BGO Blind Pig: Can Washington get right vs. the Raiders?

I wanted to clarify one thing I said last night after doing a little digging. Generally speaking, orthopedists will refer to knee injuries as 'sprains' but most of the time, the injury is a 'tear'. Now a 'tear' can be very slight - so not every 'sprain' represents a season-threatening injury obviously. Where my statement was a little misleading is that there is also the possibility that a ligament was 'stretched'. A ligament isn't designed to 'stretch' so even that kind of an injury involves some micro tearning of the ligament. That's not a good thing either, although it's certainly preferable to an actual identifiable tear.

Anyway - I think the most important aspect of the whole 'what to do with Jayden' conversation is that they need to do everything they can to safeguard his long-term health. You don't want to throw him back out there (even if it is the most minor of 'sprains' with no discernible tear) because a minor injury can become a major one if you make the wrong decision.

I think if the sports physicians feel his knee is close to 100%, he'll play. Anything short of that and we are probably looking at him taking a few games off.

I would prefer to just let Mariota start this game, if we need JD to beat the Raiders this team is in a ton of trouble imo. I don't like the idea of near 100% or close to, 100% only when it comes to playing an opponent of the Raiders caliber this early in the season, unnecessary risks can turn into nightmarish results.

Part of the problem comes in I would think from the fact Daniels is hyper competitive and wants to play and there is a lot of momentum towards him getting out on the field unless he is clearly unfit.

I would err on the side of safety and play Mariota.

The Raiders are coming across country on short rest and Mariota would be facing his former team, which is a high motivator for him.

He has the mobility to avoid the rush and pick up some yards if he has to.

He played well last year against Carolina and Dallas when they decided to blitz him on passing downs.

This week is EXACTLY the reason you pay a backup $10M to come back and take the #2 job.

Most teams don't have a guy like this. They have Jake Haener or Desmond Ridder.

If Daniels is out for that length of time 😫. Not saying it’s not possible, but Yikes. We have ATL and LAC back to back road games after the Raiders.
