2026 Commanders Training Camp

I am a little surprised if they fired the TEs coach for a DUI. I wonder if there is more there (perhaps an alcohol problem that is bleeding into work in other ways?). Most of us have probably at a minimum put ourselves at risk for a DUI at some point in our lives. That's just an unfortunate truth. I'm not downplaying it - getting behind the wheel after drinking is a terrible decision. It just seems more like a lapse in judgement that someone could learn from vs. some horrible indictment of character to me. So I'm always a little surprised to see someone immediately lose their job over it.
The charges were: Driving while intoxicated (first offense), refusing a breath/blood test, and obstructing or resisting an officer without force.

I agree with you, I found it strange at the beginning. But I think that last bit there, "resisting an officer without force" might have been the kicker.

That's wild speculation on my part, but maybe it was just the compounding of bad decisions which the team couldn't live with.

Certainly seems like there was more there than meets the eye.

Evidence? My eyes. I didn’t say he has poor vision, he’s not a disaster. I can tell you from watching him play that it’s not a great strength of his though, he’s average at best, and if it was better his explosiveness might be special. As it stands he really needs to brush up the rest of his game to make up for the fact that he’s missing some opportunities. Because when he does catch that daylight, he’s gone.

I agree with this. Bill has great speed, agility, and a lot of heart, but I also remember him missing holes or not following blocks well, so his vision could be better. That plus his fumbles, as well as questionable pass pro and receiving ability, could limit him unless he improves.

I can only go on what I have seen. And I'll never be convinced that Allen is as explosive at JCM. He looks more like BRob, a big back who will move piles but won't provide explosive plays. Still being the all time rushing leader at Penn State is incredibly impressive given their list of RBs.

I’m not sure I agree with this. I’ll grant Kaytron Allen lacks blazing speed and can be a bit of a bruiser, but BRob is the wrong comparison. If you watch Allen’s tape you will see his greatest strength is the way he finds holes and follows blocks, call it vision and patience. I don’t think BRob had that.

I agree with you. There were times when it looked like a play was opening up somewhere and he ran directly into the back of a blocker. Other times, he hit the hole clean and it was really special. I think the word I would use is inconsistent. Sometimes really good, sometimes really not.

The one thing I hold out hope for is he played one game in college his last year, so maybe he just needed some reps and another full off-season to get back into the groove. skinsinparadise was high on him coming out of college. I don't know if he showed the same in college as last year. But I kindof expect not given how high SIP was on him.

I’m speculating, but I suspect this team has especially low tolerance for any kind of PR problems. I remember thinking this when they released Brandon McManus, and maybe that’s why we haven’t signed Diggs. This might be a wise policy given the need to repair the franchise’s reputation after the many scandals of the Dan Snyder regime.

That's very possible. Though there was somebody they signed who had some stuff in their past which wasn't a good look. I don't remember who it was, but I remember Galdi bringing it up. Also, didn't Lattimore have some priors?

Maybe it's different for coach vs. player. I'm not sure. I agree with Boone though, when I first heard he was fired for a DUI, I was like, "I get it. I might be fired for a DUI. But in the NFL? That seems harsh." So I think either it was one of the other charges or something we don't know that pushed them over the edge.

The statement of "we have parted ways and we have no further comment." was also rather terse.

My favorite part of yesterday's press conference. The question was something like, "Do you use social media as part of your evaluation process?" and both Adam and Quinn burst out laughing then compliment the reporter for the roundabout nature of the question. Everyone acknowledged "it" without defining "it." They burst out laughing about three times during that question/answer.

Unfortunately that last bit is not at all difficult to accomplish depending on the officer. Perhaps the team was waiting to view the body-cam footage, also something that can take more time than necessary to do depending on the agency.

I wasn't comparing Allen's vision to BRob, just his lack of explosiveness which resembles BRob.

As for the TE coach I had read the resisting an officer charge was a result of not agreeing to a roadside test. A Vikings assistant just went through a DWI, he was suspended for 3 weeks of camp. I'm still confused about all of this but we won't really know what the reason was.

Ironically, three players I was really high on before they got here—Jacory Croskey-Merritt, Chig Okonkwo, and Rachaad White—have skyrocketed with some fans and to an extent with the local media. I pushed all three during the draft or free agency, but now I think the hype has gotten a little out of hand.

Croskey-Merritt: His superpower is what happens once he reaches the second level. He's elusive in space, has legitimate home-run ability, and runs with an edge. He isn't quite the battering ram someone like Skattebo is, but he definitely has that "I won't be denied" mentality.

He's pretty much been what I expected as a pro. He runs with reckless abandon—for better and worse. He flashes big-play potential, but he didn't produce many explosive runs last season. He also wasn't much of a receiving weapon in college, and that has carried over to the NFL. Pass protection is another weakness. Unless he develops as both a receiver and pass blocker, I think it's fair to view him as one of the weaker starting running backs in the league. As part of a committee, though, I like him a lot. I just don't buy the idea that he's some hidden superstar. And let's not forget—he's already 25, which is on the older side for a young NFL running back.

Rachaad White: Really good pickup for the cheap price. He's an excellent receiving back, but only an average runner. So I disagree with the comparisons to TreVeyon Henderson. Henderson is a far more explosive athlete. White actually ranked near the bottom of the league in explosive run metrics last season. As a pass catcher, though, he's outstanding. He reminds me a little of Larry Centers—a back who could consistently make plays in the passing game but will rarely take it to the house. But he and Nick Cross IMO are their best under the radar signings -- not completely under the radar but they don't get the almost universal love that some others do.

Chig Okonkwo: I pushed hard for him throughout free agency. What I didn't expect was for some fans—and even some local media—to immediately crown him as a star the moment he signed. It's almost as if the Zach Ertz era has suddenly become a disappointment and Jayden now has his own Travis Kelce. I'm exaggerating to make the point, but not by much.

Chig is a good player. He has never been a great player. I think some people assume any good player automatically becomes great once he joins Jayden Daniels, especially considering the limited supporting cast Jayden has had. Compared to guys like Van Jefferson, Jamison Crowder, or Chris Moore, Chig looks like a superstar. But that's a pretty low bar.

What Chig does exceptionally well is create yards after the catch. That's his calling card. He's not an elite route runner, and there are still areas of his game that need refinement. I think he'll be a good addition and probably have a productive season. But the level of hype has gotten way ahead of what he's actually accomplished or how he's seen nationally -- not even ranked top 25 from scouts-exuectives. I honestly can't remember another player receiving this much hype before proving it on the field. Do I think he will be a superstar? Not sure. But I can see him energe into a top 15 type TE in part because the lack of other talent on the offensive side.

There have been a lot of good words on Allegretti's smarts, leadership and communications. Now, if he can handle bigger and faster interior DL we will be all set at starting C...

Regarding Amos, I sure hope the soreness is nothing of concern. We really need him fully healed and confident with his lower half.

Hoping our new TE's coach can share his wealth of knowledge and experience positively to our TE's. I'm thinking he may be able to help Sinnott learn to separate.

I want to push against this criticism of fans for a couple of reasons.

Of course, we expect Chig to be better with Daniels. Isn't that why we all wanted a franchise quarterback? Isn't that the whole point of having a franchise QB? To elevate players? Second, people forget that before Ertz was signed in Washington, his reputation was in the gutter. He was considered washed up and a has been. Most analysts and fantasy guys mocked us for even signing him. So Ertz pre-Daniels and with-Daniels was a different player. Maybe Ertz was revived because he didn't get to play with Willis and Ward? Maybe at his stage and age, he was barely an average player who Daniels turned into a good player. If so, why wouldn't we think a player like Chig would see a bump too when playing with a good QB for the first time in his career?

With Daniels, Ertz was targeted around 20% of the time. Chig's target rate is about 14% of the time. Given the wide receiver room, it is very likely that Chig will see more targets and it's not unreasonable that his target rate climbs to near where Ertz was. That alone, you'd think, would lead to Chig having better statistical production than in season's past... unless, Chig was not targeted because he's terrible at getting open. Still, circling back to the original complaint. A franchise QB is supposed to throw receivers open. He's supposed to make JAGs look okay, okay guys look pretty good, and good players play at their best.

1. When Biadasz was out in 2024, and whoever it was came in to play center (I don't remember who it was, D-something), Allegretti actually called the OL plays from his LG spot. I remember either Kliff or Quinn confirming that in a presser at some point. So clearly, they trust his communications.

2. I'm going to remain in panic mode off of a broken leg with soft tissue soreness until he's practicing fully for several days at a time with no setbacks.

JP said, and I agree, Amos might be the most important person on the entire team after Daniels. Some would argue Terry, and I wouldn't push back too much on that. But there are still MASSIVE questions as to whether Sainristil can hold up on the outside for a full season given his physical limitations with size. Douglas makes things much better, but Robertson is also tiny, and struggled last year playing outside. Amos being out forces people to play who maybe should not be on an NFL roster.

Kindof like last year when Terry and Noah Brown both were out, we had people playing who shouldn't be on a roster. Well, we might be only one step away from it at CB this year.
