The contract extension for Gruden came out of nowhere, and noone had a sniff of it, beforehand.
So, how much more, would one expect the team to be tight-lipped about trading Cousins.
Unless the leak came out of SF.
Another reason I don't see the Skins doing it, is they seem to be finally going in the direction of continuity :
the promotions of Cavanaugh and Manusky, and the extension of Gruden, etc.
and then the trading of Cousins goes against continuity in the worst kind of way.

I still believe that Gruden thinks his "system" is so easy to understand, and run, that anybody not named RGIII could do it. Like most coaches that are married, and faithful to their "system" I don't think he's overly worried about it. It is quarterback friendly, as brother McD has said on more than one occasion. I think the biggest concern would be Colt's durability. And that's legit. And, if both Garcon and Jackson are gone, even #8 would struggle.

Maybe the thinking is, let's grow a group of young guys, Sud's/draft pick, Doctson, Crowder, draft pick, for another year or two, and save a shit ton of money with Colt in the meantime. It may not be the preferred route for many, but it's not bat-shit crazy either.

I have to agree with you, Ax.

It would be tough having to accept taking a step back after two consecutive winning seasons.

That being said, with or without Kirk Cousins, I don't think that in the next 2 year window we are going to supplant the likes of the Cowboys, Falcons, Seahawks, Packers, etc., within the conference. When you consider some of the teams we are slated to play in 2017, several of them are the types of physical teams that have continuously given us fits as well. That's not to say to throw in the towel, but 2017 on the surface appears to be the type of season that could potentially be an uphill climb for this team.

In some regards, our progress was a mirage that last couple years, and franchises have to be careful not to fool themselves into thinking they are better than what they really are. 17 wins was good enough to appease a starving fan base of Redskins fans. On the other hand, that core group of roster players with the likes of guys like Baker, Jackson and Garcon approaching their 30s are not going to take you to the promised land.

When we play the top teams and the more physical teams around the league, we've continuously been pushed around.

It's time to build towards becoming the bully that other teams fear.

I've never gotten the sense that even with Cousins behind center that we have struck fear in the opposition (and that is not meant to discount anything he's accomplished here).
 
Henry nailed it a week ago (or whenever). We don't run the ball well. At all. Our Defense was terrible last year. We do one thing well - the passing game.

So we're going to set fire to that? How the hell does that make sense?

I don't think Gruden likes to run the ball, so I'm not sure trying to beef up the rushing attack makes a lot of sense, which is why I've never bought for half a second the Adrian Peterson rumors. We've spent some high draft picks on the offense and not enough on the D. I was figuring that would change this year, and if our D makes the rather large jump to just mediocre instead of Godawful, we make the playoffs.

If we lose Cousins, Garcon and DJax, we're back to Spurrier and Zorn, where having a good QB isn't important. Remember when Chip Kelly came in and was going to revolutionize the QB position with his genius system? People were talking seriously about him drafting QBs in the 4-7 rounds every year and trotting them out because they were disposible in his system.

How'd that work out?

Pay Kirk and call it a day. Provide yourself with an out like Dalton's deal and go to work on the Defense. Or, tear down the one thing we have been good at the last couple of years in order to save money and prove that the QB position is irrelevent in Gruden's scheme.

I don't believe going to a veteran QB, that already knows the system well, would be setting fire to what we currently do best. Sure it would be a step back, initially. but who knows?

More importantly, if Pierre and Deshaun are both gone, the passing game is likely to suffer mightily, even if #8 is under center. Having to put up with a regressing offense would be easier to accept if our QB is only making $3mil, vs $25mil+

McCoy isn't going to be a step back, it's going to be half a city block back. Dude is a nice second stringer, but it won't take long for the league to figure him out (again) and devise D's to stop him. How is that NOT burning it to the ground?

There's a reason everyone says QB is the most important position on the field.
 
You're convinced Colt would be "half a city block" step back. I am not.

I believe it would be a step back, initially. And as I said, if both Garcon and Jackson are gone, the offense takes a step back, regardless of who's under center.

If the reported deal goes down soon, (trade to 9er's) Gruden will have plenty of time to groom the offense to Colt.
Colt, and an improved defense can match last season's lack of a postseason appearance, at worst.
 
I think the only way to keep from slinking back to our usual position of sucking hind teet in the NFCE would be to keep the offense as currently manned, minus perhaps only Garçon or Jackson, improve the run game, and add some real talent to the defense. But the team cannot afford to do it.

If Cousins were special we would have a chance and it wouldn't be such a gamble. However, he is not special, he is merely the beneficiary of outstanding timing and circumstance.
 
Also reported Allen and Schaffer have been speaking to reps during tampering period
 
NFL Rumors says we tendered both Thompson, and Compton.

Newest reports suggest that we're fully preparing for Kirk's departure and that he wants out. As far as I'm concerned, let him and garcon play out their careers in SF. Grass isn't always greener. Alone, our FAs this offseason weren't going to bring home Lombardi's, but they certainly could have been key parts of a greater puzzle. We keep hearing how guys can't run fast enough to get out of Washington because of the supposed disarray. At some point though, doesn't some of it fall on players' shoulders to want to stick around to build something special? I never got a sense that any of these guys were interested in building off the 17 wins the past two years. Garcon and Jackson are strictly chasing money and Kirk might have a bit of fear that he can't shoulder the load without them.

Call me old school, but long term, I feel that building through your defense, o line and running game allows for the greater likelihood of sustained success.

We've actually exhibited caution and discretion when it came to mccloughan's supposed power and cousins, and have been lambasted for it regardless. However we proceeded with cousins, people would have thought we were out of our minds. It was a can't win situation from the start, mainly due to the fact that he played well overall for a season and a half, but not spectacular. At the end of the day, my hope is that we have conviction in a plan and ignore outside noise.
 
Have any of the reports come from any of the interested parties? Not that I'm for negotiating through the media, but unless one side or the other says something indicating the impending result, I'll wait.

The offseason jalopy is laboring along and free agency is just hours away. The combine came to a close on Monday and later this month we will have the first mock of March as we countdown to the draft. After free agency simmers down, the mocks will increase in frequency until the very moment we reach the first round.

We will look at our own free agents including those who are re-signed, released, and those who may not return. We will list candidates to be released and the cap savings/hit. We’ll provide updates as needed.

The cap for 2017 is $167M, $1M lower than expected. After the tag that was placed on Kirk Cousins, the Redskins have about $29M in cap space.

With the hiring of Torrian Gray as the new DB coach (via Florida and Virginia Tech), look for a substantially huge improvement from the corners and safeties. Many of his former players are in the league and several are expected to be drafted (some highly) in 2017.

BBQ did not plan to dwell or speculate on the Scot McCloughan situation other than to say that the structure in place is likely the same and he is truly handling a family matter. However, the mounting reports suggest that he will be let go just after the draft. BBQ now believes this is the case.

It is possible that Chris Baker signs elsewhere.

It is possible that the Redskins could make a run at Eagles DT/DE Bennie Logan and Rams WR Kenny Britt in free agency.

Expect Morgan Moses to get a contract extension in the offseason.

There continues to be a growing chorus of insiders and pundits who think Bashaud Breeland could be moving to free safety.

It’s possible that Spencer Long will receive a contract extension this offseason.

Is DeSean Jackson returning? There are a few whispers out there, but it is still unlikely.

Personal Thoughts:
With the retirement of Kory Lichtensteiger, my likely to be released list has narrowed to DeAngelo Hall.

Could Cowboys DT Terrell McClain be a target in FA? It sounds like it.

If the team releases DeAngelo Hall, BBQ wouldn’t mind seeing him in a front office role.

BBQ has never said that Kirk Cousins is a candidate to be traded. This is why the mocks have never included a trade. It is still our belief that a long term deal will be reached in the coming months. Anything can change, but BBQ has never wavered on this school of thought. And nothing has changed that view in the last two days.

4 years, $32.5 million? I think if we'd offered that, Redskins Nation would have blown whatever gasket it has left.

Is 8 million per year that much considering what Garçon got? And we don't know what Jackson is getting from TB, but Scheffter said it was a "big deal". I'd be curious to know the market on WR this year. This deal for Britt could seem like a steal for the Browns.

Browns may have a lot of cap space, but normally a player also has to consider about going where you have a chance to win.

Years ago aging vets came here to get that big payday before leaving the game.

This is first time really down about the team as a whole. The team is doing anything to give the fans confidence in (or if) their plan for free agency. They have been a PR disaster.
