Beathard used to like to scout guys at smaller Division I schools, taking guys like Darrell Green from Texas A&I and Charles Mann from Nevada-Reno.

At the same time, he drafted both Mark May and Russ Grimm from the same OL at Pittsburgh (then a national power).

Don't box in a good GM. Scot will take guys wherever the talent is there.

Falling in love with personal alma matar players or local players from local schools is a bad way to draft.

Moses is a keen example of that kind of thinking.

I see the veiled cheap shot, but it is not warranted. I had Morgan Moses in most of the mocks last season for a reason. The team made him a target and, indeed, they did draft him. It had nothing to do with my alma mater.

In previous seasons, I rarely mocked a player from said institution. My FA and draft research is based on team needs, reports, prospect meetings, etc., not loyalty to any school or organization.

Go after my mocks or FA picks and grade them accordingly (anything from "A" to "F"), but don't make it personal.

BT man move over bro, you're HOGGin all the warm water in the hotub time machine!

You guys writing off Moses after one season (in which he was hurt btw) may be premature.

Premature Evaluation?

They've got medicine for that, right?

Free Agency, The Mock Drafts, 2015 (Continual Updates)

Welcome to the 2015 offseason. We are taking a different approach for the new football year as we combine our mocks with the free agency period. We’ll have periodic updates as warranted and will use just this one entry instead of posting multiple blogs.

Next week we will begin the 2015 football season on March 10 (4pm EDT) and the free agency period will commence. Today, we have our second mock as the draft will slowly take center stage. The mocks will gradually increase in number as we get closer to the draft.

Feel free to offer your own ideas about the draft, free agency, team cuts, coaching changes, and anything else related to these subjects. Too, we’d like to see your mocks if you are so inclined.

Without any further delays, let’s take a look at the latest developments and the second mock for 2015.

The Redskins were hoping for a trade in the first round, but Marcus Mariota is chosen second overall and there are no trade partners.

Round One: Randy Shelton, DT, Washington
Without any trades available, the Redskins decide to take the best (arguably) DT in the draft. In Shelton they have an impact player who will reside in the defensive front middle for a decade or more. He is an excellent defender who holds his gap well and has a great burst from the snap. Has great leverage and eats double teams for breakfast, lunch, and supper.
Other Possible Targets:
Leonard Williams, DT, Southern Cal
Brandon Scherff, OT, Iowa
Andrus Peat, OT, Stanford
Shane Ray, OLB, Missouri
Ereck Flowers, OT, Miami

Round Two: Arie Kouandjio, OG, Alabama
He is a strong run blocker who is ready to step into a starting role in the NFL. Kouandjio, seen as a likely prospect to replace Chris Chester, improved on his pass protection skills over the last two seasons. Very athletic at the point of attack and has a very successful history of man-handling the biggest and most talented of nose tackles.
Other Possible Targets:
Byron Jones, CB, Connecticut
Arik Armstead, DE/DT, Oregon
Kevin Johnson, CB, Wake Forest
Jordan Phillips, DT, Oklahoma
Benardrick McKinney, ILB/OLB, Mississippi St.

Round Three:
The Redskins make their first trade of the draft as they move down in the third round and add an extra fourth rounder in the process.

Round Three: Gerod Holliman, FS, Louisville
The Redskins select a talented ACC player who is able to fill a huge need. Holliman immediately upgrades the free safety position as Ryan Clark is finished/retired. The Louisville standout has ball hawking skills and should become an instant starter.
Other Possible Targets:
Lorenzo Mauldin, OLB, Louisville
T.J. Yeldon, RB, Alabama
Rashad Greene, WR, Florida St.
Daryl Williams, OT, Oklahoma
Stephone Anthony, ILB, Clemson

Round 4: Corey Robinson, OT, South Carolina
Robinson is mountain-sized and could blend in as a summit somewhere in the Great Smokey Mountains. He is able to create his own solar eclipse over most of the state. Did we say he was huge? Robinson should be able to fit in immediately at RT and is solid in both run support and pass protection.
Other Possible Targets:
Henry Anderson, DE, Stanford
Laken Tomlinson, OG, Duke
Vince Mayle, WR, Washington St.
Devin Funchess, WR/TE, Michigan
Jacoby Glenn, CB, Central Florida

Round 4: Durell Eskridge, SS, Syracuse
Although it is only a coincidence, the Redskins add a second safety from the ACC. Eskridge played FS, but many scouts project him as a SS in the NFL. With Holliman and Eskridge, the Redskins will have size, speed, strength, and needed talent at the safety positions.
Other Possible Targets:
See above.

Round Five: Jarvis Harrison, G, Texas A&M
Aggie linemen have been nothing short of spectacular in recent years and Harrison is another in a long line of great tackles and guards from the SEC power. He is massive and some scouts considered him to be the most talented in a group of standouts on A&M’s line. He should move Shawn Lauvao to the bench.
Other Possible Targets:
Donovan Smith, OT, Penn St.
Sean Mannion, QB, Oregon St.
Kaleb Eulls, DE, Mississippi St.
Corey Crawford, DE, Clemson
Xzavier Dickson, OLB, Alabama

Round Six: Jake Smith, C, Louisville
It’s highly unlikely for Smith to push for a starting role this season, but he would have good tutors in Bill Callahan and Kory Lichtensteiger. He could be inserted into the lineup in the next year or two.
Other Possible Targets:
Matt Jones, RB, Florida
Terry Williams, DT, East Carolina
Marcus Peters, CB, Washington
Zachary Zenner, FB, South Dakota St.
DaVaris Daniels, WR, Notre Dame

Round Seven: Nick Boyle, TE, Delaware
Boyle can snag his share of receptions, but blocking is his forte. In fact, his superior blocking skillset is better than that of Logan Paulsen’s. Boyle could easily end the stay of the UCLA product.
Other Possible Targets:
Dechane Durante, FS, Northern Illinois
Tyeler Davison, DT/DE, Fresno St.
Cody Fajardo, QB, Nevada
Trey DePriest, ILB, Alabama
Julian Wilson, CB/FS, Oklahoma

Prospects Contacted, Interviewed, Visited:
EW – East-West Shrine game.
SB – Senior Bowl.
Combine – NFLC
Team Pro Day – TPB
Team Visit – TV

Derrick Lott, DT, Tennessee-Chattanooga EW
Zachary Zenner, FB, South Dakota St. EW
Darren Waller, WR, Georgia Tech EW

Jake Ryan, LB, Michigan EW
Ryan Russell, DE, Purdue EW
DaVaris Daniels, WR, Notre Dame NFLC
Marcus Peters, CB, Washington NFLC
Stefon Diggs, WR, Maryland NFLC
Brandon Scherff, OT, Iowa NFLC

There is your second mock of the 2015 offseason and an updated prospect list. That is all for now, but the updates will certainly increase in volume and frequency. See you as we go along.

Hail To The Redskins!

You guys writing off Moses after one season (in which he was hurt btw) may be premature.

Free Agency, The Mock Drafts, 2015 (Continual Updates)

This week we take another look at free agency and with a new football GM in place, the Redskins were expected to be minor players in the FA market. However, we had an early signing and two key players were released. With plenty of cap room, the Redskins could be something of a player when March 10 rolls around. Earlier this week we had our second mock – feel free to scroll back and see what was posted. The mocks will slowly increase in number as we get closer to the draft.

Feel free to offer your own ideas about the draft, free agency, team cuts, coaching changes, and anything else related to these subjects. Too, we’d like to see your mocks if you are so inclined.

Available Free Agents:

Quarterbacks:
Jake Locker, Titans
Mark Sanchez, Eagles
Matt Moore, Dolphins
Brian Hoyer, Browns

Preferred choice is Moore with Hoyer as a close second.

Running Backs, Fullbacks:
Stevan Ridley, Patriots
Matt Asiata, Vikings (RFA)

Ridley is very underrated and is likely the best RB on that roster. Asiata would cure the short yardage woes and is an effective receiver out of the backfield.

Tight Ends:
Virgil Green, Broncos
James Casey, Eagles

Green is an excellent blocker and should receive serious consideration. Casey is an excellent blocker too and could bring a lot of insight on the Ducks, er, Eagles offense.

Wide Receivers:
Jeremy Maclin, Eagles.
Kenny Britt, Rams
Brian Hartline, Dolphins

Could the Redskins steal another player from the Ducks, er, Eagles? It’s unlikely. Britt is underrated and would’ve had higher numbers if the QB situation was stable.

Offensive Tackles:
None.

Offensive Guards:
Mike Iupati, 49ers
Clint Boling, Bengals
James Carpenter, Seahawks

Mike Iupati could be a top target. Some reports are suggesting that he will be signed.

Centers:
None.

Defensive Tackles:
Muhammad Wilkerson, Jets
Ahtyba Rubin, Browns
Dan Williams, Cardinals
Ndamukong Suh, Lions (DE)

Wilkerson and Rubin would be a good solution for the DT woes. Both are likely affordable. Williams is rumored to be favored by the Redskins. A Boy Ndamed Suh is placed here based on far fetched rumors.

Defensive Ends:
Jared Odrick, Dolphins
Corey Peters, Falcons
Ndamukong Suh, Lions (DT)

Odrick may prove to be too expensive, but the Redskins should try to sign if possible. A Boy Ndamed Suh, again?

Outside Linebackers:
Pernell McPhee, Ravens
Jabaal Sheard, Browns
Brandon Graham, Eagles
Greg Hardy, Panthers

McPhee is the preferred choice, but will be way too expensive. Graham is probably a better fit. Sheard could be the best of the lot with experience at DE as well – could be special in a hybrid 3-4 scheme – excellent size. Hardy could come cheap based on character issues, but not likely.

Inside Linebackers:
Spencer Paysinger, Giants

It will depend on what is done with Perry Riley and the draft. Paysinger is solid in coverage packages.

Cornerbacks:
Chris Culliver, 49ers
Walter Thurmond III, Giants
Bryon Maxwell, Seahawks

Culliver and Thurmond stand out, but depth is needed and Thurmond is a former pick of Scot McCloughan. Maxwell is probably too expensive.

Safeties:
Da'Norris Searcy, Bills
Sergio Brown, Colts
Ron Parker, Chiefs
Rahim Moore, Broncos
Nate Allen, Eagles
Tyvon Branch, Raiders

Searcy is the preferred choice and Brown would bring special teams abilities. Parker could be signed - if affordable. He is a SS with considerable experience at CB.

Special Teams:
None. A returner should be targeted as an UDFA after the draft.

There is your second look at free agency this week. We’ll return with two more entries on Monday and Tuesday. Feel free to add names to the list or subtract from what has been posted. Who do you prefer to be the main target(s) in free agency? Who would you keep? Who would you not re-sign? Who would you cut? That is all for now. See you as we go along.

Hail To The Redskins!

Jordan Cameron is another TE that will be heavily pursued. He'll be expensive, especially after yday's deal the Panthers just handed out, but he looks great at times.

He's young and coming off his best season, but even last year he wasn't a tackling machine. Yeah, he had 6 sacks, but his other stats are pretty ho-hum. I like the youth and the fact that he seems to have a high motor.

So, what's the story on why the Bears don't want to bring him back?

Fox is a defensive coach and doesn't want to keep an interior player that is capable of pressuring the qb?
