I am by no stretch of the imagination a draft expert, but I was surprised to see both Joseph and Neal gone before we picked. Interestingly the Alabama gang wasn't selected in first round.

I will be curious how the trickle down of talent will impact us tonight. There has to be someone there we didn't expect.

I do believe I saw Goodell telling Wentz and Goff not to deflate any balls.

I do have one draft question. Has the 49ers become the new Raiders?

Playing on the insecurities of the Texans who were paranoid someone was going to take Fuller and then called the sixth round pick 'not much' to give up.

That's why the Texans have not been a good franchise for the most part of their short history.

Ditto with Vinny years ago. Remember the ridiculous trade up to draft Rocky McIntosh in the second round in 2006?

The guy came into the league with a bum knee and nobody else was looking to make him a priority, but we bid against ourselves anyway.

The sixth round pick could turn out to be a pro bowl player down the road.

But the Texans are trying to buy themselves to respectability right now.

I don't know that Osweiler and Fuller make the Texans anything special in the AFC.

There are still a lot of holes on both sides of the ball, so how do you proceed? Do you try to bring the level of both the O and D up simultaneously, or focus more on one side than the other. I could see a desire to get as much of the offense fixed around Kirk as quickly as possible and focus on the D going forward. Picking up Norman should help right away in one of the biggest areas of need on D. Should we focus more on the Offense the rest of the way, go D , or just go best player on the board regardless.

Thanks for all of the very nice compliments.

I just wanted to let everyone know that this move today was a nightmare. Heavy rains really hindered the movers (we had flood warnings and vivid lightning strikes throughout the day) and it took much longer than planned. I'm spent.

Therefore, no other mocks are planned. Just look at the mocks from yesterday and the choices would be similar.

I hate that it came to this decision, but it is the right one. We'll have evaluations on the picks and UDFAs this coming week. In the meantime, I will be unpacking boxes this weekend.

I hope you are enjoying the draft. We have more to post in this thread next week and then we look forward to OTAs, rookie camp, mini-camp, and training camp.

The Redskins now have about $8.2M in cap space and haven’t restructured a contract thus far. The top 51+Pool cap is about $12.0M.

The Redskins had three trades in the draft and now have three new draft picks for 2017 (Rounds 4, 5, 6).

Chris Culliver was cut with a post June 1st designation. That saves $8M this year with a $2.5M dead cap hit in 2017.

Culliver failed a physical on Monday.

Redskins released/waived the following players on Monday: Christo Bilukidi (DL), Desmond Bishop (LB), Derrick Mathews (LB), LaRon Byrd (WR), Anthony Johnson (DL), Kamal Johnson (DL) and Al Louis-Jean (CB).

Trent Murphy added a lot of bulk and muscle to his frame in recent months. He will continue to do so. Guess who is now going to be a fulltime defensive lineman?

Murphy checks in at about 280 pounds now. He is looking to add another ten pounds or so of bulk and muscle. Your new 3-4 DE.

The Redskins appear to be targeting next year as an offseason that is aimed at keeping key players. If the cap remains the same, the team will have about $32M in cap space.

The cap next season is expected to conservatively rise by about $10M or as much as $13M. That would give the Redskins about $42M to $45M in cap space.

Assuming a new contract for Kirk Cousins is in place this summer and after a post June 1 release of Andre Roberts, the Redskins could have $47M to $55M of cap space for 2017. Possibly a bit higher.

Free Agency, The Mock Drafts, 2016 (Continual Updates)​

Greetings from the new office of BBQ World Headquarters.

Today we bring you the annual BBQ self analysis grade for draft mocks in 2016. No mock will ever be 100% perfect, but the efforts will continue as that is the goal each year.

Also, BBQ would like to apologize for not having a mock last Saturday for the remaining rounds. Templates and a database are used extensively each year and for whatever reason, BBQ inexplicably forgot to have such a template prepared for those final rounds.

I could blame the pressure of moving that day, but the bottom line is that a mistake was made. The players had been selected already, but lack of a template hindered that final mock prediction. Again, I apologize.

Here is the list of players for that final mock and we will use this to help with grading.
Round Four: A trade was predicted to the latter part of round four and the team would add a late fifth rounder. The pick was Jordan Howard, RB.
Round Five: The pick was Matt Ioannadis. BBQ figured that a DT/DE was needed.
Round Five: DeAndre Houston-Carson, FS.
Round Six: Nate Sudfeld, QB. Another pick, Cody Kessler, was gone. Sudfeld was featured a lot in the mocks and this would’ve been the next choice after Kessler was selected earlier.
Round Seven: Jeremy Cash, SS. BBQ was going to take a longshot here and thought there was an outside chance of this happening. Bottom line, it didn’t come to fruition.
Round Seven: Keyarris Garrett, WR. BBQ was going to take another longshot here. Again, it did not happen.

With all of that in mind and being said, let’s get right down to the grading.

Round One: Josh Doctson
It was suggested several times that the Redskins could select a wide receiver in the first round, but BBQ never really put much stock in that belief. The mocks mostly featured defensive linemen or defensive tackles – a team need. Late reports suggested that the GM was focused on a center, but was taken before the Redskins could pick. Several mocks suggested that a trade could happen. It did happen, but the Redskins traded down just one position.
BBQ Self Analysis Grade: D-

Round Two: Su’a Cravens, ILB/SS, Southern California
BBQ began to mock him as an early third round prospect for the Redskins – mostly a week before the draft. He went in the latter part of round two. BBQ scores a near hit.
BBQ Self Analysis Grade: A


Round Three: Kendall Fuller, CB, Virginia Tech
Fuller was mocked much earlier in the draft season, but only in the second round. BBQ continued to keep him on the watch list until the second day of the draft.
BBQ Self Analysis Grade: C+

Round Four: No Pick
BBQ almost always had at least two picks in this round and, at times, as many as three selections. A trade took the Redskins out of round four altogether. This is a total whiff.
BBQ Self Analysis Grade: F

Round Five: Matt Ioannidis, DT/DE, Temple
We had mocked the defensive ace on a number of occasions and had him as a selection on the final mock. No defensive linemen had been selected at that juncture and we thought this could happen. We got the round and player mocked correctly.
BBQ Self Analysis Grade: A

Round Six: Nate Sudfeld, QB, Indiana
Sudfeld was a mainstay in the mocks, mostly in the seventh round, but moved up in recent weeks to the sixth round after information came forth that the Redskins were seeking a QB in that area of the draft. We maintained throughout the entire process that a QB would be taken in the late rounds. This was BBQ’s best prediction in the entire process.
BBQ Self Analysis Grade: A+

Round Seven: Steven Daniels, ILB, Boston College
We did have OLBs and ILBs mocked at times in rounds five through seven. Special teams selections are made in these rounds and this seventh round choice reflects that decision. Daniels was never featured by BBQ.
BBQ Self Analysis Grade: D+

Round Seven: Keith Marshall, RB, Georgia
Yes, we did feature RBs this offseason, but it was often in the fourth round – sometimes the third. Marshall was never mentioned by BBQ.
BBQ Self Analysis Grade: C-

When looking at the entire mocking process and who the Redskins selected, BBQ made a determined effort and had mixed results. To be sure, that is typically the result. We had pretty good hits in Cravens, Fuller, Ioannidis, and Sudfeld.

BBQ really takes pride in the Ioannidis and Sudfeld prognostications. The Cravens choice was pretty good as well. The Fuller choice – less so, but not so bad.

A big, proverbial “ugh” for predictions in the first, fourth, and seventh rounds tempers the enthusiasm somewhat. We thought of a “C+” grade, but actually hitting on four choices, more or less, is something to think about. We thought about an “A-“, but those three missed rounds weigh heavily. So here is BBQ’s choice for an overall grade for the 2016 mocking season.
BBQ Overall Self Analysis Grade: B

We’ll try to do better next year. You deserve it.

Today we bring you a preview of the 2017 offseason with a mock. We won’t have another mock until the bye week this coming season. We are listing only seniors as these are the only players that we know who are available next year.

While some may feel it is way too early to speculate, BBQ tries to anticipate what could happen at this time next year. There are no videos, just players with a small explanation about them and the possible team needs.

The Redskins have nine picks overall in 2017. Trades in the recent draft produced extra choices in the fourth and sixth rounds. The Redskins did not have a fifth rounder, but those same trades did produce a selection in that round.

Round One: Johnathan Ford, FS, Auburn
The free position has been neglected for far too long and Ford could be the answer.

Round Two: Josh Carraway, OLB, TCU
If Junior Galette is gone after one season, Carraway would be a good pick here and could play behind Kerrigan or Smith and push for significant playing time.

Round Three: Kyle Fuller, C, Baylor
This position simply can’t be ignored another year. Fuller could start right away.

Round Four: Corey Davis, WR, Western Michigan
The eventual replacement for Pierre Garcon is found.

Round Four: Chris Wormley DT/DE, Michigan
DT is a position that really needs attention and Wormley is a good selection.

Round Five: Richie Brown, ILB, Mississippi St.
Special teamers and depth at ILB is a good thing.

Round Six: Justin Davis, RB, Southern California
Does Matt Jones have a good 2016? Anyway, it can’t hurt to add some talent and depth at RB.

Round Six: Nico Siragusa, OG, San Diego St.
No, he is not related to the other Siragusa. However, he is a talented lineman for the Aztecs.

Round Seven: Jeremy Sprinkle, TE, Arkansas
It never hurts to bring in a young blocker on the depth chart.

There is your early look at 2017 with this mock. Will the list look much different next offseason? Probably so. However, take a look at this late October mock that was made during the bye week (as done each year).

As you can see, BBQ tried to anticipate conditions at that time and thought it would continue late into the season, but the team had a great second half. So much had changed. So mocks are typically very inaccurate that early. Oh, did you notice the first round pick?

Now it is time to really focus on rookie camp, remaining OTAs, mini-camp, and training camp. We’ll also update the FA situations as they occur.

The Redskins had three trades in the draft and now have three new draft picks for 2017 (Rounds 4, 5, 6).

The Redskins waived UDFA, Joe Gore. The roster now stands at 88. Two players will/can be added.

UDFA Vernon Adams, OB, Oregon (by way of Eastern Washington) is in town for the Redskins at rookie camp and hopes to make the roster.

Talk persists with Redskins pundits who believe that the Redskins could add a veteran DE/DT via a trade. One of the extra draft picks could be used to execute such a transaction.

Yes, talks are ongoing between the Redskins and Kirk Cousins. However, don’t expect a deal until the July 15 deadline – possibly a day prior.

Having new draftees and new free agents will likely help the team improve. However, some players are returning from injuries and it is similar to getting a new player on the roster. Those team members include:

Some minor news to start the week.

Seasonal Updates:

Free agents signed after May 12 do not count against/for compensatory picks for the next draft. If a former Redskins player signs with another team before May 12, then he becomes a compensatory pick. The Redskins are out of luck if the former player signs after that date. This formula does not apply to any players who were released.

It is estimated that Kendall Fuller is at 95% as he recovers from last season’s knee injury.

Second year center Austin Reiter has added more than fifteen pounds of muscle and weighs in at about 315. He has looked impressive in OTAs and in the rookie camp (allowed to participate due to lack of playing time in 2015). He still has a ways to go before making the roster.

Other second year players at rookie camp included OT Cody Booth, RB Mack Brown, DE Corey Crawford and OT Takoby Cofield.

Su’a Cravens lined up at ILB for rookie camp. The team wants him learn that position first – master it – and then learn the strike safety position.

Prior to today’s Ryan Kerrigan golf event, Brandon Scherff was practicing and hit the golf ball 332 yards. The driver looked very small in his hands.

Important Dates This Spring, Summer, Fall:

The following dates are for the Redskins front office, veterans, rookies, and UDFAs.

May 19-22: NFLPA Rookie Premiere. Rookies (usually first and/or second-round selections) must be allowed by their respective clubs to attend. These selected players are unavailable for offseason workouts, OTA days, and minicamps during this four day period. Josh Doctson will attend.

May 23-25: NFL Spring League Meeting - Charlotte, NC.

May 24-26: OTAs.

May 31-June 2: OTAs.

June 2: Dead cap money for June 1 release candidates (Chris Culliver) now carries over to 2017. Andre Roberts was not a post June 1 release, thus saving $3M this year and no dead cap in 2017.

June 6-9: OTAs.

June 14-16: Veteran Mini-Camp.

June 19-25: Rookie Symposium - Aurora, OH.

July 15: 4PM EDT deadline to get a long term deal with Kirk Cousins. Otherwise he will play 2016 with the franchise contract.

July 27: All Players report to Bon Secours Training Center in Richmond, VA that evening for training camp.

July 28: Training camp opens.

August 30: Roster must be trimmed to seventy-five players by 4pm EDT.

September 3: Roster must be trimmed to fifty-three players by 4pm EDT.

September 4: Ten eligible players can be placed on the practice squad.

September 12: Season opens at home against Pittsburgh – 7pm EDT.

It is estimated that Kendall Fuller is closer to 100% now as he recovers from last season’s knee injury. He should be ready for training camp. He has practiced at OTA this week and looked sharp.

Second year center Austin Reiter has added more than fifteen pounds of muscle and weighs in at about 315. He has looked impressive in OTAs and in the rookie camp (allowed to participate due to lack of playing time in 2015). He still has a ways to go before making the roster.

Trent Murphy now checks in at nearly 290 pounds – nearly all of it muscle. OTAs could determine if this is the right move (transition to DE).

Junior Galette is likely to be held from practicing until training camp.

As in previous years, DeSean Jackson is a “no show” for OTAs.

Rashad Ross has been struggling somewhat in the offseason programs. He is having difficulties with mastering receiving routes and executing them.

Shawn Lauvao could be on the bubble due to his high salary and injury concerns. He reports that the five offseason surgeries leave him feeling better than he has felt in many years. Lauvao is one to watch in the coming weeks.

Injured players who were observers this week included Chris Thompson, Perry Riley, Junior Galette, Shawn Lauvao, and Josh Doctson.

Doctson tweaked an Achilles and was held out of practices this week. He is likely to return this coming week.

Before signing the suddenly available Josh Norman, the Redskins offered a contract to Brandon Browner. He ultimately decided to return to Seattle.

Spencer Long is getting work at center during OTAs. He is still more comfortable at guard as per his statements, but is getting a good vibe for center. Early reviews are favorable.

Niles Paul was participating in the practices this week. It’s a bit surprising given the nature of his injury late last summer. His participation was limited.

Jordan Reed has bulked up to 246, but has not lost a step or his speed. Spencer Long comes in at 325. Morgan Moses is at 335. Ryan Kerrigan at 265. Bigger, stronger, faster seems to be a theme with many Redskins this offseason. Even Kirk Cousins is now at 210 (up from 202).
