Burner's Burning Questions: 2016 Season Predictions

Looking at this schedule I can honestly see 12-4. (Yes, this is still Neo typing here, I haven't been taken over by McD5).

I don't see much threat in the rest of the NFCE and I think we have a legit shot at running the table in the division for the first time in like forever. Several other teams on our schedule are there for the taking. In this scenario I see the Steelers, Panthers, Cardinals and Packers beating us.

Of course I can also see use dropping 3 games in the division, the one with the Vikings and the 4 mentioned above to finish 8-8.

I think how we win and lose this year will be every bit as important as the winning or losing itself.

The 2016 Redskins by the numbers

17—The NFL rank of their strength of schedule in terms of opponents’ 2015 winning percentage. Part of the reason it’s in the middle of the pack is because they play the rest of the teams in the NFC East twice.

.563—The Redskins’ winning percentage in 2015 (9-7)

.354—The combined winning percentage of the other three teams in the NFC East (17-31).

24—The number of years it has been since the Redskins made the playoffs for a second consecutive year (1991-1992). This is why it’s difficult to argue with those who are skeptical of the Redskins’ chances this year. The organization simply hasn’t been able to build anything approaching a consistent winner.

32—The number of years it’s been since the Redskins won consecutive NFC East titles (1983-1984)

19—The number of years since the Redskins have had a winning season for a second straight year (9-7 in 1996, 8-7-1 in 1997). They have been unable to get over ever this low bar.

13—The number of Redskins on the current 53-man roster who are new to the organization in 2016. Last year the number was 16.

4—The number of 2016 draft picks who made the 53-man roster (Josh Doctson, Su’a Cravens, Kendall Fuller, Nate Sudfeld). Last year seven draft picks made it.

74.7—Kirk Cousins completion percentage in regular season home games. That’s the highest home completion percentage in NFL history by a player with at least 100 attempts.

Gosh......if history is any indication, might as well fold up the tents and go home right now.

Still 10-6 :)

didn't see this thread before posting in random thoughts about how we'll do. Ever since I won the Redskins pickem contest two years running for Warpath Magazine, I quit predicting records. I won the big prizes with 6 win picks and took no pleasure in winning by predicting a losing Redskins record. So I don't predict records anymore.

having said that, I said we will win the division on the strength of Gruden coaching compared to the other NFCEast coaching. I am also a believer in the schedule having an impact on how you finish. In theory, its not supposed to matter, but history tells me it does. I would much rather play last years playoff teams late in the season than early. I think that's where season go south in a hurry by playing playoff teams early. On the other hand, if we play them late, then first, they may not in fact be a "playoff" team this year, making our chances better, or second, we defer the dreaded elimination game for as long a possible.

Once in the playoffs anything can happen, momentum can play a big role and don't forget, some of those playoff teams will have to lose so we don't have to play them all. I don't really care what the talking heads say about the strength of our division. The Giants win the SB with a 9-7 record winning all road games. No one said they got lucky when they finished off the Patriots.

Its our turn. I want to go to Houston to see us play the SB. Its a short road trip for me.

The Redskins have not made the playoffs in consecutive seasons since 1992.

So what? 😜

Before 2009, the Saints had not been in or won a Super Bowl.

Before 2013, Seattle had never won anything since joining the NFL in 1976.

All wearing rings now 😎

I struggle to take my rosy off season glasses off but I will force myself to...

I'm aiming at 10-6, but could also see 9-7. The strength of schedule, primetime games and the whole London thing make me wary. I love what I think I'm seeing with the receiving game and I actually am very intrigued with what the defensive scheme will ultimately be.

Tom, it's hard to believe some of those numbers. I forgot how bad we were.

19 years since back-to-back winning seasons? 32 years since back-to-back NFC East titles? Lmao.

We're going to change a lot of that this season:)

McD5, nice try...but we know you hacked into Neo's account too.

Well, i dont know about how awesome Gruden is. I think he has some room for improvement. He seems to coach really well for about half of each game. I'd like to see a little bit more of a master chessplayer in him.

That said, i do like that we are going into Year Three and no one (outside of maybe one person) is even mentioning the word "fired". I think we may finally have found that Continuity we've all been hoping for. Gruden is certainly good enough to keep around and that alone is worth something.

Seriously, when was the last time our starting QB was going into a season with two years of experience with the same offense under his belt? Without looking it up Im going to guess 19 years. So ... when was the last time we had back-to-back winning seasons? :)

That may not be a coincidence.

Wuerffel and Matthews under Spurrier don't count?

Yep.. those historical numbers are gruesome. It does play a little into the skepticism that you're trying to assuage. ;)

One thing that stands out besides Kirk's home % thingy is the draftees that made the team.

Yeah, "only 4" made the regular team this season but if the first three produce as expected (hoped) in the near future, that's damned decent.

That's three 'red chip' players out of the ten Scot claimed he needed, maybe even more will develop over the season and some might even reach 'blue chip' status.

Tom, I'd also add guys like Norman into that equation.

He may not have come via the draft, but he should probably be included to get the full picture of what McLovin has done this offseason.

Hopefully Toler and Hood too. Time will tell.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Nothing but love...

Its good to be able to acquire a DeSean Jackson or Josh Norman without compensation as free agents when they hit the open market - that's the benefit to managing the cap well and having players that are on rookie contracts, vet minimum deals and the like forming the depth on your squad.

In the past we didn't have a lot of 'value priced' starters like Morgan Moses, Brandon Scherff, Chris Baker, Ziggy Hood, Will Compton, Mason Foster, Preston Smith, Bashaud Breeland, Dustin Hopkins, etc.

We also didn't have mid-career core vets like Trent Williams, Ryan Kerrigan, Jordan Reed, and Kirk Cousins that played their entire career here in Washington and have ties to the community.

That was something that we always had under Gibbs - a core of veterans that grew up together, won together and then stayed on top together.

While free agency prevents you from stacking a 53 man roster with these types of players, you can still do what the Packers, Patriots, Broncos, Panthers do in terms of retaining their draft picks and developing players from within.

Bruce Allen didn't always do a good job of making personnel selections for the club, but he did a very good job of getting the Redskins out of salary cap hell and reducing dramatically the dead money the team has to carry from year to year.

Okay, who hacked Rich Tandler's account? :)

Need to Know: Five bold predictions for the 2016 Redskins | Rich Tandler's Real Redskins

The Redskins will win 11 games. I see this is their best-case scenario, a number they could reach with a reasonable amount of good fortune. The key would be going 5-1 against the NFL East. Even if they aren’t at the level to be able to beat the Cardinals or Panthers they could get to 11 by winning three out of four against the NFC North and against the AFC North. Home games will be the key. They play only one true road game against a team that had a winning record (Cardinals). If they take care of business at FedEx Field they have a chance to have their highest win total since 1991.

Well he did say they were bold predictions, and that only 2 of 5 were right last year. I agree with him that 11-5 is probably our best case, everything-goes-right scenerio. And no harm in thinking it might happen. You never know.

Using reverse logic.........this means we are DUE. It all evens out over time. Its our turn.

I corrected grammatical errors - it needed editing. If you see any other mistakes, please let me know.

It's tough to read my own writings these days. I know that my cognitive function is still problematic, but writing, studying, and researching helps a lot. I've been told that the healing process will take until next summer. I just soldier along.

Again, if you see mistakes, point them out. It helps. Hope everyone is having a good day.

I don't know how well it may work out or how easy to do with whatever editor you use but I've been using Adobe Acrobat and it has a playback feature so I can hear what I've written down after I'm done. Still don't catch everything but I've reduced the number of online edits I have to do quite a bit. I'm guessing there are similar programs available and don't know if it would be worthwhile but just a thought of something I found useful.
