Teams haven't been exactly knocking down his door to get him to play with them. What a great player, leader and should have really been influential with all of our younger players. He is the kind of guy you wish you could get to stay on as a coach.

Ertz is the older player that we could still back later in year. Should he be? Well we may not know that until we see the results. I am hoping this isn't needed but if it does, I hope we aren't saying similar to what you have started about Wagner. Ertz distinctly lostt a step but it didn't stop Jayden from looking for him over other receivers.
 
I don't think it's really knocking him. He was signed to be a coach on the field and a tone setter. I think in 2024, he did that. Going nerdy, I remember a comic book in which Karnak of the Inhumans went up against the Hulk. Karnak's superpower was knowing where his opponent's weak spot was and then devastating them with the perfect martial arts strike. When Karnak found the Hulk's weakspot he realized it didn't matter. He didn't have the physical strength to hurt the Hulk even if he struck his "Achilles Heel" Going back to football and Wagner, knowing what is going to happen doesn't help if you can't get there or can't conduct the defense so that your supporting players execute your plan.

Wagner was still good enough to "be in the right place" He probably was good enough to tell his teammates where they should be and what was about to happen, but the talent and coaching and overall football intelligence outside of him were so bad that no one could cover for him or take advantage of the fact that Karnak was telling them where to punch. In other words, Karnak was left on an island to punch the Hulk, but even though the blows landed (and he accumulated tackles) none of the hits mattered all that much.
 
Perhaps, the DC was a bit of a dimwhitt. However,, especially in 2025 it was apparent that even with his great football intelligence and instincts couldn't carry his reduced foot-speed which is more important now than ever.
 
One of the few things I have no question marks about is that our defense is going to be much better. Not saying top unit. But it’ll be solid.

The bigger issue being that Quinn continued trotting him out there knowing that every other team would take advantage of Wagner instead of getting younger player’s experience. Maybe he was tanking on purpose…
 
Reading the below quotes from the article linked below shows one of the big reasons I am so psyched to see the new look defense and all the players that seem so versatile:

I don’t buy any of it until we see it. That goes for “bad play”, too. Grain of salt.
 
Fair enough. As a fan, optimism costs me nothing. I’m okay wth feeling good about feel good news.

Mind you, I don’t disagree that I’m not placing any bets based on this report
 


Interesting. We’ve heard a lot about potential 3-safety looks under previous DC’s but never actually saw much of it. This does sort of feel like they’re trying to keep Quan’s athleticism on the field while limiting his area of influence a bit
 
Logan Paulsen says that Quan always looks amazing in the first day of installs and then gets worse. The implication he was not so subtley making was that Quan is a dumb player. When things are simple, he does well. As the defense adds complexity he gets lost.

Very true, and Grant used the caveat - knowing its OTAs and means nothing - when asking who stood out. Positive sign that Burks was one of the handful mentioned, but yeah, have to see it when it matters.

Oh yeah, definitely feels like they’re trying to find a way to salvage him at this point. The fact that he seemingly didn’t improve in year 2 of the same scheme last year, not a good sign

Yeah in real games he seems mostly lost.

Yup. WR's don't make a sudden "5th Year Leap" in figuring things out. I'll believe he'll be a valuable contributor only when it actually happens. Anything else is just hyping yourself up to only be let down at the end.
