A Grumpy Fan's Take - Carolina game

Haskins has one, and only one, plus. He can throw a pretty ball (on occasion).

He has no leadership characteristics, no intangibles, and he doesn’t understand the nuances involved in the position.

It’s now past time to cut bait and I doubt there is one player on the team that would disagree.

well, I think that is what is happening. I hope they don't even dress him this week.

Alex is on track to start (hopefully) and Taylor is the back up.

Yesterday proved that this team has a long way to go in terms of knowing what it takes to execute and win in the biggest of moments. They were unprepared for a loosey goosey 4 win Panthers team and it showed in all three facets of the game. A hard lesson, but a needed lesson for a growing team. Long term, we will be better off for what transpired yesterday. I personally suspect that the Redskins will be far more prepared for Philly next week, give a good overall performance when people are down on them, and with hopefully a few breaks, win a tight contest on the road.

On another note, yesterday made is crystal clear to me that there is a lot to do in terms of roster construction. Guys like Cam Sims, Reaves, Thomas, etc., are nice stories, but we have several depth players in starting roles right now that just can't be sustained over the long haul. As much as we want to believe we are just a QB away, we really are not. 2022 is a realistic target for this roster to compete in the conference if the defense continues on its current trajectory and the offense spends some time next season catching up to speed.

As we currently stand, if we beat Philly next week, we are no different than any of the past 3 or 4 versions of the Redskins who have made the playoffs - there for the ride but not good enough to win games in the playoffs.

I do believe we can beat the Rams or Seattle now. Maybe the Bucs.

we need to dial up a pass rush that is consistently there. other teams seem to be able to do that with us.

Just imagine what this team could do in a 2nd half where they aren't immediately down 13 or 20-0. Talk about consistently putting yourself in a terrible position - it's mind-boggling that we've had a chance to win any of these games coming from that kind of deficit over and over again.

we have ZERO opening drive touchdowns this season. It is week 16 and we haven't even gotten THAT right.

Kind of shocked about that stat. We can't put together an opening drive? A drive where you can have all of the plays set?

Our defense is really coming on. But you cannot win - even with an incredible defense - if you can't put 21 points on the board consistently. Whether it's Alex Smith or Heinicke, they have got to have some help. With a gimpy Gibson and likely not having McLaurin for any playoff appearances (just a guess but seems to be moving in that direction), some of these other players have got to start playing competently. Defense alone may keep us in a game, but it won't win them for us.

Yesterday looked like even the HC had a long way to go to learn.

Absolutely...for an offensively challenged team, in a scoreless game, you take that risk early in game and challenge the Moreland INT to give your team the ball at midfield. If we score first yesterday, the entire game changes and Turner possibly keeps Gibson engaged which gives us an even better advantage. One thing leads to another though and it just snowballed and got out of control.

With Rivera, you take solace in the fact that he has done it before. He has experienced success and knows what it takes. You give him the benefit of the doubt.

There is not one player on the roster that can legitimately say though that they know what it takes to truly win at this level.

There is a HUGE maturation process that this team will need to go through even once the talent level is improved. That will require patience on our part as a fan base.

Look no further than the Capitals as a firsthand example.

There is being talented enough to win, and then there is knowing how to win and exerting the required will to win.

I heard that Gibson was on the sidelines during the game "walking" but I didn't see any real reason why he was used so poorly.

Haskins: Held out hope the light would come on and he’d get it. Thought having Alex for a mentor would help him in the same way he helped Mahomes. Thought, on his last chance..given how he played in the second half last week, that he’d come out and play like he had something to prove. Little did I know he was incapable of proving anything positive.

Scott Turner: Years ago, vs the NYG, watched as Stephen Davis had 2 tds and 100 yds at halftime and a double digit lead only to give Davis three carries the whole second half. So it didn’t really surprise me that Scott abandoned the run in the second quarter as the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

The Sims: Cam is a teamer/5th WR. Sims Jr -His route running and speed is useless when combined with those skillet hands

The Refs- bent the team over and worked em over good. So in other words, Redskins got their usual Sunday Service.

Rivera- this is his first year here. Was always going to be a feeling out process this season.
As upset as we all are about yesterday, they are playing meaningful games in December after being a three win team last year. That ain’t bad.
Going to be a very interesting offseason with who’s shipped out and who’s brought in...

We did get away from the run game, but honestly, show me an OC in the NFL who falls behind by 20 points in a big game who's not going to start passing a ton. I think it's just a natural tendency. I don't know how smart it would've been to continue to give Gibson 90% of the carries when he is coming off turf toe. I fault them for (to an extent) abandoning the run, but it was McKissic and Barber who barely got any plays in the 2nd half and who could've helped us. What really killed us was the 8 minute drive we gave up to start the 2nd half. Once we finally got the ball back, that felt like we were in panic mode the rest of the way.

we got away from the run game before halftime even. Barber had a punishing run where he laid out the safety....and never ran again.

if you run the ball 15 times total in a game with an undertalented QB like Haskins you are just asking for problems.

Got away from the run long before 20-0 happened.

That long drive certainly did not help Turner's cause, but I would argue that if you stay within your offensive gameplan and possibly get the game to 20-10 by the end of the third quarter, everything is still in play and things are still within reach. Especially considering that your defense can legitimately force the opponent into three and out situations. Gibson and the run game was your best chance of success and we opted for becoming one dimensional with a QB who was in over his head. It all sounds like 20-20 hindsight, but I have always believed in extending the game as far as you can and staying true to who you are offensively gives you the best shot at success on Sunday.

On a side note, great discussion here! Really enjoy all the takes.

I don't really disagree DP. Gibson was ripping off 6 and 7 yd runs at a time. I agree we never should've gotten away from it. I'm not sure I would've pounded Gibson even as much as they did in this game knowing how important it will be to have him the rest of the way. McKissic did an admirable job filling in during his injury and we easily could've split their carries. Barber and McKissic combined had half of Gibsons total carries.

I have mentioned this before...

If Scott Turner wants to go crazy and throw 50 times a game, knock yourself out and do it. Just make sure you have Rodgers or Mahomes wearing your team's colours. There is nothing wrong with going off script and doing that if circumstances dictate such, provided you have an amazing QB. We tried it with a guy that will possibly be out of the league in 2021. The one thing we couldn't afford to do yesterday was put the game in Haskins hands and Turner took the bait.

I disagree.

I am often critical of Scott Turner but I think he's calling games like yesterday because he has absolutely no trust in his QB. He gets cute because he's trying to outsmart the defense while trying to limit mistakes from the QB position. Alex doesn't have an elite arm, but we've seen him push the ball down the field into the intermediate zone when necessary. When we have asked Haskins to do that he throws up on himself.

The other part is that I don't think it's crystal clear that there is a lot to do in roster construction. Adding a legit no. 2 wideout pushes everyone else down into a more manageable role.

You mentioned Reaves, but he's still 24 and has appeared in 19 games, most of which were on Special Teams. He's still contributing meaningful minutes because of the fact that we've lost our 2 starting caliber safeties to injury. This defense is even BETTER with Landon Collins and Deshazor Everette.

There are a couple names I fall back to every time I look at our roster and think we're light years away from any talent.

Austin Reiter - Drafted 222nd, 5th pick in the 7th round of the 2015 draft. He jumped up and down between our active roster and our PS never logging an actual snap at C for the team. In September of 2016 Cleveland signed him. In September of 2018, KC claimed him off waivers when Cleveland cut him. Guess who won a ring and started in 15 games last season?

Guess who else won a SB ring last year for the same Chiefs team. Bashaud Breeland. He did it with 2 interceptions.

My point is that you don't need all pro players at every position... you need difference makers that are surrounded by capable players. We have 3 capable WRs on the roster that are good enough to be NFL players and can help you when needed, but don't necessarily need to be starting. Adding Allen Robinson or Corey Davis or Will Fuller (though his injuries worry me) allows the Sims of the the world to be a 3rd / 4th WR facing the 3rd / 4th CB or LB in coverage. They instantly become better because they're not going up against a starting CB anymore. We tried to get Cooper (man you wonder if he's not kicking himself now) and that would have made our WR room arguably top 5 in the league. The whole offense is markedly different with a single piece.

We have been VERY good in the draft lately, so to expect that continue is fair, we have a good amount of money available as far as the cap goes, and that number could very easily go UP if Alex decides to retire. Top 20 QB play and another difference maker and we're talking about a legit team when you consider the injuries and what we have coming back.

in the loss to SF he asked Haskins to throw 55 times. Does ANY QB throw that much in the game?

Seattle?

Not when you're winning... The gameplan drove me up a wall too
