A Era of Redskins Football Comes to a End

Too much unwanted drama. From the beginning, I knew we were in trouble when he came in and first thing he tried to do was "brand" himself. He didn't get the fact that brands are not anointed, they are earned first, if at all. All he seemed to care about was his so called brand. That's why Kirk is going to be here and succeed for a long time.

I'm no huge RG3 fan either, but to be fair, didn't Kirk immediately brand himself with the trademark application of "You Like That", along with said T-shirts printed ? lol

You are correct. It all comes down to one thing. Winning. When you win, everyone loves you. When you lose, everyone hates you. In many ways, when you win, you are almost invincible. When you lose, there is nothing you can do right.

Griffin did plenty that contributed to why it didn't work out with the Redskins. But the moment fans and most likely teammates turned on him was when he started losing.

Sadly, I can see you making an almost identical post about Gruden in a year or two.

How do you figure? Gruden should've shut just about all his critics up this past year. He was right about the QB situation. He was right about lots of things. And the players (and apparently front office) respect him. I could give a rat's ass if fans do.

Maybe. But Cousins did that only to raise money for charity. That's a lot different than signing yourself up for every ad campaign possible before you've done a thing in the NFL. Hell, RG3 turned his frigging rehab into a TV commercial. I have no problem with any of that - if you can produce. And he did, for awhile. But that's the problem with thinking you're the Messiah. If you stop producing miracles on demand, the natives are going to get pretty restless.

Why does this always have to come down to some kind of competition? Griffin seems like a good enough guy at heart. Likewise Cousins. Griffin had his chance and now Cousins gets his. I will never really understand the bitterness with Griffin. QBs fail and/or move on to another team every season, in multiple instances. Griffin isn't a victim. He just couldn't cement his starter status and he got replaced.

Back to this ad campaign stuff...

So you're saying RG3 should have been turning down multimillion dollar endorsements with Subway, Adidas, etc. because Boone says he needs to prove himself first? After reading how a bunch of these players basically live off their endorsement money and save their salaries, I couldn't care less how many commercials he was in. Good for him for trying to earn some money.

Did the endorsements affect his play? I honestly have no idea and I don't think any of us can say for certain one way or the other. But let's not act like him doing endorsements was this big terrible thing that no other player in the league does.

I already said I have no problem with Griffin taking advantage of his situation. I was just expressing the opinion that when you do that to the degree RG3 did, you open yourself up to a lot of scorn if you ultimately don't succeed, whether that's fair or not. I think the suggestion that Cousins has hyped himself equally is pretty hard t support. Like I sad, I don't get why we have to choose a QB to support. It's bizarre. My core position all along has been that Griffin had numerous chances to seize permanent starter status and he couldn't sustain that. There may have been factors that weren't helpful in that respect including coaching, but I think some want to make him a victim and I think that's equally difficult to buy.

Don't forget he posted on Twitter, too. ;)

And Facebook and Instagram. Our athletes aren't allowed to do anything besides watch film and practice. God forbid they take 30 seconds out of their day and post on social media! Ain't nobody got time for that!

Yep, and that can affect a situation more than the other stuff.
Yucking it up on social media can let everyone know 'what's up' can be cool but it can also backfire if the guys in charge are evaluating mindset.

Sometimes it's best not to send subtle messages or give access to 'inner self', it can get ugly real quick.

Griffin does a lot of charity work as well and is very well known for his ties to vets in this country. Just because he is a bigger star than Kirk doesn't mean he didn't give just as much.

Gruden definitely got it right with who the better QB was. Problem is, he drove the ship to that conclusion all by himself and made sure the outcome fit what he wanted. Some call that cheating, some call that an advantage.
What are you basing that on? I think common sense suggests the QB decision was made by Gruden in consultation with his assistants and the general manager. Are you saying Gruden schemed all himself to undermine Robert so he could anoint Kirk?

I see Osweiler is signing with the Texans. This means RG3 will either be a Bronco or 49er.

First of all, sorry for taking so long to respond, been insane at work this week.

I hope you're right. If we finish 7-9 and 6-10 this coming year, I have a feeling some doubts will resurface.

I barely have time to read and post so I get it. I guess where I differ with some of you guys is not so much 'where we are' (I agree there are many areas we just aren't good enough yet in) but in the mindset that Gruden and this team is a finished product. It's a process. I know you guys *know* it's not a finished product, but you talk as if you expect the results of a finished product. Gruden improved a great deal last year. So did Special Teams, the defense (against all expectations), and most of the offense. That didn't happen in a vacuum, it was the result of all parties working together. The running game was not one of those areas. Okay - but so what? Rome wasnt built in a day.

Henry - you have stated you have zero confidence that Gruden will fix the running game (or words to that effect). Why? He did what most said he wouldn't or couln't do last year. He was right about our QB situation. He was right (so far) about Joe Barry. I'm just kind of surprised that he gets so little benefit of the doubt. I think he's earned a little more respect than given here. I don't believe though that that makes me an 'apologist'...

But hey, I'll be nice when all the doom and gloomers are proven embarrassingly wrong this next season when the running game improves dramatically or it doesn't and we break every Redskins scoring record and win the division anyway. And yes - I'm yanking your all's chain :)

You know what's the best thing about Griffin leaving?

Conversations like this one that stretch on and on about a player that in the end result did not achieve much of consequence will end and the focus will go back on the TEAM.

The Redskins were always about more than Griffin - Trent Williams, Ryan Kerrigan, Jordan Reed, etc.

But all that was obscured until the clouds parted during the 2015 season with Kirk's emergence.

What I like most about this offseason is the talk heading into 2016 is about Kirk AND his teammates and where we are going as a 53 man roster, not 'All in for Week 1' and the poster-board BS meant to sell sandwiches and sneakers.

Just curious... how was he right about Joe Barry?

The Barry pick was almost universally panned by everyone - including me. The guy had zero prior success as a DC and we passed or were unable to land a proven great DCs including Wade Phillips who I really wanted. I'm not saying Barry will be a great DC but our defense was greatly improved this past season, and that was despite secondary injuries that on most teams would've resulted in total defensive collapse. I think Barry showed, at least for 1 season, that he may be a lot better than any us gave him credit for being. Remains to be seen, but the Barry hire looks a lot better now than it did on day 1 and may turn out to have been a great hire. We'll see.

I'm still not impressed with the coaches you mentioned Boone. I'm still waiting patiently to see what happens but so far, nope not impressed. The roster improved dramatically in areas and THAT is what had the biggest impact IMO. I'll continue to watch and wait but the notion that the coaching was so awesome last year or that Gruden has been vindicated is not how I see it at all. We had a nice 8 game stretch that included losses to the only good teams on the schedule but that's hardly a vindication to me(especially when you consider one of our losses in the 1st half was to a team that fired their HC a few weeks later. And the book is still not closed on Griffin. It'll be interesting to see what he does with a coaching staff that actually uses him correctly and puts up a decent supporting cast around him...you know one that can give him more than 2.4 seconds before the sack is there. The ultimate irony in all this for me is the fact that the same people lauding Cooley for his honesty and telling it like it is were calling for Griffin's head when he did the exact same thing concerning the craptacular, record setting, bad line play we had those 2 years.
