On this week's Blind Pig, the BGO crew discusses great college offense, the disappearance of Washington's pass rush, and gushing Troy Aikman while generally being ecstatically happy about a great Commanders win!

Some records set during the incredible Bengals game...

  • Most 1st half points in 6 seasons (21)
  • Only NFL team since 2020 to score on every drive in multiple games (and Washington has done it in back to back games!)
  • 1st NFL team in the Super Bowl era to do it in back to back games
  • Jayden Daniels 21/23, 91.3% completion rate is the highest by a rookie in NFL history and a franchise record. Let that sink in.
  • Austin Ekeler passed Frank Gore for 24th all-time in receiving yards by a RB.
  • Austin Ekeler is the only undrafted RB in NFL history to have exceeded 4000 receiving yards.
  • Austin Ekeler is only the 2nd undrafted RB in NFL history to score 70 or more TDs.
  • The last time a Washington lineman scored a TD was in 1984 when Joe Jacoby scored.
  • Zach Ertz passed Vernon Davis for 11th most receiving yards by a TE.

Not a bad night's work!

One regret I do have about not being "live" with the guys is missing the chance to react in real time to their comments. For those reading this, if you do nothing else, please take the time to tune in at about 13 minutes to hear Paul talk about his real-time reaction to the game. He speaks truth ... for me, and I suspect for a whole lot of long-time fans of this team. Thanks for putting it into words, brother, and amen.

Suck it up, buttercup. 😘

Kickoff for me was at 3:15AM and I crawled to bed at 7AM after the Quinn and Daniels press availability. (Though I readily admit that there is no way I would do that for a pod appearance.) 😎

I have spent a fair amount of time over the past 2 games watching young Brandon Coleman. That kid has a real chance to be something special.

While it’s true that Sinnott has yet to be targeted…Trent Scott hadn’t either prior to Monday night. 😉

I don’t think there needs to be a concern with Sinnott yet.

Ertz is clearly the top pass catching option at TE.
Terry and a combination of 2 or 3 guys make up the no 2 at WR.
Ekeler has been a legitimate weapon to this point.

In reality Sinnott is somewhere around 4th or 5th options in this offense. The game plan is quickness and release right now, so I don’t think we are in a position to be progressing THAT far across the offense YET. It will come in time, but the offense is working. It’s not like we’re sputtering and we have a weapon on the bench watching it all happen.

Agreed about not sweating Sinnott not being a big part of the passing game. With how efficient the offense has been humming, it's ONLY been 3 games. Jayden's still growing, even with a game with only 2 incompletions. The offense will continue to evolve and grow, as well as Jayden as the year progresses. I also saw a play Orlovsky pointed out, that Jayden did go through 4 progressions, before finding Ertz as the 5th option. Pumped about our future with Jayden!

In the podcast, someone praised Kliff for shoring up shortcomings on offense during the week. I had noticed during the game that they made adjustments in-game before the half. They saw something wasn't working and they switched it up almost immediately. In this case, I think they came in planning to pound Robinson and Eklerer because it had proven so effective against the Giants. Well, Robinson wasn't having luck against a stacked line so they went to the air more, including on first down. It was good to see. So often in recent years, we would stick to the plan that wasn't working because we were determined to make it work or had no plan b. This week, Robinson was getting two yards a carry because the Bengals were selling out to stack the box so we changed it up.

It was great to see.

With all the flower throwing and adulation being showered on this team and their ROOKIE QB, I think it would be wise to temper any lofty expectations.
Monday night’s win was unexpected and it was a nice win but a few things to keep in mind.

Jayden Daniels had to have a historic performance by a rookie in order to win. A performance that no one has ever seen in league history in just his third game.
Now I’m not trying to paint with a broad brush but there is a lot of what’s left of the fan base proclaiming “We finally have a QB” “ He’s a franchise QB” or “Face of the franchise” etc.
Frankly, we have no idea who he is yet. Yes, the start is promising but I cringe at all the flowers and adulation being heaped on him this early. As Bill Parcells once famously said “ Let’s not get out the anointing oils just yet”. Anyone that has been a longtime Redskins fan knows all to well how a promising young player can go up in smoke in a heartbeat and disappear.Just sayin’…

With the offense on a roll with something like two games without a punt, let’s just understand that the offense has to play near perfect for this team to win because the defense can’t stop anyone right now.
Monday night, they were very fortunate to get one stop early, just enough to let the offense get ahead and then the team had to keep scoring just to stay half a step ahead. With the success the Bengals were having on first down, especially running the ball, I kept saying to myself “Please don’t let Zac Taylor wake up and start running the ball down our throat”, especially in the red zone, where for some inexplicable reason, they went pass happy.

I really have no idea if the defense can be fixed with the current personnel. Jon Allen seems to have lost a step and Payne seems that at times, he can’t be bothered to make a play. Outside of Newton, a rookie coming off injury to both feet, we don’t have much performance wise on the interior. And even then, we don’t know who Newton is yet.
When it comes to the middle of the field, one wonders if Wagner is washed as he is long in the tooth and right now, Luvu’s not showing the instincts that allow him to be in the right place at the right time. Jamin Davis has a hard time being active on game day and when he is, he’s only out there for a handful of plays. I think if Jordan Magee had stayed healthy, we’d be seeing a lot more of him than we currently see of Davis.
As far as Special Teams go, we’ll let me put it this way:
My 17 yr old son after seeing Seibert kick 7 fgs: So did the Redskins finally get a kicker?
Me : For now son. For now. You never know. Let’s see if survives the season.

You can call it PTSD from the Snyder years if you wish. I prefer to call it experience from being a long time fan.
Monday night was a nice win but there’s a lot of work to be done to get out of the NFL Wilderness this franchise has been wandering through for 30 some years.
Just think, we’re basically in year 25 of “ We need three more drafts to be good” fellas.
I’m still standing as a Redskins fan, I just need to see more on the field from the team as a whole.

At the beginning of the season, I think everyone was pretty much on the same page. This year was about development. It's about implementing systems and getting everyone on the same page, training up the rookies and seeing which vets are worth keeping. It's about figuring out where the true holes lie. This season was not supposed to be about W's and L's. I think that's still true.

Wins are a bonus.

I want to see Daniels, Coleman, Newton, Sinnott, Sinrastil, and McCaffrey continue to develop. I want to believe they will form a core that we can trust in. The wins are bonuses, they are also proof that we are moving in the right direction, but mostly they are bonuses. However, there's also one other group that needs coaching up and development and Boone chided me about it yesterday.... Fan faith.

The fact that I was as norvous as I was with 2:10 left is not healthy for this fanbase. I felt sure that prior to the McLaurin TD catch that if we went for the field goal try one of two things would happen: Siebert would miss for the first time or Cinci would storm down the field and tie the game. Even when we scored the (almost no way you can lose TD) part of me knew that Cinci would score a TD in no time and I believed that there was a damn high chance (statistics be damned) that they would recover the onsides kick and score the winning TD.

So as much as we need to develop Daniels and the rookies, we need to retrain ourselves into positivity. This realism is just self protective cynicism that will take a lot of time and love to heal. So, while I still believe that this year is about development and not wins I also think that we need to learn not to say "but" after a good play or a win.

I do think there is a lot of media-driven ‘anointing’ going on, but I don’t think anyone on the pod has that mindset.

I said it as simply as one can. Just like we said after Tampa Bay, it’s just one game. One game NEVER means anything in and of itself. You are 100% right. That being said, anyone not extremely impressed with what we are seeing from Jayden Daniels just isn’t paying attention. Does it mean he’s a future HOFer or even a franchise QB for certain? Nope. But we’re seeing what you want to see so far.

I disagree on Luvu. I think he (and Chinn) have played like beasts so far. I am not sure what Wagner has left.

There are sane people who follow this team???

Word of the week goes to ST for tertiary.

Cincy is a questionable call away from defeating the Chiefs, definitely a solid win over a good team. On offense we looked confident, played confident, on defense we looked like a defense that knows it has holes and is afraid of those being exploited. As far as Allen goes, he might just have finally hit the wall and as Bob stated it happens to all of us, some sooner than others. Payne, he came out on several rotations looking completely gassed, I think his conditioning isn't where it needs to be, maybe that's Allen's issue as well, not enough live action and cardio in the off season. With Arizona, who knows what to expect, Ekeler is back in VA with a concussion, I'm presuming he's not going to play which definitely is a big loss. Interesting the team is spending that much time out west, gives the body time to adjust but also will need to adjust back to EST when they return for the Browns . I haven't watched enough of AZ except the highlights to have any iota of what to expect but I think the offense cools down for some reason (I don't have a justification for it) and we end up at a 20-17 Skins win. Now with that prediction we will actually double that point total to 40 just to spite me like the football gods have done in FF and pickem this year.

I was confused. I was always told "What we do works" - I am not used to this concept of "adapting" - it will take some adapting.
In all seriousness, I do not believe that DQ was their first choice for HC, but I do think they had a plan on how they wanted to evaluate coaches and it took time that they didn't end up having for some of their other options. I also believe them when they said that DQ had the mentality they wanted - they emphasized this: he was ready to "learn from mistakes." He himself said his coaching staff was built around guys ready to learn from mistakes. They have mostly talked about "past" mistakes, but I think it applies between games, intra-games, and we've seen it. True accountability.

Ron's character was good, but he truly lacked accountability for mistakes with himself and his staff. We see the difference early. Hopefully they can make the good times last, but we'll see. The league will certainly adapt too.

I don't know what to make of the NFL after 3 weeks. So many upsets and major injuries (49ers, Dolphins) that have taken some teams down.

I came into the season thinking this team should win 7 games if Daniels stays upright and some of these younger players/picks we brought in start to emerge.

But how do we get to those 7 wins?

Most fans and media go to the 'weakest' teams on the schedule and point to wins when in fact teams looking back are likely to get 1 or 2 wins a year that no one expects and loses a number of games they 'should' win or be competitive in.

Don't worry, I am sure in either the second Giants game or a game against another last place team Washington will stub it's toe and take a loss.

Win or lose, Monday night showed that Daniels is ahead of the other rookie quarterbacks, playing with arguably less talent overall on offense.

It was good though to see Baptiste, Coleman make solid contributions and see us get maximum value from vets like Ekeler and Ertz.

Does anyone have the clip of Quinn bearhugging Terry during the Cincy game after one of Terry's catches? My wife missed that and for some reason I can't find it anywhere so now I'm wondering if I dreamed it.
