The Redskins defense baffles me. Has for some years going back to 2010 when we tried to make our DEs into OLBs to run the 3-4.
The 3-4 has never been firmly established here.
We have never invested in a quality NT/DT to anchor the line.
We go into free agency to pick up receivers and corners but not any pass rushers.
Our inside linebackers are smallish for the 3-4.
Think of Ray Lewis at 252 or Timmons last night at 260 plus for the Steelers.
We go light with guys like Perry Riley (240), Compton (238), etc.
All of this results in a defense that doesn't seem to have an identity.
The Redskins would be better off in a 4-3 with Kerrigan and Smith at DE and Baker and Hood inside at DT.
The Redskins have to get over this false paradigm that the team has to run a 3-4 to get pressure.
We won SBs with the 4-3. The Giants won 2 SBs recently with a base 4-3.
The decision to go to a 3-4 was based on philosophy not the talent on hand.
And it has continued that way.
Smith at 270 and Kerrigan at 264 are big enough and quick enough to be active DEs in the 4-3.
Foster at 250 playing the mike to go with Baker and Hood would seem to give the club a start in stopping the inside rush.
Baker is the line's best player and at 325 with good quickness could be very effective.
He has too much athleticism for a man his size to play NT and strictly take on blockers.
He could penetrate and be a force inside.
Joe Barry seems just as clueless as Jim Haslett was.
Continue to run the same system despite not ever getting the anticipated results.
Another thing I noticed last night is virtually no impact from our 2016 draftees.
Doctson has been hurt, Cravens has yet to really learn the position they envision him playing, Fuller was inactive, Sudfeld was inactive, and Daniels/Marshall are on IR.
Not exactly like last year when Scherff, Smith, Crowder, Jarrett, etc were on the field and contributing early.
