone they felt was a good fit or a major upgrade. You can't address every need in a single off-season.

As for Crowder, is he officially, or at least unofficially, cleared ?
I havn't heard anything either way, and if nothing's been said, I suppose no news is good news. And if anything would have come out about that incident, it would have most likely come out by now ?

I think the team decided (likely with input from the NFL front office) that they were just going to pretend that tweet never happened. And unless there are charges from the ex-girlfriend (I assume she's an 'ex'), it'll never be publically discussed. Probably very smart PR, and horrible ethics, all at the same time :)

Jason Reid was killing Dashon Goldson this AM on the ESPN radio show.

This guy is a well known hater but he is going to start to look foolish if he continues his petty tirade as better players come here under the new GM.

He asked how we could acquire a player who Tampa Bay gave up on and have any confidence he can contribute?

It's actually quite simple. McCloughan doesn't trust the front office of the Bucs to make good football decisions. They have signed a number of free agents over the past 3-4 years and seemingly ALL of them have blown up down there.

The coaching staff under Lovie Smith meanwhile put Goldson in a defensive scheme that didn't match his skill set very well.

So, for an exchange of picks and assuming some cash portion of the contract, the Redskins get a veteran Scot has previous experience scouting and then drafting.

Doesn't seem like too much given up for a player that was in the pro bowl a short time ago in San Francisco and hasn't had any major injuries in the time since.

He certainly has more promise coming in here than seeing Brandon Meriweather treading water or Ryan Clark mentally retiring while he still had a jersey on last season.

I don't know if Goldson is a good player or will work out. But I'm pretty confident Jason Reid doesn't know a GD thing about football.

Article put together the most intriguing NFL rookies to watch this year.
Some may be surprised to see which Redskin draftee made the list.

Jamison Crowder, WR, Washington Redskins

The selection of Crowder didn't raise a lot of eyebrows amongst fans, but that's because there aren't many people outside of the Duke faithful who got to see him consistently. But the 2015 wide receiver class has a chance to be similar to last season's group, and produce some middle-round guys who look like steals. Crowder will have the chance to be one of those. He has some explosive playmaking ability and he is tough, which should translate well into the slot early on. He can also contribute right away in the return game, and that could translate into an expanding role in the mold of Pittsburgh's Markus Wheaton in 2014.

It's based only on speculation and some chatter amongst the talking heads out there.

Running Backs, Fullback:
Alfred Morris - S
Matt Jones
Trey Williams

If this Trey Williams guy makes the team, I'm curious how they do his name on his jersey.
Both him and Trent play offense, and their names are almost totally identical.
They would have to spell out Trey's entire first and last name. Anything shorter than that, would be an exact match with Trent.
But it's hard to imagine having enough room on the jersey for that.
Then again, if there's enough room for that old Bengal receiver named Housh-whatever the rest is, then there's probably enough space for Trey Williams.

As far as interior OL guys; at least one needs to be able to play Center as a backup.
Any ideas who might have an edge?

I know they have been trying all of them but could be a deciding factor when the last cut day rolls in.
