Oh yeah, I know we can - Just wondering if that might the thought of not filling that last spot because of possibly grabbing someone new to the fold versus a player that had been in Redskins. camp.

Burner’s Burning Questions - The Official Fifty-Three Man Roster And Practice Squad, 2016​

The Redskins have completed the offseason and preseason. The roster has been narrowed to fifty-three players and ten practice squad members. The team has also posted injury designations. The roster will continue to be adjusted throughout the season. Today we provide you a current list as a frame of reference – feel free to use it this season as a source of roster information.

In a few days BBQ will post the annual predictions for each regular season game. We were a bit harsh last year, but let’s see if we can be more accurate this time.

Wow, 11 DB's is crazy.
And only 1 backup Tackle.
I hope the 2 OT's on the PS are able to step up, if need be, and do a better job than Cofield would have done.
I guess if both OT's go down in the same game, Scherff moves over as emergency 4th Tackle.
 
Louis Nix (DT) bombed out with Houston and New York Giants after being a third round pick.

Seems NYG needed depth at DL, enough to make them go out and sign Damon Harrison to a rich free agent contract.

I wonder what Nix has in the tank to offer us.
 
Nix the possible backup for Golston at the moment? I imagine that's gonna be a long-term search.
Like the guys they brought back on PS from camp.

I doubt he'd help much being out for so long but any idea on if/when Redd's suspension is up?
 
To me it's amazing that 6 plus years into running a 3-4 base defense, we still have not been able to find a Nose Tackle to man the position across THREE administrations.

We have tried free agents, low round picks and undrafted free agents. But we have not tried drafting one in Rounds 1-2.

I think that needs to change in 2017.
 
Face it, our base defense is nickel. We are gathering players in that line of reasoning. That's why a NT is not given such high importance; they are thinking pass rush.

Hell, they've been saying for years we don't do that much 3-4, and the numbers play out that truth. We definitely need more quality D Line, but I don't think a true NT is high at all on the list.

Falls into the line of reasoning of drafting Matt. He's not an NT so maybe more of a plan to try it (see Trent Murphy) and if it's not working out keep him as an interior DL in the gap and not on point.

I could be totally wrong, but to me, this kind of feels like the beginning of a new unique defensive scheme overall. Maybe something no team has done yet. This whole hybrid db usage is intriguing and scary at the same time to me as well.
 
It appears that Ziggy Hood is now our starter at NT. That report is circulating this morning.
 
It's amazing that Hood could be released in February and by August/Sept be our second best DL behind Baker.

Just shows how little time and attention has been spent on the DL.

Taking one DE/DT with a #5 pick isn't enough to supplement the talent on this unit. And Ioannidis didn't even make the 53 man roster.
 
I imagine that lineup will be Baker, Hood and Francois by week 3. I think Francois will have a big year.
 
It's going to be all about scheme. We already know the team is going to be in "base 3-4" only occasionally---what was it last year, around 30% of all snaps? Seems pretty clear to me we're going to predominantly be relying on multiple fronts, with multiple safety, LB and DB combinations, both in running and passing situations.

I guess one can look at what we did or didn't do on the DL this year in at least a couple of ways ... one, maybe they didn't know what they were doing and screwed the pooch ... or two, maybe the message in the tea leaves is that traditional NT in particular, and the DL in general, is not the focus of the defense they're trying to build to combat the new passing NFL.

Or, maybe it's something else entirely. :)
 
That's fine if we are talking about facing passing offenses.

The trouble is in the NFC you are looking at Dallas, Minnesota, Seattle, and Carolina as teams that can really run the football, whether that is strictly a tailback or a combination of running backs and a quarterback that is also capable of rushing for significant yardage.

At some point the Redskins are going to need to 'man up' on the DL and beat their opposite numbers one on one.

It's in those situations I am not sure we have fixed our 'leaky' defense.

I could see Elliott running for 125-130 yards against this defense, I could see Cam Newton make some very big plays with his feet in an otherwise close game.

We don't have that dominant player in the front seven and appear to be more a 'finesse' defense than a physical defense.
 
Could be, BD. On the other hand, maybe rather than try to answer opposing running games with beef, they're planning to attack it with speed and numbers and filling lanes ... with guys who can also defend the pass ... allowing the D to not have to try to make wholesale changes against modern up-tempo offenses designed to preclude it.

Just sayin'. Maybe there's another way to look at the offseason approach to the DL than simply deciding they ****ed it up.

Guess we'll find out.
