Here's the most obvious point of them all (and I think this was alluded to in the pod by Derek)... Let's assume we find ourselves in two 4th down situations... If you are going to argue that 'going for it' on those two 4th downs is foolhardy, then you'd better be prepared to guarantee those two FG attempts are successful. You can't miss if that's your argument. The maximum benefit is 6 points, and again, that's assuming nothing goes wrong. And God knows, with kickers, nothing ever ever goes wrong.
On the other hand , when going for it, we could keep drives alive that could potentially result in 16 points. Yes - that's not likely. But a 7 point end result from 2 potential drives? Now that doesn't sound impossible. And we've shown all season long, it is QUITE possible we deliver a TD on one of those two opportunities.
It's a trade off. 'Take the points'? Fine. But it's just 3 points. 'Go for it'? It's a risk, but the reward is greater.
I think their are justifications and rationales for either decision. But those that argue 'going for it' is 'irresponsible' or 'foolish' completely miss the point of the strategy.
