Hockey contracts are crazy. On one hand, it gives us as fans a chance to see our favorite players continue with the team. But these contracts can also be an albatross on the team. Look at the Backstrom contract. He has 2 more years left paying him $9.2 million a year (second highest on the team). Unless he finds the fountain of youth, that’s a lot of money for a guy whose best days are behind him. But then again, we get to see a fan favorite and Ovechkin’s number 1 assist man potentially be there when he breaks the record. It’s the same with Wilson. Love the guy. I hope he plays at a high level, but 7 years is a big commitment to pay for what soon be his decline.
