The Pigs discuss tons of breaking Commanders news this week, dissect the not-so-final 53 man roster and surprise cuts, and try to make the case for signing 41 year old retired RBs.

I would offer that the credit for the cap space the team had/has goes to Dan Snyder and Josh Harris more than to Ron Rivera.

Snyder because he was cash poor and couldn’t/wouldn’t spend. Harris because he facilitated the movement of Young and Sweat instead of extending them.

I am in complete alignment with John’s view on the team’s improvement up the middle on both sides of the ball. Interior o-line, tight ends, linebackers, and safeties added to an already solid defensive tackle group will pay dividends.

That said, future improvements for the team will be highly dependent on improving the overall quality of the talent on the perimeter. Talent at receiver, corner, defensive end, and offensive tackle must be considerably elevated. I think that Armstrong will be a nice player at DE and Coleman gives me some hope at OT but outside of that, with the exception of McLaurin, those groups are not what I would call talented NFL units.

We maybe should have added Kaz Allen to the shortlist of surprise cuts. It felt like they were trying to give this guy every opportunity to fight his way into the roster. However, at some point, I guess there needs to be production and there just wasn't.

I had his name written down Paul. Most fans thought they’d keep him based on Kingsburys comments of late.

I don't think I've ever seen such a violent teardown of a roster. It began with signing dozens of free agents, proceeded to the draft, and continued through (at least yesterday). We've seen a lot of coaching and even Front Office turnover. I've never seen this degree of roster churn in one season. Have to admit I mostly like it, but am surprised.

I'd guess in being as aggressive as they are that some mistakes will be made. Some young players with unrealized potential will surface elsewhere or steady vets will be missed on a team to thin on talent, but there is no question that we are undergoing a top to bottom rebuild. That they want to start as fresh as possible and that they believe what was left behind contained foundational rot and mold so that even some some of the good lumber needs to be looked on with skepticism.

There was an interesting discussion on sports radio I caught a few minutes of yesterday while driving. It basically asked, "If you graded the current wide receiver group a B- what would you grade it with Dotson still aboard?" My initial thought was a B, but all the guys on the radio said that they would still grade the unit a B-. In other words, his absence would not elevate this group at all. I think they're probably wrong, but maybe not by much. In regards to this post, I think that Dotson move represents a key factor. I think there were Washington vets we could have re-signed or kept, their are players cut who could have stayed, but how much better would a guy like KJ Henry make us? Likely, the answer is that we'd be treading water. We'd be keeping a player who would max out at "okay."

Now, "okay" is not a bad thing. You need your blue collar players. You need steady, reliable, hard workers. Still, when looking at the cuts and many of the surprise Rivera draft pick cuts which of them would you keep because you believe they would elevate the team? Which do you think could transcend "okay?" And in sports is okay actually harmful? Does it lead you into that treading water of 8-8-1 that we've been in since Gruden and through Rivera?

So while I'm a little surprised that we gave up on some guys too soon, I'm not upset. Still, who'd a thought that Peters would look at our roster and think, "You know what? Get your marshmallows, boys, because I'm going to start a bonfire."

Yeah, nothing truly shocking about the cuts. Even guys that we could have kept - Kaz Allen, Turner, etc -- even if they made the team, they would have been no lock to get much playing time.

Also, feel free to join my kid and comment on the youtube upload.

Kingsbury deciding to tag the Deebo name in discussing Kaz Allen will live in infamy with me, right up there with Rivera and his Super Bowl ring comment.

It ain’t that hard to say that he is intrigued by the possibility of using his explosiveness from different positions on the field without (not) comparing him to one of the best in the game. Talk about the kiss of death. 🤣

(Yeah, a bit petty on my part but, hey)

It’s right up there with suggesting you can find a HOF QB on day 3 of the draft because of Tom Brady.

I think a rotation of Armstrong and Fowler on the edge will produce good results in 2024.

Quinn’s use of personnel reminds me a bit of Petitbon, he’s not afraid to pull guys in and out based on down and distance and particular matchups to get greater productivity from his unit.

It appears we have elected NOT to sign anyone off the waiver wires. They are beginning to add a couple to the practice squad. I’ll admit I’m surprised but we may have a trade or two still in the works?

Agreed. I think Peters is looking to a trade of Ridgeway or Mathis to get an offensive lineman.

Trade: Washington is sending DT John Ridgeway III to the New Orleans Saints, per sources.

I'm not sure what's going on now.

Are we already tanking for next year's #1?

I'm serious. This is getting confusing to me now.

I think we now have four seventh round picks.

Does that account for the one we traded for the new kicker?
Maybe not. I'm a little confused. There was also a post that made it sound like we traded Ridgeway for a six, but also gave away a 7. I thought we got a 6 and 7. So, I'm not absolutely sure what's going on.
