On this episode of BGO Blind Pig, the guys celebrate one of the most impressive 3 days of NFL Free Agency in Washington fan memory and review our bolstered position groups. Peters and Company are killing it and may not be done yet.

Great job, guys.

I really like the Wagner signing.

a) it's a proven LB who potentially has the ability to come in and be what London Fletcher was for this defense - it's lifeline.

b) leadership - guy who has been there and done that and knows how to be a pro in the NFL. As well, a guy like Jon Allen can certainly benefit from Wagner and seeing how a pro's pro carries himself. "I'm tired of this sh*t" to me isn't how you lead in tough times. Now I am not trying to sit here and bash Allen as a leader, but let's face it, the guy has won nothing in this league. I think that a guy like Wagner will command a certain level of respect that is tough to earn for a guy like Allen who hasn't accomplished what Wagner has in this league. A different voice is needed to lead among the players on that defense.

Great point by Galdi on his pod this morning. Wagner and Luvu played almost every defensive snap in 2023 for their respective teams. If they do that here, where does that leave Jamin Davis? Some rumors that Whitt is going to use him in more of a hybrid role as a pass rush specialist due to his physical explosiveness. Gonna be interesting to watch.

And boom goes the dynamite…

Why an old dude turned his W cap around like a kid and gushed on a podcast last night.

Bobby Wagner mic'd up.

Frankie Luvu review.

Some folks in the NFL media were cutting on the signings of Luvu and Chinn, saying the Carolina team stunk in 2023 and there was no way to comp these players playing in a real defense.

Really?

I thought that was what the best GMs do every year. Grab younger and capable players off poor teams and give them a chance to shine on better units.

I think some of these folks forget how Baltimore, the Eagles and 49ers acquire players.

In regards to the Qb talk on the pod:

So we draft a QB at 2…why not keep Sam and let him, the pick and Mariota fight it out? A true Qb competition, may the best man win, scenario?

Adam Peters just came from an organization that did just that with Trey Lance and Brock Purdy The best man won regardless of draft position. I’m hopeful this staff has that same mentality.

In all honesty, that’s the way it should be if the idea is to put the best (at every position) on the field.
Besides, if the guy at 2 can’t beat them out, does he really need to see the field?(sit and learn)

Enjoyed the pod as always. Keep up the great work!

That was essentially my take, at least insofar as Mariota vs Howell. Thinking it makes sense to let them battle it out for either QB2 or bridge/temporary QB1 until the rook is ready.

Something Hoffman just said on a vid I'm watching is that we have the cap space to let it play out and, if we decide Sam is the guy, cut Mariota at the end of pre-season. He is on a deal with $6 million guaranteed. I'm not sure that happens but I think I'd be happier if we let it play out to see who is best.

The other thing I thought of last night but in the interest of time left unsaid - what might a player like Sam have been worth to the Jets last year at the end of the 1st quarter in the 1st game? They are paying Rodgers a king's ransom and Sam is cheap right now. Sam is also better than anything else the Jets have on the roster at the position.

Howell, if ultimately moved, will be worth more later than sooner.

If Howell were 3-4“ taller he would be a better QB than Drake Maye. To bad you can’t teach height.

Howell’s the same height of Joe Theismann. Joe did ok.

True but Joe played for arguably the best coach in the history of the NFL who had/made an assortment of stylistically different QBs reach high levels.

I think the Jets would have made the playoffs if they had traded for Jacoby Brissett before the deadline.

LOL - had to post after comments in the pod about Quinn and how he is obviously thought well of in league circles.

And for the record, because my comment to Brother Neo may have been a bit obscure without context ... recognizing that I'm the one who posted the dubious historical success record of QB's taken with the #2 overall pick, and now seemingly teasing him for having taken it to heart, I went for a Sidney Friedman classic.

M*A*S*H is still my favorite sitcom of all time and one of my favorite shows. Great quote, brother.

So would you say we have a "plethora" of signings?? Normally this is a quality vs quantity argument in FA but I think we struck a very nice balanced middle ground so far.
