Don't know I got to rewatch but its good to see pressures not just sacks. Keim has been beating the drums for weeks that this coaching staff is high on Newton, weird though they weren't giving him much as to reps.

Commanders second year defensive tackle Johnny Newton had a career day against the Cowboys on Christmas day. Newton played a season high 30 snaps (42.9% of the total defensive snaps) and crucially played those snaps in more situations that suit his game. So far this season, he’s been stuck behind Javon Kinlaw and Daron Payne on the depth chart and battled with Eddie Goldman for reps as the third defensive tackle. But with Goldman on injured reserve and Payne missing the Cowboys game through injury, Newton was elevated into a starting role and finally got some consistent reps in pass rushing situations.
The result was Newton had the best statistical output of his career to date. He was credited with three sacks, two solo sacks and two half sacks. Overall, he was credited with nine total tackles and was one of the leading performers on the defensive side of the ball. I’ve been hoping to see Newton get more chances down the stretch and I’m glad to see that not only was he given more chances, but he took them and showed why he deserves more.
...It wasn’t just the sacks either. Newton was able to generate pressure on other plays too, leading to opportunities for his teammates...

Newton had an average PFF grade for the day, but got it through extremes. He had a 82 pass rush grade yesterday (60 is average) and a 35 run defense grade. So his pass rush was good yesterday even if he was bad against the run.

Thanks for this, I was wondering about his run defence. We were getting gashed through the middle constantly, which sounds like bad DT play. I think it's Bulldog that says he's too light for a DT, I hope that isn't the case.

He is very small for a DT. Barely 300 pounds and short with smaller arms. It’s the Javon Hargrave archetype.
He can become a plus pass rusher but even getting to average as a run defender may be difficult.
DQ likes this DT body type for some reason and Odighizuwa was his guy in Dallas. One of the foundational issues I had with his scheme. He clearly didn’t learn here after the Packers gashed him in the run game in his last game as Cowboys DC

Generally smaller DT's with burst can slip into and through a gap better. But I'm not sure if Newton still has that burst he had in college.

Newton's medical issues from his last year in college and then after the draft show that he's not going to fill out his frame and will be in the NFL the player you see now in terms of size and strength.
One of the problems with Quinn's defense in recent years is that they feature smaller DL who are quick but are beaten in the run game against bigger, more athletic OL they face.
And at least in Dallas the organization was adding DL and OLB who could rush the passer and pressure, something we have been unable to do so far in Washington.

You’ve posted this 10 times in the last 6 months, you’re a broken record. He’s always been more of a tweener, but his foot issues aren’t chronic just because he had a compensation injury on the other foot after surgery on the first one. Yes, that was annoying. No, it doesn’t prevent him from adding 10-15 lbs (if that’s what the org wants and helps his game) as you keep stating over and over again. Unless you’ve got access to his imaging, or are secretly his doctor, please stop posting this shit over and over again like it’s confirmed fact. It’s an idea you have.
Developmentally he’s been stunted due to the injuries, and that may be a reason we shouldn’t have been so surprised he kept falling in the draft, all the way to us. It was surely a red flag. But there’s no evidence that his injuries impact his current ability to grow as a player. There’s no reason to believe his issues are chronic, plenty of big ass dudes recover from foot injuries.
It’s mostly annoying that the injuries, missing his rookie camp, and terrible defensive coaching have stunted him so much. Now he’s (maybe?) a late bloomer and we still don’t have a good idea what he is halfway through his rookie contract. That’s plenty to be annoyed about with this draft pick without making up stuff about his inability to add mass or whatever due to injuries he’s recovered from.

I rate this defensive coaching/scheme right up there with Joe Barry and Ron Lynn. It's just terrible. A housecleaning has gotta be coming to that unit, needs to be quick as hell, too. Wheels are no doubt starting to turn elsewhere

I have told this story before but...
When I was 'covering' the team for ES, at the end of the season, the PR Director came in and said 'we have a surprise for you as a thank you - we have lunch for you and all of the coaches ready downstairs'. I literally got to eat with Joe Gibbs and Gregg Williams right across the table from me. I tried hard not to fanboy but it was difficult. Gregg Williams is extremely personable and could not have been nicer. We were talking about how well he had been received in DC and he said 'It's the funniest thing... my teenage boy asked me the other day, hey Dad - how come everyone loves you here but in Buffalo you were just an asshole?'.
Joe Gibbs face turned red but he did laugh.
Anyway, I found I liked Gregg Williams a lot more than I would've expected. Not arrogant at all.

That’s hilarious. He definitely seems a like a character. It was hilarious how he ended his NFL career with that cover 0 blitz at the end of a game with the Raiders where Carr completed a bomb to Ruggs for the win.
He must have truly hated working with Adam Gase.
By the way, guessing that teenage son was Blake Williams who took over for his dad as DC of the Defenders and helped lead them to the XFL Championship

Notice though that he has been averaging ~60 since Week 9. I think that’s around when they moved him back to outside corner. That’s not great starting CB play but it’s solid and you may be willing to accept that for his playmaking.
The issue, however, is that for him to be successful as an outside corner, the next DC will probably have to play more of a zone heavy scheme vs a man scheme.
ExoDus84 Mikey does not training camp competition for a starting spot and a guy like Martin Emerson on a 1 year deal is a great candidate to challenge him.
