BGO Blind Pig: Week 15 at Los Angeles Rams

The rumor yesterday on ESPN was that Belichick is out after this season. The owner has already made the decision, it's just a matter of HOW the departure is going to be handled given the level of success the team had from 2001-2020.

I can't think of the last legendary coach that went to another team and won anything of note.

Parcells came very close after rebuilding the Jets from 1-15 into a 11-5 and 12-4 team that went to the AFC title game twice.

Holmgren came close in Seattle after leaving Green Bay but was younger than some of these others.

Gibbs didn't win the second time around. Jimmy Johnson didn't win. Ditka didn't win.

I don't see Belichick with full control doing a better job of drafting in a burgundy and gold sweater rather than a blue and silver one.

And THAT is the at the crux of the recent failure in New England.

The Patriots ability to draft the Willie McGinnests, Ty Laws, Vince Wilforks, Logan Mankins, Rob Gronkowskis, etc. is GONE.

Their recent draft pick history is little better if better at all than Ron Rivera's.

And Belichick is not going anywhere just to coach players someone else gives him.

Any GM hire will be a guy that is taking orders from Bill just as Mayhew is taking orders from Ronnie Ron :mad:

Agree with the losing pretty with Sam performing well but would not be upset at seeing him somehow drag the team to a win either.

I'm all in on Sam. Want to see them get him some protection and a running game to help him out. Just do not understand the segment of the fan base that wants to willingly toss him out and start all over.

Reid couldn't get it over the line in Philly though. He got close but couldn't close, and I think that is what BD means.

I can think of coaches who had great second acts with other teams but no one has won it at two different stops.
 
Not to mention, I think Reid is a very good coach, but does he get KC to the Promised Land without Mahommes? His first 5 seasons he took them to the playoffs 4 times but never got past the Divisional round. Since Mahommes arrival, he's taken them to the Super Bowl 3 times, winning 2 of them.

It's easier when you have a future HOFer under center.
 
Which is why what Joe Gibbs did here his first time around is so special but yet when the national media debates the NFL's greatest coaches, he rarely gets a mention.

Always a head-scratcher for me.....
 
My honest opinion on Gibbs is that MEDIA types ignore his accomplishments because the team didn't have a sexy Joe Montana like quarterback winning 3 Super Bowls with the team.

It's difficult for frontrunning media wags to get excited talking about Doug Williams and Mark Rypien.

For former NFL players and coaches Gibbs gets a lot more respect.

You can say the same thing about every SB winning HC not named Gibbs and Billick.
 
I agree. Kansas City is one of the most quarterback centric teams to have won, even in this era of parity. A look up and down their roster doesn't give you a long list of pro bowlers or all-pros. Mahomes is not only the drink but what stirs it.
 
So the Howell question increases. He still makes some great plays and he was abused by drops and that horrible non PI, but is he seeing pressure and rushing throws now? Have all the hits impacted him? I'm not sure. I still think he can be the QB for us, but Brissett doing better worries me a bit. Mind you, perversely, that awful goal line effort gives me some peace of mind that it is still more about the line than the QB.
 
It’s easier to come in as a veteran backup and do well for a stretch because the defense didn’t prepare for you all week.

So, I take that with a grain of salt.

The defense is still atrocious.

152 yards and 5.6 per carry average for Williams?

Give me a break.

Typical slow start for the 53 men today.

The ALMOST TD throw Jacoby hit to Terry, Sam had an identical situation where he had time and was able to make the throw. The difference is that Terry got interfered with, the throw was perfect had he been able to play the ball, and likely also results in a TD.

There is no more Howell question. His career as an NFL starting QB is over after this season. That Rams game was a total debacle.

If Howell is not careful, he's going to end up out of football just like Wentz.

It was like night & day when Brissett replaced Howell. The irony is that if Brissett had played the whole season he might have saved worthless Rivera's job.
 
Nowhere in NFL History has a backup Qb came into a game and played well.

All humorless trolling aside, it's pretty clear to me at this point that the incoming regime is going to be looking long and hard (that's what she said) at our QB position heading into 2024.

Those of us who have endured the wasteland of QB play in Washington first-hand over the last generation understandably have taken Sam's flashes of brilliance to heart this year, and grown attached to the guy. I'm not so sure qualified (we hope) objective eyes from the outside will find his play overall this season good enough to hitch their wagon to going forward, though.

Sam has shown the dirty word "potential" all year, and inarguably has looked the part of legit starter for stretches. But he has also struggled enough in stretches to force the new regime's hand. They are going to have to decide early on if they're going to roll the dice in 2024 hoping he's shown enough to NOT perhaps use a top pick on a QB. Sitting here this morning, it's not hard to envision an incoming GM/HC combo having some reservations about standing pat.
