Free Agency, The Mock Drafts, 2017(Continual Updates)
Greetings from BBQ to all in BGO land.
Today we bring you the latest mock as we get closer to the draft of 2017. The big event occurs next Thursday and the roster will be full of new prospects before you know it.
Next week we will have mocks on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. On Thursday BBQ will bring you a list of first round possibilities. For Friday, we will do the same for rounds two and three. Saturday features players who could be targets in rounds four through seven. We will not be featuring mocks that have a trade involving Kirk Cousins – only if and when that actually happens.
Feel free to offer your own ideas about the draft, free agency, team cuts, team additions, coaching changes and anything else related to these subjects. Too, we’d love to see your mocks if you are so inclined.
An extra note that we will continually post throughout the mocking process: These mocks may not necessarily be what BBQ wants or what the members at BGO may prefer. These mocks are designed to try and get into the mind of the Redskins brain trust and see what they will do. It’s not an easy task, but we’ll try to do our best.
Without any further delays, let’s take a look at the latest mock for 2017.

Round One: Trade
The Redskins trade down in round one to the very latter stages and pick up a second and fourth rounder.
Round One: Derek Barnett, OLB/DE, Tennessee
With Trent Murphy being sidelined the first four games of the season and injury concerns centering on Junior Galette, the Redskins take the talented prospect from the Volunteers. When factoring in the sophomore slump of Preston Smith, the team can take no chances. The SEC standout is a bona fide sack machine and is also very effective in a rushing defense. He can also play with his hand in the dirt when 4-3 packages are utilized – a scheme favored by the Redskins. Able to leverage his body effectively against offensive linemen. Decent speed off the edge. Very disruptive.

Round Two: Chris Wormley, DE/DT, Michigan
The Redskins waste no time in repairing the defensive line and grab the All-Big Ten defensive lineman. The commitment to the line is real and genuine. Wormley is tenacious and very consistent – rarely makes mistakes. Extremely intelligent. He is a 3-Tech who will probably line up on the outside on most plays, but will kick to the inside at times. Very disruptive in the running game and gets occasional pressure on the quarterback. Probably needs to add about ten pounds of bulk and muscle. A dedicated team player for the Wolverines.

Round Two: Kevin King, CB, Washington
The first thing that stands out is Kevin King’s lack of gaudy numbers, but don’t let that fool you. He played opposite from Sidney Jones and the PAC 12 shutdown corner usually was placed against the bigger receivers. As a bigger corner this Husky could help to neutralize the bigger wide receivers of the NFC-East and the NFL. He has good speed. Fierce defender. Can defend jump balls effectively. Could be a starter from day one, certainly no later than after a few games.
Round Three: Cooper Kupp. WR, Eastern Washington
While many pundits and fans think the Redskins are set a wide receiver, nothing could be further from the truth. They could lose two key receivers next offseason (Terrelle Pryor, Brian Quick) and taking one here makes sense. Even if both players are re-signed, this still makes a lot of sense. Besides, having plenty of good receivers in Jay Gruden’s pass happy offense is not a bad thing. The knock on Kupp is that he is slow, but proved the naysayers wrong with solid 40 times over the last couple of months. Very dependable receiver. Excellent route runner. Rarely makes mistakes.

Round Four: Jake Butt, TE, Michigan
The Redskins can’t ignore six concussions to Jordan Reed and he could be one hit away from a career ending injury. Vernon Davis is not a starter and Niles Paul is more of a special teams ace. Enter Jake Butt of the BIG 10’s Wolverines. He was originally rated as one of the draft’s best tight ends, but an unfortunate injury in their bowl game likely means that he won’t be selected early on. He also may not be ready at the very start of the season. However, Butt could still have a solid rookie season. Dependable pass catcher. Great red zone target. Excellent football smarts. Good blocker.

Round Four: Isaac Asiata, G, Utah
This very strong and powerfully built guard could be a target for the Redskins. Asiata has played tackle and center, but mostly out of necessity due to injuries along the Utes offensive line. The PAC 12 lineman has the prototypical size to play inside and left guard is his natural position. Excellent in the rushing offense, but will need some work in the pass protection schemes. This four year starter could crack the starting lineup by mid-season, maybe sooner.
Round Four: Dalvin Tomlinson, DT/DE, Alabama
The Redskins continue to rebuild their defensive line and look to the Crimson Tide – that perennial powerhouse of the SEC. They produce a lot of talent and Dalvin Tomlinson is another one of their prospects. His specialty is run stuffing, but he became a better pass rusher later in the 2016 season. He won’t get a lot of sacks, but will bat plenty of passes down. Solid player who gladly puts team goals ahead of his own. Very intelligent. Needs to develop a little bit more of a mean streak attitude.
Round Five: Jarron Jones, DE/DT, Notre Dame
The Redskins are massively overhauling the defensive line and are taking no prisoners. Jones is a productive force at defensive tackle and end. He has superb athleticism for a man his size and figures to play more at the end, but could slide inside at times. Jones has the potential to dominate offensive linemen when he is in a groove and can live in the backfield. The ACC (Affiliated) standout uses his length to block passes and possesses a respectable pass rush. He can disappear at times during a game, but Jim Tomsula will likely provide good coaching and motivation.

Round Six: Josh Tupou, DT, Colorado
There are some humongous, towering, massive mountains in Colorado – Telluride, Pikes Peak, Mount Elbert, Crestone Peak, Josh Tupou. He’s big! He eats only one meal a day – it last about eight hours. Ok, enough of the lame one liners. Let’s get to the obvious – Very strong. Plays with a passion. Good at the point of attack. Handles double teams with ease. A major cog in the middle. Excels in the rushing defense. Provides a decent pass rush. Can play in both a 3-4 and a 4-3 defense. At 6-3 and 355, the PAC 12 standout can actually run a 5.3 forty. A true Buffalo indeed.

Round Six: Jay Guillermo, G/C, Clemson
Jay Guillermo is versatile and can play either guard or center. That’s a good reason for the Redskins to take a flyer on him. Also, there is a need to have a backup at center. He would be drafted for depth purposes, but could actually be a starter within a year or two. The ACC lineman has the massive size that is favored in the NFL for inside positions on the offensive line. Good pass protector, but would need to work on the running game.
Round Seven: David Jones, FS, Richmond
David Jones is a really special athlete. He was selected the preseason defensive player of the year in the CAA, but an early season injury derailed part of his senior season. He returned a few weeks later and was still able to capture second team All-American honors. Last summer, Jones was projected as a second or third rounder and considered to be one of the top five free safeties available in the 2017 draft. If the Redskins are looking for a major steal, Jones would fit that profile. Decent speed. A special teams standout. Goes 6-3, 215. Plays the middle of the field like a boss. Wins/bats away “jump” balls consistently. Excellent attitude. Diligent student of the game. Graduated early (December).

Round Seven: Hardy Nickerson, ILB, Illinois
Yes, he is the son of NFL great Hardy Nickerson. He was able to coach his son at Illinois last season and has turned his offspring into a fine player. The younger Nickerson was a superb tackler for the Illini of the Big Ten. Transferred from California a couple of seasons ago and was very productive for his three seasons in a Golden Bears uniform. Can put pressure on the opposing quarterback. Would provide superb depth. Often tackles running backs for a loss. Can step back into coverage against tight ends and slot receivers. He can provide the occasional interception. Decent speed. Would be a very good special teams player.
