Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions, 2019

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

I dunno - I think the Giants by far got the better of that trade. I get that they are sending a lot of their talent packing, but that's a lot of value for a pain-in-the-ass WR... Gotta wonder what they are planning. I'm wondering if they don't want to trade up and get Murray?

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

Yea....no sense learning from the past! Dang, I'm all in on trading 2019, 2020 and 2021 first round picks for Dan Jones - if that's what it takes!!! The heck with edge rusher, ILB, CB, OG, TE, WR, o-line depth! We're all set and ready to roll in 2019!

BB...I liked the move for Smith at the time it was made. It became obvious as the season moved on that what we ended up with was a very likable guy who was way over-paid, especially at his age, for basically one very good season in KC. The Skns had screwed up the QB position for years, totally mishandling the Cousins situation, and panicked into the Smith signing - which Coach Reid gladly walked the team into...again. So, here we are, strapped by past decisions - again.

Thought question: suppose Alex had not been hurt. Does one believe he improved, plateau'd or declined as the season wore on? Had he not been hurt, what would be the outlook for this team?
No my brother. I'm all for pitchin' a bitch cause we missed the Burger King at the last exit. But after a mile or so, it's time to start looking for the next place to eat. The Smith trade was a good one. As BB said, no one can predict injury. No one.

Learning from the past, does not require fretting over it, for all eternity. Or, making it sound worse than it actually was.

Sometimes, when you're playing spin the bottle, it lands on the worse possible option. When it does, French kiss the ugly wench like it's the only kiss you'll ever get. Because it just might be.

Then, hope for a better spin on the next turn. :iloveyou:

1. Appropriateness of the simile aside, I might respectfully submit that one doesn't blindly look for the next place to eat. There is a plan and a logic on how to go about doing this. In our lives, much of this is based upon experience. Or, more precisely, past successes and failures. Moreover, the choices you have are conditioned by previous decisions: the route you decided to take, the time of day you decided to drive, etc., etc.

2. You are speaking to tone and attitude. Worthy subjects. But largely immaterial to consistent, rational decision-making.

3. Let's put aside that outcomes are purely driven by injuries - as the argument presented wants to go (i.e., unexplainable = just friggin plain bad luck). Injuries are not random. There are statistical patterns. Confidence intervals can be built, preventive actions can be taken, tolerance can be built, and so on. Probability is not the same thing as certainty. And the outcomes are the product of more thasn just injuries but many factors (coaching, depth, will, execution, blah, blah) that can be managed...that can translate to one, two maybe three more victories.

4. The Smith trade was not bad...it just wasn't good. Do we know whether the Skins FO performed an actual risk analysis? Do you think that they looked deeply into all the options from a long-term pov or do you think they thought best short-term option? Do you think they really thought through the financial downside to all possible outcomes - including injury and the probability of injury? i.e., impact analysis. Or do you think they wanted to diffuse an angry fanbase that understood how badly the FO screwed up the whole QB situation for years? Now, I guess one could argue the Smith injury is a so-called Black Swan event. But isn't that precisely what many people and companies actually do? All a bs academic way of saying they didn't weight all the options by probability based and cost weigthed impacts - IMO. I bought into all the hype about Alex being a capable QB who had a rocky professional start but matured over time. What I saw was a QB who declined through each game. I saw a coach who stupidly decided not to play his new QB in the new system (for the QB) during pre-season - can't believe how incredibly dumb that decision was. And why? To prevent injury. Hmmmmm. But that's upredictable (so the argument goes) - a random event. So the logic doesn't stand. Bottom line is that the current situation, specifically resource constraints and lack of a quality starting QB for the long-term, is the product of a string of bad FO decisions. Part of future success, especially for this forlorn franchise, is learning from the lessons of the past. Why I'm being uncharacteristicly optimistic here in assuming that BruDan can do this! Gimme some credit! :)

Naah. Building a roster isn't like spinning a bottle. One at least hopes that's not the case for the Skins' FO. But as a hypothesis......I may have to give this one some more thought!

btw....the 6-3 argument is a canard. The foundation for most of the success last season was the defense - not the offense.

All that said: you are the AX-man! You I believe in. It's unfortunate you aren't an NFL quality QB - but neither am I. See? More in common! We aren't all that different!

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

Right now - for the record...

Is the Landon Collins contract good or bad?

Put it out there without having the ability of 20/20 hindsight. Go for it.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

Easy.

1. Financially. No. High end.

2. Talent. Perhaps. Depends on scheme used. More room for the Skins to screw it up. He's a tackler and not necessarily a strong cover guy. Others have made the same point.

3. Past record. Yes. 3* All-Pro.

4. Opportuntity Cost. No. High end price limits other FA possibilities.

5. Contract. Don't know. Not privy to the deeper details. Conditioned by how Skins have mismanaged their CAP.

6. Risk Assessment.
- Playing Ability. Yes. Unlike Alex Smith - Collins is younger, has consistently performed at a high level. On flip side he just incurred a shoulder injury that hasn't been discussed in all of this. Overall, nets out at lower off-the-cuff risk.
- Financial. Don't know. Need to know contract details. Player does not have a history of physical injury, is younger, so, without better data, one is inclined to believe the probability of injury is lower. Financial cost worst case rachets up in 2022. Cap hit not small starting in 2020 (goes from initial $4mil to $14.2 mil.)

Btw...out of curiousity: if this is all chance and ex post ante analysis has no value as a predictor - what does that say for mock drafts? Why do a combine? Why interview players? Why watch tape? Why assess average and spread salaries for a players at various positions? Why have a draft - it's all chance. There's no need to measure, estimate, calculate. It's all random. In fact, since injuries are random, there's no sense in drafting by need either since you don't know what positions will be impacted - just implement an algorithm that randomly drafts by position. Why have a cap? You can't put together a comprehensive risk analysis since it's all random - pay every player the same salary.

Nope. It should be clear this all boils down to risk (impact, probability). As in all areas: quantitative assessment that deals with historical data, statistical analysis that doesn't under or over fit the data, and solid hypotheses that capture the relevant variables. Yes, the psychological factors are inherently harder to measure/quantify. At any given time, resources are fixed - the cap sets the ceiling. It's a resource allocation problem - so this is also an optimization challenge. The Skins do this every time they make a contract decision - whether they want to or not.

How best use available resources.

How risk influences the optimization decision.

Winging it and copping out by arguing it's all random so let's not try to rationalize the decision process using probability seems, well, lazy to me. Then again, it may explain outcomes for many teams including our beloved one-time Super Bowl champions.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

So which team is so brilliant that they know every player who will ever get injured?
Answer: Does not exist.

If statistical analysis was the end all, be all, random, would not exist. Would it?

I get that there is more to it than throwing darts at a board. But it's also nowhere near Dr. McCoy reattaching Spock's brain, either.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

Don't know if it has been mentioned but Haha Dix is not coming back

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

As expected the Redskins released linebacker Zach Brown and defensive lineman Stacy McGee, a source confirmed. USA Today first reported the moves. They were long expected and save the Redskins a combined $8 million. Neither figured in the Redskins future and weren't just about saving money.

Now we have an apparent move by the Skins to get Haha back.
Not sure what to expect. We should know soon.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

The smart move would have been to let Smith play out the final $18M year of his contract and see how he performed in this system with these players.

There was no need to give him a rich extension ahead of time as the comp of a #3 pick didn't warrant it.

It's not like Washington trades two #1 picks for a 28 or 29 year old qb and really needs to lock him up right away.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

Dix looked awful last season.

With so many need areas to address I don't see spending big dollars on another safety.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

Al, after examining the core details of the contract for Collins, I have come to the same conclusion as the local Redskins media and football media across the league: it is a superb contract and Eric Shaffer has been universally praised as a mastermind in making such a deal.

The contract is out there for everyone to see. It has been out there for two days at OTC and Spotrac.

Talent is undeniable. You might be alone in your thinking of Collins as a player, but you are entitled to that opinion.

As for all-star bowl games, combines, pro days, private workouts, etc. - further evals on players provides teams with additional insight to any prospect. Really can't believe that anyone needs such an explanation, but that's fine.

As for mocks, predictions, etc. - I can stop that practice altogether in here. If that is the feeling of everyone, then I will cease to bring guests to do mocks and I will discontinue the practice as well. During the winter, I typically rise before dawn on Saturdays and spend all or most of the day doing evals - watching vids, examining scouting reports, reading any and all relevant material, talk on the phone or on skype with various Redskins pundits, and try to DM prospects if at all possible. Why? To make key prospects known to everyone at BGO - nothing more, nothing less.

I do my best to cultivate relationships with key members of the media and the vast array of pundits out there, including some that I do not like? Why? To provide info for the masses at BGO. It's that simple.

I don't mind the time put into all of this - not at all. I thrive when working long days and when it serves a practical purpose. That's just me. When others benefit from all of the research that is done, then my work is not in vain. Your flippant attitude toward the team is fine - there are many times when I feel the same way. Fully understood, brother. Having a flippant disregard toward me is fine as well. That is better than taking it out on other members here.

I disseminate info for everyone here. I'm happy to do it, but only to a point. You come at me each year whether it be directly or indirectly and I'm at my wit's end. Imagine being the teacher in a class where twenty-nine students are willing to discuss the lesson plan of the day and have a healthy debate about it, but one student is off to the side and says "everything sucks". It affects the class and the teacher.

This is where I'm at right now. I'll continue with the off-season blog and there will be disagreements and agreements - I welcome that interaction. I'm done with the "everything sucks" discussions and the lengthy dissertations that follow.

First couple of games, yes. Clinton-Dix looked lost. Last four games, not so much. Watch the tape. Bringing him back is the right thing to do.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

Crowder got $17M guaranteed.

Smith got $16M guaranteed.

That's $33M for two guys that I can say are not top shelf starters.

We are paying $45M for a consistent pro bowl performer who is 26 at a position where we have literally no available talent.

Seems like a high price but a necessary purchase for quality.

When this team quits whiffing on picks like Cravens then we can act like Belichick and be confident in letting people go and depending upon the draft almost exclusively.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

I can honestly say, Burner, that your posts keep me coming back daily. For my part, please continue your efforts, as they bring me a lot of knowledge and enjoyment for our team. The site would be significantly the worse, in my opinion, without them.

Re: Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions,

Thanks, Jestin. I was very upset last night and glad that I didn't post the message at that time. I would've regretted it. Appreciate you more than you could ever know, brother.

Don't know if it has been mentioned but Haha Dix is not coming back

As of an hour ago, Rappaport has him returning to us to play next to Collins.
