Agreed. I expect substantial improvements on the defensive side. They have a year under their belt with the players, the players know what is expected and there were many player upgrades that were handpicked

My angst isn't that he shouldn't be given a chance, i feel he deserves it and last year with personnel issues wasn't enough of a chance.
I wasn't suggesting he shouldn't have been hired just displaying my concern for the run defense and i was more critical of quinn than whitt because his run defenses stunk in both dallas and atlanta.
Whitt deserves a chance to show hes not quinn but after last year the ice under his feet is getting thinner for me and I'd imagine quinn is not going to let him radically change his philosophy from what they ran in dallas which resulted in good secondary play with a lot of turnovers but horrendous run defense.
Im praying the big bodies helps but i dont have a ton of faith, at this point i think bad run defense is a byproduct of the philosophy that stopping the pass and creating turnovers ranks 1, 2 and 3 in order of importance, or at least it feels that way.

I mean, the defense will be better. As others point out, our CB’s last year to start the season were Forbes and BSJ.
Good coaches make their players better and there was no indication this has occurred. Their pass rush last season was not a problem, many stats back that up.
The pass rush win rate was 7th in the league

Our win rate metrics stack the NFL's best run-blocking, run-stopping, pass-protecting and pass-rushing players and teams.
They had 50 sacks, only 6 teams had more.
How is forbes doing with the rams?
Haven't heard much but their fanbase seemed pretty excited by what they were seeing from him last year in practice.

If an experienced DC came in here and struggled with an ass defensive roster, we’d be giving Quinn crap for hiring a “retread” instead of bringing in new ideas. You have to take a risk sometime, and based on resume and experience everyone (including the people who hired him) thought Whitt was ready and deserving of the opportunity.
We’ll see how that turns out, but seems pretty silly to act like assistants are never promoted to coordinators, where else would they come from? We’re in the discovery phase with Whitt but he was supplied with the worst secondary possible last season, so who knows.
I feel pretty confident that if Whitt is a whiff after 2-3 years, Quinn will bring in someone experienced to take over the improved defensive roster and do their thing. But there’s no way to know right now so acting like it was not an understandable hire when organizations do this all the time is weird imo
Mark Bullock who watches a lot of film seems really sold on Jayiln Lane. Good to hear.
Bullock, who I often agree with, not always, Haskins (RIP) being an example of that. Brian Robinson was another disagreement. He's usually very reasonable so am surprised he came up with this thought on Galdi's podcast. That is, they got rid of Robinson purely because of saving cap room. They will get 80% of the player Robinson is but at 20% the cost. It's one of the most ridiculous things I've heard this off season. And i mean it respectfully because I like Bullock, seems like a good dude.
They swallowed half or so of Brian's contract. So in a go all in season for the SB -- they are going with 80% of the running back Robinson is to save 1.5 mllion of cap room?

But I would say Brian was a sneaky divisive issue among the fan base and media. It doesn't shock me that Bullock was sticking to his guns even after it was clear that the team thought they can do better with who was on the current roster. Adam Epsten, does spot radio on the Fan, was trying to convince people Brian is better than fans think. Lynell Willingham was getting angy on air about the fans giving up on Robinson this off season, etc.
But back to Lane, Bullock said rewatching the games, he's been a savvy route runner and has impressed him. Too bad he's more of a slot WR. we desperately need outside receiver help.

There’s something I’ve noticed with some of the local media where they seem perfectly willing to talk about a players’ acknowledged physical weaknesses—not fast, needs to work on route-running, not strong at the POA, etc. But they’re more reluctant to make comments about the things that they might not feel comfortable evaluating on film themselves as journalists. Things like vision, seeing the field, reading the defense.
I kind of get it—a physical limitation is what it is, but a mental limitation feels more personal (and sometimes is a work ethic limitation instead, which is also very personal).
So, yeah. A lot of local guys are willing to say “Robinson is a tough guy who doesn’t have breakaway speed” but they aren’t always willing to say “he consistently misses holes and cutback lanes”. And maybe it’s because they don’t all see it, either.
I think with Robinson in particular you got four divisions.
A. Fans who thought as to eye test Robinson underperformed.
B. Fans who thought as to eye test Robinson underperformed and noticed a deeper dive into the numbers backed up that point.
C. Some in the media and fans thinking fans who fall under category A and B are too harsh on Brian.
D. Brian looks like a Marvel Movie hero, he's Derrick Henry light, he just doesn't have that breakaway speed and fans fault him for it.
So lol, its a real battle on twitter, talk radio, blogs, etc. More so than the typical player.
I think to me what makes Robinson a hard read is because from time to time he has moments of being Derrick Henry light if you just focus on this game or that game. But if you digest his whole career, he's more often than not a mediocre at best power runner.
But man some in the media get really defensive about him and just have the facts about him wrong and I wonder if that seeps to the fans. Beyond the guys I mentioned, Bram loves to say Brian killed it early last season. But reality is he did not. He was inconsistent from the jump.
I think part of it for some of the media is if you just look at Brian in camp, he looks like a dude who should be a Derrick Henry type. He's big. And he's fast enough for his size. But he doesn't play that way. I'll say thought he local media was divided on him. But Brian's supporters in the local media really back him big.
This makes sense, most people don’t know what they’re watching on a deeper level. So they get a lot of their more nuanced takes from the sites, posters, and writers they trust most. So there is definitely a trickle-down effect with stuff like that, which is why having informed beat writers and popular community twitter poster types is important

We had some back and forth on Lane after the pick was made. My initial quick review of him was not very favorable. Seeing him in preseason though, he looked legit to me and I’m really surprised to be saying this, but he looked good as an outside receiver to me. His routes looked crisp and showed the feel I thought he was lacking. He makes me feel a bit better if Terry were to go full moron and actually miss games. Still thin and wouldn’t enjoy relying on him, but he’s not McCaffrey out there either.

All I know is some fans were sure that Peters was making a mistake trading Sam Howell.
A year and a half later, Sam seems very entrenched as a depth quarterback not likely to see much action unless there are major injuries, etc.
He never matured into the playmaker that some thought he would become.
But to give him credit Peters I think saw his limitations and one of them was processing the game when under pressure. It's an intangible that most players are just not able to overcome with hard work and study.
In regards to Brian Robinson, let's be honest. If Kliff Kingsbury went to Peters and said he had to have Brian Robinson back in 2025 because he has great upside in this system, he would be here.
A GM doesn't go over the head of coaches and just get rid of a player the coaches think they can win more games with unless it's a contract or off the field issue, and those don't seem to obtain in this case.
What's important to focus on is not what Robinson does with the 49ers but what Merritt does with Washington.
If Merritt comes in and plays a surprise role as a late pick like Isaiah Pacheco did in Kansas City then the move was a good one.

The other thing to keep in mind, coordinators generally improve year over year for a while also. It's a new job for them, and coordinators have to learn to be coordinators also.
So because it's a new job for him, he needs a little bit of time to develop into the role also.
And he had a tough job. Could Bill Belichick done better with this personnel? Absolutely. How much better? Eh. Dunno. Bill couldn't make Forbes bigger. If he could have made St. Juste good he would be the best coach of all time. Oh, wait....

Galdi referred to BRob as essentially an average NFL starting running back. I think that's about fair myself.
It's not Galdi who is the Robinson guy. He's not. Galdi is the dude I've quoted showing Robinson's anayltics are subpar.
It's Mark Bullock on his show who said that the current RBs are 80% of what Robinson is but at 20% of the salary so he sees the move as about money versus RB play.
