Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, The Mock Drafts, 2016 (Continual Updates)

It would seem to me, that if we're gonna lock Kirk up, either for one year, or several, replacing his starting WR's would work against Kirk's continued success.

I would restructure Garcon & Jackson, if they're willing, or just live with next years cost to keep them. With our imitation of an NFL running game, the last thing we should do is rattle Kirk by taking away his familiarity with the WR corp.

This year's FA class seems to be a lot more quiet than in recent years. It's missing the big names like a Suh.

Von Miller's contract is up, but there's no way on earth that Denver will let him even accept a phone call from another team.

I'd love Lamar Miller, but so will five other teams. I fear a team like Dallas will race to overpay him.

Good work BB, thanks for the update.

It's only quiet because FA doesn't begin until March 9. Of course, some players could be released starting on Monday and we could see some activity next week, but not too much.

Some talk about Trent Murphy beefing a few pounds to play DE. I like the idea of him adding the weight but not so much with him lining up as a DE. How about bulking up and playing ILB? Skins run stopping at the second level was non-existent last year.

I don't think the draft is really that deep for a DE/DL (well, you know, that's my opinion, obviously) that fits the Redskins needs. But I would bet the farm that Scot's book is deep there, like every other position and best available players. It'll be very interesting to see who falls to them in the first round and what transpires from there. Like Reggie Ragland; it's not too unrealistic that he might fall that far in the first. Not out of the realm of possibility that Reed (if he's their guy) falls to them in the second either.

Do you think Trent Murphy has the speed to play that position? I don't. We cannot have him next to Will Compton, teams will absolutely exploit that with TE's and RB's out of the backfield, Compton is smart enough to get himself in position to make up for his lack of speed, but Murphy does not seem to have it and 2 slow ILBs won't cut it. Compton needs a speedy guy next to him who can cover field. I really wish we'd give up on the 3-4 altogether if we're not going to get the right coach in here to coach it. Compton would make a damn good MLB in a 4-3.

So much for my dream of Noah Spence dropping to us. Von Miller probably moved Noah Spence near the top ten now.

If Trent is playing ILB in a 3-4 he has help for pass coverage and he doesn't need to cover as much ground. If he can boost the run defense I'm OK with the trade-off. I certainly don't want to see him on the DLine in a 3-4. I also like the idea of going back to a 4-3 but that is easier said than done with the guys the have now. Probably take a couple of years to do it.

BB, I think you may have nailed our first rounder again.

I saw two other very good analysts project Robinson as our pick yesterday.

From what I've seen of him, he doesn't generate much of a pass rush, but he definitely clogs up the running lanes. He also seems to have a bit of a mean streak too. Not as pronounced as Scherff's, but still visible.

Robinson would be awesome, but he'll likely be gone long before we pick.
He's mostly projected in the early teens.

That was definitely the case several weeks ago, and I'm sure things will change five more times with the draft so far away.

But the ones I saw yesterday both had him going to us. And not just random people. Good analysts.

BB = Money.

Here are some of the free agents that could be targeted. Obviously, the Redskins can’t sign each player, but having what looks to be substantial cap room will allow for some flexibility. Who do you like in this list and who would you avoid?

Possible Free Agent Targets:
Quarterbacks:
Chase Daniel, Kansas City

Running Backs:
Lamar Miller, Miami
Ronnie Hillman, Denver

Wide Receivers:
Marvin Jones, Cincinnati

Tight Ends:

Offensive Tackles:

Guards:
Kelechi Osemele, Baltimore
Michael Harris, Minnesota
Jeff Allen, Kansas City

Centers:
Stefen Wisniewski, Jacksonville

Defensive Tackles:
Ian Williams, San Francisco

Defensive End:
Malik Jackson, Denver
Jaye Howard, Kansas City

Linebackers:

Cornerbacks:
Brandon Boykin, Pittsburgh

Safeties:
George Iloka, Cincinnati
Rodney McLeod, Los Angeles
Isa Abdul-Quddus, Detroit

Teams With Serious Cap Issues:
Miami
New Orleans
Buffalo
New York Jets
Pittsburgh
New England
Baltimore
Detroit

Teams With Enormous Cap Room:
Jacksonville
Oakland
San Francisco
Chicago
Tampa Bay

Teams with serious cap issues could help the Redskins if they have their eyes on a certain player or players. However, teams with plenty of cap room could snipe a Redskins player.

Several changes have been made for this week and are reflected in the listings.

In talking with several Redskins beat reporters recently, BBQ has learned the following: After more discussions, Pierre Garcon and DeSean Jackson are likely staying, but recognize that they are in the last year of their contracts. Look for wide receiver to be a priority in the draft and possibly free agency. The odds are 50-50 for Dashon Goldson being released (with no cap hit) – a lot will depend on if he restructures. Alfred Morris will be allowed to explore his options, but could actually return on a vet minimum contract.

The ship has sailed on Josh LeRibeus. There is a 99.99% chance that he will not return. Perry Riley is another player who likely will not return and be released. Shawn Lauvao may never return to form with his various leg injuries, but there is optimism at Redskins Park. The Chris Culliver situation is interesting and BBQ thinks there will be a restructure in his immediate future or be released. We have made changes to the statuses of Pierre Garcon, DeSean Jackson, Deangelo Hall, Jason Hatcher, and added Adam Hayward. Other players above have their situations mentioned, but no other insight is known at this time

We have decided to include very good football players on the free agent list from other teams only. It is almost impossible to know who of the “lesser” players could be targeted, so no attempts will be made unless media chatter dictates otherwise. We've also narrowed down the list of targeted receivers, cornerbacks, defensive tackles, and linebackers (eliminated possibilities). Obviously the Redskins can’t sign each player, but we think that two very good free agents could be on the table.

We’ll update the free agency situations frequently and as media chatter warrants. The mock drafts for 2016 will be sparsely periodic until mid March and we will have the second mock later this week. Give us your thoughts on free agency and what you think will happen.

Hail To The Redskins!

NFC East rookie grades: Redskins' class rich with impact players
Combine focus: The Redskins, who hold the 21st overall pick, desperately need to find a young, athletic cover corner to upgrade the secondary on the perimeter. Thus, the team's brass will spend a lot of time investigating Ohio State's Eli Apple, Virginia Tech's Kendall Fuller and Clemson's Mackensie Alexander to see if they can handle the CB1 role. The Redskins also need a playmaking safety to serve as an apprentice under veteran DeAngelo Hall. Boise State's Darian Thompson, West Virginia's Karl Joseph and Southern Utah's Miles Killebrew will draw interest as potential rovers in the back end.

Free Agency, The Mock Drafts, 2016 (Continual Updates)

The Super Bowl is behind us and the offseason has officially begun. As the old saying goes, defense wins championships. With that in mind, here is the second BBQ Redskins mock for 2016 and it features a trade. After free agency settles down, we will have mocks that focus on no trades, trades, and are BGO member centric. We’ll even feature two or three mocks that are extraordinary. Scot McCloughan has said he would like to get fifteen picks if at all possible. BBQ thinks that is unrealistic, but we will delve into the unusual for the fun of it. Free agency could determine what happens in the draft and we’ll focus more on that in the coming weeks. BBQ will have a couple of mocks before March 9 (the official opening of FA), but the frequency will pick up shortly thereafter.

Feel free to offer your own ideas about the draft, free agency, team cuts, and anything else related to these subjects. Too, we’d like to see your mocks if you are so inclined.

Without any further delays, let’s take a look at the second mock for 2016.

Round One: Trade
The Rams broker a trade with the Redskins and move both of their second rounders and a sixth to the Redskins for the opportunity to select twenty-first overall.

Round Two: Will Fuller, WR, Notre Dame
Unquestionably, the absolute best deep threat receiver in the 2016 draft. With blazing speed, Fuller has been able to easily get separation from defenders for the ACC-related program. Numbers are a bit down from the previous season, but that is due to below average quarterback play. Can stretch the field consistently for other receivers and tight ends.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yTZUMsRdfTQ
Other Possible Targets:
Kendall Fuller, CB, Virginia Tech
Tyler Boyd, WR, Pittsburgh
Sebastian Tretola, G, Arkansas
Ryan Kelly, C, Alabama
Adolphus Washington, DT, Ohio St.
Spencer Drango, OT/G, Baylor
Jeremy Cash, SS, Duke

Round Two: Sheldon Rankins, DT/DE, Louisville
Rankins is a deceptively quick and agile defensive tackle. He can play outside or inside on a 3-4 defense. Can outrun most offensive linemen in the NFL. Very teachable. An impressive three-tech who stuffs the run, but chases quarterbacks at will. The All-ACC player figures to drop a bit in the draft due to his size (6-2, 310), but that unfair knock on him has been there since his freshman season. He has simply defied the odds with a positive attitude and “overachieving”.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6HuWlLvCL6o

Round Two: Vernon Butler, DT/DE, Louisiana Tech
Scot McCloughan wastes no time in rebuilding the defensive line. Simply put, Butler is strong and able to do the following: bull rush, hold the offensive lineman from making plays, sack the quarterback, generate a consistent pass rush, and contain running backs – often for a loss. The CUSA product’s motor is constantly running and does not stop. A wonderful character person and his focus is always in the right place.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ltL6872vGzs

Round Three: William Jackson, CB, Houston
Here is a little secret. BBQ believes that Jackson could be the best corner prospect in this draft and would be a huge steal for the Redskins. If the AAC standout starts to move up according to the pundits, he could receive a second round grade. Any higher? Not sure. Jackson has the overwhelming size that more teams covet. Very physical, but needs to be aware of personal foul penalties at the next level. Breaks quicker on the ball than any other corner that BBQ has seen in the last three drafts. Excellent closing speed. Totally frustrates quarterbacks and receivers alike.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ed52KLps6U
Other Possible Targets:
Chris Jones, DE, Mississippi St.
Kenneth Dixon, RB, Louisiana Tech
Sean Davis, FS, Maryland
Shawn Oakman, DE, Baylor
Nick Martin, C, Notre Dame
Jordan Howard, RB, Indiana

Round Four: Denver Kirkland, G, Arkansas
Arkansas is known for having quality offensive lines over the years and Denver Kirkland is the latest product from that system. He has a very nasty disposition in the mold of a Russ Grimm and a Brandon Scherff. A bit underrated, Kirkland would be a very good fit at left guard – the side with which he is most familiar. More than held his own against quality SEC competition. Recent tapes of his performances have been inexplicably dropped from the internet, but we hope they will resurface again soon.
Other Possible Targets:
Jack Allen, C, Michigan St.
Hassan Ridgeway, DT, Texas
Karl Joseph, SS, West Virginia
Aaron Burbridge, WR, Michigan St.
Miles Killebrew, SS, Southern Utah
Charles Tapper, DE, Oklahoma
Deiondre Hall, CB, Northern Iowa

Round Five: Jayron Kearse, SS, Clemson
For several years now a few teams have wanted taller and faster safeties on their rosters. The All-ACC performer certainly fits that prototype (6-5, 220), but comes with more than just being supersized as a strike safety. Covers running backs and tight ends like a very tight fitting glove. Has a physical streak to him. Kearse, who has NFL bloodlines (Jevon Kearse is his uncle and Phillip Buchanon is a cousin), can also cover bigger receivers with relative ease. Has good timing on jumping routes, but can overplay on occasion.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Coce42VjWNM
Other Possible Targets:
Blake Martinez, ILB, Stanford
Tajae Sharpe, WR, Massachusetts
Graham Glasgow, C/G, Michigan
Jonathan Williams, RB, Arkansas
Josh Ferguson, RB, Illinois
Jihad Ward, DE, Illinois

Round Six: Matt Ioannidis, DE, Temple
Ioannidis had a special season for the Owls, but he is a bit overlooked due to playing for a perennial doormat of the AAC. Not this past year – Temple had a great season and Matt Ioannidis was a big factor in that success. He has excellent size to go with a great attitude and possesses a tenacious motor. The first team all-conference standout added about twenty pounds of bulk and muscle in recent weeks. He can slide inside for certain defensive formations. Ioannidis could quickly be a rotational player and possibly a starter within a year or two.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUY9y8vCW-w
Other Possible Targets:
Kevin Hogan, QB, Stanford
Kyler Fackrell, OLB, Utah St.
Jared Norris, ILB, Utah
Elijah Shumate, SS, Notre Dame
Devon Cajuste, WR, Stanford
Maurice Canady, CB, Virginia

Round Six: Jared Norris, ILB, Utah
Norris has been a good linebacker for the Utes during his career in the PAC-12. He has good skills in the running game, but needs to work a bit on his pass defense. A true tackling machine that doesn’t get as much attention as his counterparts at more notable conference schools. A true team leader. Has the intangibles to be a good special teams player.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cOZDA2Tvq98

Round Seven: Jacoby Brissett, QB, N.C. State
Brissett put up good numbers for the Wolfpack, but is seen as a late round prospect. His journey has been an interesting story as he started out playing backup to another quarterback in this year’s draft, Jeff Driskel of Louisiana Tech. Both began their careers at Florida. After his transfer, the ACC product produced at a high level. However, he is seen as a third teamer or practice squad member his first year or two. He could become a very good career backup down the road.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_IMiZiFpKE
Other Possible Targets:
Nate Sudfeld, QB, Indiana
Joe Thuney, G, N.C. St.
Terrance Smith, ILB, Florida St.
Antwaun Woods, DT, Southern Cal
Travis Wilson, QB, Utah
Curt Maggitt, OLB, Tennessee

Round Seven: Keenan Reynolds, RB, Navy
Mr. All Everything at Navy. One of the best football players ever to come out of the famed service academy. A truly electrifying presence on the field. Although he played quarterback, his pro career figures to be running back. Reynolds could obviously be the emergency QB on days when he is part of the roster. Holds numerous school records. The reigning AAC Player of The Year holds many conference records. Holds several NCAA records. An outstanding young man who exemplifies leadership. Could the Redskins pull enough strings to get him stationed in the DC region for his two year Navy commitment? Definitely.

I used the wrong template this morning and just noticed it a short time ago.

Correction made to add the extra sixth rounder and another mistake rectified.
