2025 Washington Commanders- All Things Defense

I don't care about the Forbes narratives. You could say what you want about his size, his draft profile, etc., but the fact is he was absolutely terrible here. Moving on from him, while a bit premature perhaps, was not some shocking event. He's found some success with LA, but let's not forget that the Rams defense is probably the best in the NFL right now. They have talent and speed everywhere, and playing CB is far easier when your front 7 can dominate.

Either way, good for him, but nobody thought we were crazy for dumping him after the start he had.

Forbes was not good here .. true. But doesnt it make you wander how a 1st rd pick can barely get on the field here.... gets cut after 2y and goes on to another team and doesn't just excel .. but is actually doing a pretty good job covering the opponents #1 WR. It not like he grew a couple of inches or gained weight.
Thats a hell of a turn around.. good for him, but does make we wonder about the coaching and player development here. Same as Martin and Sainristil were good last year and are plain bad this year.. how does that happen? it HAS to be coaching

Yeah coaching definitely had something to do with it. We all know Ron and JDR were fossils with their game planning and strategies...if we call them that.

It has also been evident that along with this years injuries, our belief that Whitt is poor has shown through and has been removed from play calling. He really should have been removed in thee off-season.

It may not matter much but he actually did gain weight. He was drafted at 166 and didn't gain much while here. He is now listed with the Rams at 173, so 7 pounds packed onto thee stick figure. He also of course should have never been drafted at 16 as there were a minimum of 2 better CBs than him Riverboat passed over for Forbes

For all the consternation about Quinn not taking play calling from Whitt sooner, Kevin Patullo is still calling plays in Philadelphia

Very different situations - Quinn let them struggle for 1.5 years. They struggled on D last year too.
The Eagles O playcaller is Patullo, and he only had the job this year - and they are 8-4 and lead the NFCE. So, if there is any comparison to be made at all, I think you'd look at last year and say this is similar timing to 12 games into last season, maybe- but even there, I think our record was worse at that time. So Quinn was still riding with a guy who was leading a worse defense.

Of course, apples and oranges in many cases: new team D, a lot of holdovers from past regime, less time with them... but still, Patullo has had a lot less time in that role than Quinn gave Whitt.

Patullo is Sirianni’s longtime buddy from their days with the Colts and he will probably be fired despite that. The Eagles have a standard and will move quickly to take care of a problem. Unlike ownership here which wants to be perceived as being patient, Lurie, Roseman and co dgaf

I know many of you are not fans of Von Miller and wouldn’t want him here next year.

What I am curious about is whether his experience and mastery of the EDGE position has helped his positionmates to get better. Armstrong was in the midst of a career year and Martin is having a career year now. Furthermore, the International Pathway Program guy got elevated from the PS and may make his debut against the Broncos.

Von founded and ran The Sack Summit for a number of years.

This would be a nice assignment for one of these reporters to work on

Great post. I have always been a fan of Miller. I just think he's aged out only a shadow of what he was.

Your point on Martin and Armstrongs successful seasons in an otherwise dreary defensive season is spot on. He and Wagner are going to be good coaches. It will be interesting to see if can hang on to one of them for our coaching staff next season.

Also a nice point about TJ moving to the active roster. I hadn't read this. Plus we are hoping Drake Jackson can get play time before the season ends. They each have been able to be around these two future HOFs and should have received a great deal of knowledge from the experience.

I was cool with the Von Miller signing, such a shame it didn't work out but I like the idea and will continue to support these 1 year deals. Just keep them at one year, that was their mistake this season.

One year deals are vital to filling the back end of the roster. Every team needs them.

Agreed, we must move to get the number of them reduced. We need more good players on rookies deals

I remember the D Line improving when Kerrigan was hired as an assistant line coach. Maybe that's the next step for Von Miller?

Darryl Tapp is also a really respected d-line coach.

Don’t mind Miller for another year at all. I think he’s still got some to offer especially if we can concentrate his efforts on obvious passing downs against tired OL towards the end of the game. Also great point about what he brings to the room. Baptiste was also showing improvement before his injury. I was a little surprised to see TJ elevated. I thought it would take him until at least next year before it would be possible for him. I hope he gets the chance to play some. Picking up an edge from the IPP program would be a huge bonus.

I don’t think Von is going into coaching. He has a podcast. I can see him going into the media route.

Similarly, I am curious about what Bobby does. One of the reasons he came here was to get his MBA from Howard. Guessing he goes into business.

I would certainly be open to bringing Von back next year as the pass rush specialist. He is top 40 in the league in sacks off a limited snap count.

I’m really curious about how Jackson looks. He is now 2 years out from the Chase Young level knee surgery.

For me, I want to see some burst and pass rushing ability but I want to see an ability to set an edge first and foremost. He is 275. I imagine he’d be good at this

He was one of the bigger young players the coaches really needed to see this season. He was one good swing AP took late in the season at an insured layer he had familiarity with

I think if you’re the Eagles, as you keep having to move on from Sirianni’s hand-picked coordinators, you eventually have to confront the fact that either Siriannini isn’t the guy or Hurts is a coach killer. It has to be one or the other with all that talent.
