Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, The Mock Drafts, 2015 (Continual Updates)

This draft is not deep at cb or s.

Makes more sense to sign younger free agents with some upside and let them play in 2015.

Meanwhile, at #5 we can perhaps draft a qb or outside rusher, of which there are several available.

The depth in this draft after Round 1 seems to be OL.

I think you have to play free agency and the draft board in concert, focusing on where the respective strengths are.

This was a good year to be looking for a veteran running back but not a good year for qbs or OL.
 
Yes, Colt McCoy is returning. No word if we are going to sign Hatfield.

Free Agency continues and we take a current look at the Redskins franchise. We have posted several mocks and those will continue to be updated with an increase in frequency as the draft approaches. In fact, we will have a new mock in two days.

I'm not so sure on ths guy Win after checking out some of his listed weaknesses.

Analysis


Strengths
Outstanding production and ball skills as a one-year starter. Totaled 17 passes defensed and 14 interceptions. Lights up when quarterbacks look his way. Smooth backpedal and fluid hips to mirror and match slot receivers. Instincts and angles to play the ball are at the top of the draft class. Understands route concepts and reads quarterbacks. Chance taker who can swing momentum. In man, undercuts routes and plays the ball. Senses when quarterbacks lock in and will leave his area looking for the interception. Aggression level ratchets up when ball is in the air. Can run through receivers with big hits or play ball at catch point. Soft hands and able to high point when necessary. Shows zero transitional hesitation with feet. Can play with sudden movements in space. Read Florida State QB Jameis Winston like a book and picked him twice in 2014.


Weaknesses
One-year wonder. Discipline needed for the position goes missing. Can be moved around field by quarterbacks looking him off. Will lose inside-out leverage on plays headed to perimeter. Sits on play-action a shade too long. Shows lack of urgency in long pursuit. Atrocious tackler. Would rather hit than tackle. Doesn't wrap up and gives limited effort. Had 44 total tackles with 20 missed and/or broken tackles, which was the worst ratio for an FBS starter. Slow to break down in space and lacks balance and base when tackling. Doesn't always play at full speed or with max effort. Gives half-hearted attempt as high-to-low blitzer.

Bottom Line
One-year starter at free safety, posting outrageous ball-production numbers. While Byrd is the NFL comparison from a ball-skills standpoint, Holliman doesn't show Byrd's fire or competitiveness. A feast or famine free safety whose lack of field discipline will be more heavily exploited in the NFL, Holliman's ball skills and instincts will surely excite teams, even though his rumored lack of football character could sabotage the talent.

STRENGTHS

: Possesses a compact, well-proportioned frame and isn't afraid to leave his feet to deliver a pop. Good vision and awareness of the play. Flies upfield in run support and gets a jump on the ball right out of the quarterback's hand, putting himself in position to make plays.

Good hand-eye coordination and body control to make the tough interception. Loose hips to change directions fluidly and understands route progressions, aiding his jump on the ball. Looks to deliver big hits when he senses that opponents aren't expecting it; getting in pops on receivers crossing the middle, would-be blockers and to knock ballcarriers out of bounds.

WEAKNESSES: Unreliable tackler due to inconsistent angles and technique as a hitter. Can flash from across the field to record the impressive tackle for loss but takes risky angles, leaving himself and his teammates vulnerable to cut-backs from the ballcarrier.

Drops his shoulder into ballcarriers occasionally to deliver the emphatic knockdown but doesn't wrap his arms securely and therefore some of his attempts slide off.

Player Overview
Most expected that the Louisville Cardinals would struggle replacing 2014 first-round pick Calvin Pryor at safety. Instead, Holliman exploded for an FBS-leading 14 interceptions, tying an NCAA record set 46 years ago and taking home the Thorpe Award as the nation's top defensive over the likes of Alabama's Landon Collins and Oregon's Ifo Ekpre-Olomu.

While Holliman's ball-hawking redshirt junior campaign deserves acknowledgment, it doesn't necessarily make him a highly regarded NFL prospect. Holliman possesses awareness, agility and hands - traits that certainly project well at safety in today's pass-happy NFL. He also sports a relatively slight frame, however, and shows questionable angles and technique as a tackler.

Jeebus..if such a creature exists then I could live with passing on him. Then again we don't have HazHeem any more and I gotta feeling the new staff may be able to actually teach these kids. Namely Perry Fewell

Give me a guy who you need to reel in, over a guy who you need to motivate every day of the week. You can teach angles, you can teach tackling, what you can't teach is speed, and effort. His profile screams to me that a lot of the reason he was out of position was because he outran the tackle. While I do think Landry had similar comments about him, Landry played the ball about as well as a dog when you toss an ice cube straight at em... goes right over their head and they fall on their butt. We have a CB staff that is built for man to man, physical at the line play. The FS should not be the primary coverage option. He should be there in support. A guy who can flash, make up ground, and can find his nose in the backfield is a good thing...
 
Just wanted to stop by and say, how does it feel having a legit GM so far, guys and gals? Pretty awesome, huh? Can just sense the roster building with a proper, long-term vision. We might actually field a defense this season. Like, one that actually defends against yards and points and stuff.

Maybe start building towards having guys we lose in FA, like Knighton next year, that'll actually net us some compensational picks, all the while having options within the roster to replace who we lose.

No desperation moves. No trading draft picks for vets. No scrambling to fill every hole in one offseason so we can give ourselves the false hope that we can compete for a championship, only to hinder the development of other guys who get stuck behind on the depth chart. Exciting, isn't it?

Between work and moderating on ES, it's been a bit tough to stop by as much as I'd like to here... miss you shitheads. :)

The only problem I see is, with a bit over a year before the 16 draft, a players ranking can change drastically for many reasons. The other thing to think about is players hitting the wire once camp starts. Ya just never know who may come available once camp is moving along.

But the Washington front office took a new approach to free agency this year, resisting the usual rash of over-the-hill veteran signings and flashy names and instead picking up players in key positions at the right value. Defensive tackles Terrance Knighton and Stephen Paea and cornerback Chris Culliver were signed to smart deals and can all contribute at a high level next year.

Read that a couple of times and just try not to breakout into a grin.
